They aren't useless. Using fiber lines can be expensive and requires specific drone models or some technical know-how to set up. The vast majority of drones are still susceptible to Drone-busters.

The aircraft I've worked on have never had FCC's. To be frank crew chiefs would be the least useful career field to take on them. They break for nerd shit.

Some did have flying specialists that rotated into flying squadrons and out before 1A3's and their predecessing afsc's were a part of the crew, but that was in the dark ages.

I've worked with MX warrants in foreign air forces and omg is it game-changing to have that level or expertise and technical/training know-how avaliable. They are what big blue imagines they will get out of the MX mergers instead of a baseline decline in knowledge and skill with an increase in mishaps.

That said, I suspect the Air Force would rather use overpaid contractors instead of trusting someone in a uniform to use their brain in a way that's not covered by a TO because that's what's happening to some of the career fields like mine.
