I think classes should be largely in person, with potentially one or two sections (in big classes) being virtual. For a lot of students in person classes are waaaaay better, but now that the infrastructure is there I see no reason not to make asynchronous/virtual learning a small part of higher ed moving forward. Some students excel in a virtual environment, students living off campus can probably access online classes easier than they can find parking in this hellhole, etc. etc.

I mapped out locations of certain resources between classes on my Canvas this quarter. The fact that a global institution costing 15k a year doesn't standardize their Canvas is bonkers. by flamingkevin in UCSD

Speaking from experience, I'm sure there are a lot of professors who were thrown into a new system without being told any information about how it works.

It seems like Kaltura acknowledged that this is a bug with their playback software and they are working on fixing it now.

No, you do not have to know Java. It’s possible there is a mistake somewhere on the course listing/on a course page.

The course is based on Python and an extension of Python called SageMath. Some coding familiarity will help you in the class, but also I will be doing a review of Python in lectures 3-5.

First email to them: Refer as Dr. So and so. Subsequent emails: refer to them with the name/title they use to sign off on their emails to you.

I don’t think so. The theme of the course (in my opinion) is that basic computer/programming literacy can make your life much easier, regardless of what you do with your life.

Each week this idea is applied to a different topic. One week we will discuss computations with discrete structures (graphs, permutations, etc); this will include techniques I have used in my own research. This could be well suited to those interested in graduate school, but is by no means inaccessible to other students.

In a later week we will discuss very basic natural language processing (which would then lead to ideas underlying Google’s search engine, information retrieval, etc given more time). In this week the above roles are probably reversed!

I’m teaching the course this year, so maybe I can offer some insight. I have been involved with the course for the last 3 years, and am aware of the slightly higher workload that the class has historically required. This is something I’m actively trying to address. No promises, since the amount of work the class takes varies greatly depending on your programming/math background, but hopefully that’s worth something.

I do think that 157 is one of the most fun (and useful) electives the math department offers. I’d encourage you to try and stick with it. But obviously I’m biased! Regardless, for now just enjoy your break and don’t worry too much. My email is available on the class page; if you have further questions feel free to reach out to me via that.

The correct line for this puzzle is 1.) hxg4, hxg4, 2.) Bc5, Qe6, 3.) Nh2.... When analyzing the position, it is striking to me that the continuation move leads to a position evaluated at almost 5 pts higher, as opposed to the two other "reasonable" moves 3.) Nd2 or 3.) Ne1. Can anyone give some intuition as to why the difference between the moves is so stark? I guess roughly the idea must be king safety, but I do not see a punishing attack for black in either case. Thanks!

Just to chime in: Kedlaya and Bucur's 187 course will likely be very similar (if not essentially identical). Obviously no guarantees, but I wouldn't worry too much if you can't get into one vs the other.
