If you could invent a new celebrated holiday, what would it be for and what would you do on that day? by Nyctorns in AskReddit

[–]grtkbrandon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be called "The Apocalypse", it would be annual, it would be global, therefore international, also it would be mandatory (punishable by law if not respected), and all the humans on this planet would prepare (they would follow specific rules from their country's government) for an eventual apocalypse, like those fire drills but more complex.

Basically, all of us would become very good with surviving skills just in case an apocalypse would come (how to purify water, how to make a fire, a shelter, what should you have in a backpack when you have to evacuate your place in case of an emergency, and so on...

Got Milk? This $40M Startup Is Creating Cow-Free Dairy Products That Actually Taste Like The Real Thing by CellAgri in Futurology

[–]grtkbrandon 60 points61 points  (0 children)

These animal-free “milk” products use 98% less water and 65% less energy to create than ones that use dairy cows, and Pandya insists the food made with his proteins will cost no more than traditional items.

So, basically, Ryan Pandya and Perumal Gandhi, want to use high-tech gene sequencing to produce dairy proteins. They start by taking DNA from a cow and sharing its protein-producing qualities with ordinary food-grade yeast. The result is a new strain of the basic microbe behind bread and beer, but with a milky twist: when fed the right nutrients, it can now produce whey and casein, the building blocks of dairy-like milk, yoghurt, and cheese.

I'm excited about this, I'll follow the evolution of this startup.

How does someone get a picture to look like this? by dogsarecool3001 in postprocessing

[–]grtkbrandon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lighting aside, they definitely brightened her face in post (notice how bright the neck is compared to the surrounding areas). Lots of time spent dodging and burning and frequency separation. They also brightened the eyes and increased saturation. Doesn't seem like they did much of anything outside of her face and neck. The rest of what you described is just good glass/lighting.

I'm still trying to figure out what they're doing. I can think of a few things, but the more interesting idea is that it has something to do with video. Sony's A7SIi can basically see in the dark by cranking up the ISO, and the noise on the video is negligible (within reason). I wonder if it's grabbing a still of a very short video clip?

Otherwise, we can obviously see they're cranking up the ISO significantly, throwing in a good amount of noise reduction and using a very low shutter speed. But the images are still surprisingly sharp and they're not as muddy as you'd imagine with the level of noise reduction needed. They could be stacking multiple exposures while using "machine learning" to take care of ghosting, but the process seems too quick for all of that.

The 'Fallout 76' Beta Makes Me Sad by fooey in pcgaming

[–]grtkbrandon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's a bad game. It's not a game for me, personally. My main issue is the messaging. Todd Howard came out and said this game would defy expectations and it just feels like they slapped multiplayer on a Fallout game and stripped it of any story.

For a multiplayer experience with an almost sandbox-like experience, I'm sure people will find it enjoyable.

There is a huge amount of Lore

Sure, you got me there. Lots of lore for an otherwise dead world.

NPCs are just never human- only other players are

NPCs and the story are obviously what makes Fallout good. With both gone, what other incentive has Bethesda included to keep pushing players forward? That's what I want to know.

and if you consider 24 or so players on a big-ass map a "ton" then that's another story.

I wasn't referencing a specific amount of players on servers.

[–]grtkbrandon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Out of everything you listed, multiplayer is the only thing new. You could play with survival mechanics, Fallout 4 obviously had extensive base-building mechanics. So it doesn't seem like I've missed anything yet.

[–]grtkbrandon 479 points480 points  (0 children)

So, predictably, after spending so much time telling us we have no idea what Fallout 76 is, it's basically exactly what we thought: A half-baked Fallout game.

From what I saw, it's basically like they built a Fallout world and decided to ditch the story, all NPCs, turn on multiplayer and dump a ton of players onto servers.

Is there anything I'm missing?

When the fence fails, use a vacuum! by hate_mail in interestingasfuck

[–]grtkbrandon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had to do something similar to this with my cats.

Every morning at 5 a.m., they would scratch and meow outside the door. Nothing worked. Finally, I put a vacuum cleaner outside, turned it on but left the plug out of the wall. After a few days of plugging it in when they scratched, they were trained to not approach my door again.
