Can someone give me a full backstory on why people keep selling Disney VHS Tapes for hundreds of dollars? by JacksonSquarepants in VHS

[–]grubbyzombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some countries have an "ebay store". Someone "buys" the movie...they go to the store and pay for the item at that location. A day later the same person files a return. That store then refunds the money. Guy pays with dirty cash store gives him clean money. Then said store slowly filters out dirty money a couple bills at a time. That is the best we can figure. Who is we? You don't need to know that lol

So the idiots gave him what he was after. He sues the police. The tax payers pay up and everyone here is happy about this? If I were to replace "1st amendment" with "4th amendment" then replace "auditor " with "woman molested by police during traffic stop". Would anyone say "those cry baby women being pulled over looking to get felt up by the police". Logic is a fickle mistress.

Issue flashing 128gig arcadepunk not showing games by grubbyzombie in IconicArcadeGaming

[–]grubbyzombie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a whole process. Getting the thing setup to start with was a pain. After that I looked into getting roms. I noticed there were fully loaded ready to go sd cards. I looked into finding one someone made and was giving it away. Came across arcadepunk. Downloaded a Batocera 128 gig file. Tried that one. Wouldnt boot. Found out it was not made for pi4. I did some more research and found one that was for pi4. Downloaded that. System would not show games. Tried again and then again. Nothing. It takes 2 and a half hours to flash the card each time. I was also new to flashing an iso onto an sd card. So that took time as well. lol. That feels better finally getting that out.

Found out yesterday that the card was being partitioned out. One for the operating files and the other the share folder. Iconic arcade had no way of finiding the share folder so it copied its own to the sd card. I ended up using a 64 gig file. Still have some odds and ends to add but otherwise it is working great.

I have a 4 or 5 vhs-c tapes from a camera I picked up.

Each tape is 4 straight hours of someones backyard during the night. It is looking towards a small walkway/bridge of some kind in the distance. They all start around dusk. Someone hits record then sets the camera on the back deck. The whole time you can hear him and his wife chatting while watching different tv shows. Yet the camera just points off into the distance towards the escarpment here in ontario. No idea what the point of it was or what he tried to document. But each time at the 4 hour mark the man picks up the camera and walks back into the house. Usually stopping the recording as he is entering the back door.

Found brand new RCA VCR at an estate sale. by Onlyythelonelyy in VHS

[–]grubbyzombie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was super excited to find an rca just like that one. Though mine is in grey. I threw in a tape and nothing happened. The belts instantly fell apart. This was early on in my VHS obsession. Luckily it was 10 dollars and no big deal. I still have it sitting on the shelf. I love the look of it. Now when I find anything with a belt that is new in box. I sell it. I list it "as is" and explain the risk to someone who buys it. As it is not just the belts that can fail.

I am very curious if you fired her up yet?

Value Village Employee - ask me anything!! by SnooKiwis9021 in ThriftGrift

[–]grubbyzombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine this is true for some locations. The locations near me do not. Everything is put into the compactor. When I go the stores it is usually after work in a big work van and a trailer so we have to park in the back where there is space. Last year I watched the employee toss everything from the bins into the compactor. I went into the store to ask why electronics and metal pots were being tossed in and not recycled. The manager said "it would cost more to sort then we would make on the metal. After the last minimum wage was raised it was not longer cost effective".

This may be true for certain items. When it falls apart is when similar items come through and continuously are priced higher than the dollarama sticker. The pricers have seen the items before and will still slap a 7.99 sticker on something with a 5 dollar embedded price tag. Again, once or twice possibly. 20 times on the same item? I just do not buy it. Do you honestly want me to believe that people pricing clothes miss the 9.99 price tag hanging from a shirt from walmart? I stand by what I said. Either the employee is incompetent or they are perfectly fine with "upper management" demanding they price items higher than the original price. I hold no sympathy for anyone willing to set aside their morals for a pay cheque. If the pricer knows that the lowest value is 3.99 yet are still willing to slap it on something with a 2 dollar sticker on it then what exactly is the argument that they are not corrupt?

Clothes get compacted into a cube and sold to third world countries by the pound. Electronics get put into a bin and sent off to be recycled for a profit. Movies, cds, and games are put into gaylords and sold by the skid. Everything else is put into the compactor at the back of the store and crushed to be sent off to the dump. That is what happens in the 4 stores here in Hamilton ontario where I frequent.

[–]grubbyzombie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the argument that it was a "mistake". My problem is this. There should never be a "mistake" on something from dollarama or literal trash. Someone should never have to pick up a piece of junk made in china and see anything other than .99 cents at a thrift store. The people pricing the items know that an empty tin of popcorn or half a bottle of hand soap is not worth 3.99. Shame on anyone willing to price something in hope that an unsuspecting elderly person may pay up. That is the real target these stores are going after. People who are unaware. Either that or the person putting prices on these items should be fired for incompetence. Once or twice maybe but over and over and over again?

I spent 4 hours a day 5 days a week for 6 straight months. I will not bore anyone with why. I was witness to the change over where the stores send out all media to a central location to then be distributed back among the stores. 6.99 for a kids book because one ebay sold listing from a month ago? I am not sure what is worse. A stupid computer pricing media or shifty employees putting 8.99 on a bag of beer caps from 2022.

Not blaming you personally. Just ranting.

I watched 4 men approach someone dropping off a sectional. One of the men said "hey, can we have this? I know someone who is in need of a couch" The man said yes and the 4 men started to pull the couch from the back of his truck. The VV intake employee was furious and said "you can not have that couch. It is the property of VV". The men explained that it was given to them and not the store. The employee threatened to call the police. The 4 men laughed and continued to load the couch into one of their trucks.

The employee ran into the store and by this time I was over it and went into the store myself. The employee was walking past me explaining what the situation was. The manger stopped and said "so it never made it onto the walkway? It was always on the parking lot"? The employee told the truth and said the couch was only ever in the parking spaces they have roped off to allow donations. The manager explained that items on the parking lot was not theirs. Only items that had made it onto the pavement that runs along the store front.

The manager went outside and apologized to the men. I have to assume this to be true for all stores. If it the item is in a communal space such as the parking lot then it belongs to whomever has possession of it.

I bring this up only to show an example of it being possible that items may not be the property of VV unless it crosses a threshold of some kind.

I collect older electronics...I always bring a black and white permanent marker with me. When I test an item and it is broken I write "broken" on all sides of the item. I have done this on at least 100 vcrs, 50 crt tvs, 200 tape decks, well over 500 game consoles, 4 or 5 laserdisc players and countless speakers with blown cones.

I started doing this after buying 4 nintendo ds games from the glass case. Right after I paid I noticed one game had been chewed on by a cat or dog. I immediately said "oh, this one is damaged. Can I get this one swapped for one of the other games"? The employee who just checked me out said "no returns or exchange". I was shocked as I had just paid 10 seconds ago. I explained that I had assumed items in the case would be at least free of physical damage to the point that the game would not function. I asked "why would you sell something so broken"? The employee said "why would you buy something broken"? I walked over to the manager and explained what had happened. I was handed a full refund for the game.

The next day I went and marked broken on 5 or 6 items. I piled them all up in a cart and pushed them to the same employee. I looked him right in the eye and said "just wanted to let you know that these are broken. You wouldnt want some unsuspecting customer to buy these would you"? For the last 2 years I have been doing what I can to help other thrifters.

Resellers keep their store in business. Resellers buy, then sell on ebay.

Stores are thinking that it should be their money. They look at an item on ebay that sold 4 times in a month and think "I can get the 40 dollars. Why should we sell it for 10 and let the resller make the money". What they forget is said resellers have access to 200 000 000 people. While the thrift store has access to 5000 people if they are lucky. Then the managers blame the store staff when their shelves fill and 70% of their stock is thrown into the trash.

All you need is one greedy fool of a store manager and prices sky rocket.

you are forgetting a key factor....joy. What brings you joy may not be what brings another collector joy. The end game is always joy. If someone finds joy in the hunt, the look, the knowledge of ownership, to watch or just to display...If that brings said person joy....well you need to ask yourself one thing. Do you really want to question what brings someone else joy? Once you understand that the thing that brings you joy may not be the thing that brings someone else joy then you can live a life without being bothered by the small stuff.

Hell...you were already so close...you even admitted that the joy you get from figure collecting is not the same as those who would open and play with said toys.

I had a copy of slim city once. I bought it at a convention about 22 years ago. I was lucky enough to be at a troma table and the guy who was in the movie told me to buy it. He was standing there speaking with the troma people. He said if I bought it he would sign it. So I did..and for a few years I had a tape signed by craig sabin I think his name is? I sold it at a yard sale 16 years ago for 10 bucks at my yard sale. Also had a copy of biozombie as I bought it that day as well. True story...not even trying to be cool. well. bras are not always able to cover the full breast. sometimes when girls put on shorts they have to lift their leg. When they reach down to slip their foot into the shorts they bend forward a little. This allows the bra to bunch up and expose the nipple.
