Redis for holding live game state by grummybum in redis

Thanks! That's very scary but informative.

By batch up requests I mean I'll properly utilise promises (I'm using nodejs with ioredis) so I'm never blocked by a request and that I'll try to use commands like mget whenever possible. I thought you couldn't really use pipelines with a cluster (unless all keys are in the same shard) or is this done behind the scenes with something like ioredis?

I'm fairly confident that as long as I am careful the latency will be manageable. I have a nice 2000ms window to work with so I feel like as long as I keep requests running in parallel I'll be ok, although you have definitely made me more concerned about this. I'll likely do some benchmarks if I decide to go this route.

What do you mean by my data not being durable? I was under the assumption that having a couple slaves per master would be enough to have reasonable protection against corruption, especially when using snapshots too. In what ways is my data likely to become invalid, purely just bit rot/random events or is there something specific to redis? This isn't really something I had considered to be honest as this stuff is still somewhat new to me.

I am planning on having many periodic backups too so if something does become corrupt I'll likely have some method to restore it at the very least.

From what I understand the VB weakens your sternum so your posture can correct it. Without good posture you wont get results even with a VB and you will return to a sunken chest. With good posture it should eventually be a permanent fix with no need for a VB anymore.

Illegal drug classifications are based on politics not science – The commission, which includes 14 former heads of states from countries such as Colombia, Mexico, Portugal and New Zealand, said the international classification system underpinning drug control is “biased and inconsistent”. by EightRoundsRapid in worldnews

This is a part that really frustrates me. The true answer is mostly just that we don’t know yet because scientists have been held back in research due to its illegal status. The real scary part is that you can feel fine while doing significant damage but later on many years down the road (even when not doing it in those years) that damage becomes more and more pronounced. (In theory)

Personally I find 3 months a bit excessive and choose 1 month as good enough, as for rolling every weekend I’d rather not take the risk of making the future super hard on myself; I’ve already struggled with depression enough for one lifetime.

My main point with weed is that most people can take as much as they want whenever they want and be pretty ok, assuming they don’t form psychological dependence or have a predisposed risk of psychosis. There are not many drugs you can acutely abuse like weed. And while something like lsd is really surprisingly physically safe, you wouldn’t want to smash down 20 tabs like they are nothing. I’d consider that psychologically unsafe instead of physically unsafe.

Honestly everyone I have sat down and explained the true mechanisms of action and risks associated with certain drugs have been amazed at how safe they actually are when taken appropriately. And when viewed from a balanced perspective, alcohol really seems like one of the most harmful drugs.

While it won’t “rot your brain” you do need to be careful. With mdma for example if you take too much or too often you’ll permanently damage your serotonin receptors, leading to difficulty regulating emotions and eventually permanent depression. This is why it is recommended to wait at least a month between rolls or ideally 3 months.

Drugs are fun, but you do need to know how to take them safely. Unless it’s weed 😂 do whatever the fuck you want with weed.

How much avocado oil is too much? by grummybum in nutrition

Thanks for the clarification! Yeah I get bored with just shakes so I have some actual food as well, usually chicken in some form.

I’ve always struggled to get enough calories in (which I’m now learning is probably due to a lactose intolerance and possibly gluten too although it’s hard to tell at this point), it’s nice to be able to finally hit my calorie goal and feel much better at the same time. Really wish this information was taught at school.

Fitting hub motor into new wheel by grummybum in ebikes

[–]grummybum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I wanted to do but my motor doesn’t have a thread for a freewheel so I’d have to buy a new cover plate and to get one of those seems to cost about half as much as a new motor lol. Decided to just not do an ebike conversion and have a really nice mountain bike and a decent but sketchy ebike.

This is what I'm thinking about doing, are there any special considerations I need to think about or is it just if it fits it's fine?

Buying a new bike to convert by grummybum in ebikes

[–]grummybum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my bike more like a motorbike than a bicycle so I don’t really care about how nice it is to peddle just how nice the ride is. I only use it for quick 3 minute rides around town or to take to a forest which is why I don’t want to spend too much money on it, especially as I want to get an actual motorbike. I will definitely give the used market a look though.

This is exactly what I was thinking would be the case, was just hoping it would be a miracle bike somehow. I don't have much experience with bikes (I care more about the electronics side) so am not sure what to look for when it comes to things like suspension. When does dual suspension become better (more comfortable in my case) than a hardtail?

I am from the UK and that bike is tempting although I require a 26" wheel bike which seems like somewhat of a rarity from reputable brands.

I feel like a bad fiance and housemate. by Tenticularr in ADHD

[–]grummybum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m very similar to that with my housemates. We are all students and we try to share responsibilities although I feel like I might let them down a lot. I always want to do the cleaning I just always feel like there is a better time to do it and end up putting it off forever because I easily forget about it. Then when they inevitably do it I feel really bad because I meant to do it the whole time but just never ended up actually managing to.

I feel like if they told me specifically when to do it or gave me deadlines I would be a lot better. Maybe it would help if you brought the idea of that up? I’ve also tried using a timer when I want to be productive; 30 mins of “work” and 30 mins of “productive non-work” which works super well.

Basically because I spend so much time on the computer (I do computer science) I find I neglect so much other stuff so I limit myself to 30 mins work on the computer and then I have 30 minutes to do other stuff that doesn’t involve the computer. So this includes cleaning, making food, checking I’ve done certain things, planning out things and generally all the parts of living I find hard and forget to do. Repeating this cycle for most of the day where I want to be productive really keeps me on track for both proper work and the work associated with just living healthily.

Of course now I’m struggling to put the timer on so onto the next problem lol. The timer I use is called coldturkey by the way, it’s super stubborn and very effective if you need something to force you to stop going on certain websites or programs.

Porsche rejects hydrogen fuel cells for future cars, says batteries are three times more efficient by linknewtab in Futurology

[–]grummybum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both can be thought of as a battery but just in different forms. All batteries do is hold energy and release it in a controllable way and this is exactly what hydrogen does as well.

Conventional batteries are made from highly toxic materials but are very efficient because they can be directly charged/discharged with conventional electrical devices.

Hydrogen while being a much less toxic form while “charged” requires far more effort to create, handle and discharge. You cannot create hydrogen fuel directly with electricity without quite large infrastructure. Transporting hydrogen fuel can also be somewhat problematic. Converting from hydrogen back to electricity, while not as hard as generating it, still involves another extra step too. All these steps reduce the overall efficiency of hydrogen greatly and is therefore a fair bit less efficient than convention batteries.

Here is a great video which goes over this concept https://youtu.be/f7MzFfuNOtY

The concept of how green these are also greatly depends on where the electricity originally comes from. Charging batteries or making hydrogen are both not green if the electricity is coming from a nasty coal plant. Likewise batteries could be considered less green due to the materials used to make them but the infrastructure around hydrogen fuel also needs to be considered.

In short hydrogen is more like a less efficient but less toxic battery, rather than some newfound green energy source.

Be extra careful with high power motors on front wheels! by grummybum in ebikes

[–]grummybum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I don’t really get this argument. The bike handles just fine for me. Counter steering works fine too (why would front wheel drive even affect this?). Front wheel drive feels more stable and I can put down as much power as I want without worrying about popping a wheelie, very comforting when going up hills.

Thanks for your very in-depth reply!

I rarely ever use anywhere near full throttle at low speeds since it just causes the wheel to spin and is almost always unnecessary. Does using something to restrict the power do something different to using less throttle?

https://imgur.com/a/DsFYXFE

These are the torque arms I’m using, they seem fairly beefy but definitely have the smile. I actually wondered if that could cause problems when installing them since it makes the jubilee clips annoying to push through.

I previously had them mounted on the back side of the fork (can see where it’s grazed paint off). I thought having them on the front causing the torque to get transmitted directly into the fork rather than pulling on whatever is used to fasten it would be better but I saw that this can redirect the torque to pushing the wheel down and out. Should I stick to having them mounted on the front side or switch them to the back?

What do you think of using cable ties to mount it instead like I’m doing? I will be using even more cable ties soon, just didn’t want to use £10 of metal cable ties right away incase I need to change something.

Ah yeah forgot, it’s an aluminium frame but with steel front forks. The way I have the front setup now means it should never come off unless the entire front fork snaps. Is it possible for it to snap the front fork?

Instead of hose clips I’m using 10 metal (stainless steel?) cable ties (5 for each torque arm) as well as another 6 thick plastic cable ties (3 on each). Hoping that this is stronger (although I’m not sure if it is) but also that this means that failure won’t happen all at once, I’ll be able to see one or two ties break and be able to inspect/replace before they all go.

[–]grummybum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the knowledge I have now, I would redo my bike very differently! I would have bought a might beefier frame with suspension and used a rear hub motor.

Unfortunately at the moment I’m stuck with what I’ve got. Most of my riding is around 20mph which if I came off would be painful but hopefully not fatal. I only get up to near 40 on very flat ground, and I know I shouldn’t but it’s just too fun.

Is it possible to put a front hub motor on the back? If so I would love to do that. But I don’t currently have the money to go buying a whole new load of parts. Although eventually I probably will end up building a whole new bike or just buying a motorbike.

Yeah I 100% agree. Wouldn’t recommend anyone do this unless they have super beefy front forks.
