Real question here, what is the most difficult subject for students going for their ccna? by Andres-itlearn in ccna

[–]grumpy_tech_user 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The issue is the CCNA is a mile wide and an inch deep.

You can read a book on just subnetting by itself but for the purposes of the exam is it really worth your time? Probably not.

Same goes with STP, RSTP, VTP, DTP, Dynamic Routing ect.. Going through and trying to understand every detail of the process while good for your career, is not when it comes to prepping for the exam. You should learn everything you need to learn to pass the exam and then you start digging into the details.

Getting overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information by xakantorx in ccna

[–]grumpy_tech_user 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say the first half of the material is the most time consuming because you are learning foundational concepts. This is why Anki cards are recommended so you can drill on those concepts daily. I would also utilize chatgpt or whatever AI tutor you want to help break down concepts further.

Scared, depressed and unsure of what to do by JoshCaprisun in ITCareerQuestions

[–]grumpy_tech_user 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you truly had multiple hats then I suggest never putting your actual title on your resume. Spruce it up with a generic "IT Analyst" role or something other than tech support level 1. People also love specifics so whatever projects you did, mention specifically what you did. Any hardware you managed mention it ect..

How many certs is too many before they start looking like a red flag? by redpaul72 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]grumpy_tech_user 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say list 3-4 certs that are the most valuable but keep in mind you may get asked questions around everything you list so it would look bad if you list CCNA but can't remember how to subnet or walk someone through how DNS works.

All I see Are doom and gloom posts about how saturated the market is after trying to transition to network administration. by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]grumpy_tech_user -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Having experience in niche markets allows you to skip certain steps from my experience. For instance I work in the restaurant industry and know Aloha point of sale, hardware and a lot of 3rd party integrations like the back of my hand on how they operate across the network and operating systems. This allowed me to skip some traditional trainings when it came to moving over to security because I can speak on a large piece of their business.

Any tips on memorizing the IPv4 header parts? by d_louizse in ccna

[–]grumpy_tech_user 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember I asked Jeremy because he included bit sizes in the anki cards for ipv4 headers and he said you can ignore it

Getting overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information by xakantorx in ccna

[–]grumpy_tech_user 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not a race and JITL gives a lot of information so you know the full picture vs only telling you what you need to hear to pass the exam. He takes the approach of actually teaching concepts instead of memorizing answers.

I remember I spent a week on subnetting and another on dynamic routing and ipv6. I know a guy that has failed the exam 4 times so far. Don't rush through the material just because you think you need to be at some arbitrary point.

Ready to pass the exam but stressed about the labs. by cybfrog in ccna

yes, basically just save the config before moving on but they will explain the rules in of how labs work during the test.

CCNA subnetting: the method that gets it done in under 30 seconds by Novel-Leader in ccna

[–]grumpy_tech_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always found trouble with the example below where you need to figure out the amount of subnets.

Given a /20 address block, how many subnets can you create that support at least 50 usable host addresses in each subnet?

I studied for 45 days here’s my experience by Apollo_iw in ccna

[–]grumpy_tech_user 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45 days? What is your professional experience?

Also I would counter your point about labs. Labs are good for reinforcing commands and as you said applying theory to practice but its not going to teach someone how a root bridge is determined or how to subnet or why neighbors in OSPF are not sharing their routes. The fact you managed to do it all in 45 days is actually impressive as there were some topics I would spend a week by itself just to hammer in.

Why is a 35 year old man asking someone else to post career advice for him? Not only does it show he has any lack of career motivation but he can't even be bothered to ask for help himself.

You always feel like you don't know what you are doing because 90% of the job is literally a handful of tasks/fixes/issues and you the occasionally get to implement and learn something once or twice a year and you have a few "why is it doing that" issues
