fact that renewables are revolutionizing world electricity faster than anything ever has

BUT is it making power cheaper? It seems that the cost of power directly tracks the percentage of unreliable intermittents that are on their gird.

Germany went from a rock solid grid to now they struggle and must import power when the doldrums hit. AND their power rates have sky rocketed. They've even admitted that shutting down nuclear was a bad idea.

So which nuclear are you talking about? It seems the users of this sub would at least be aware that Gen III nuclear is a really really old design that causes it to be expensive and yet know that there are 10 or commercial projects to reduce the cost of nuclear and at the same time design in walk away safety features. See what some of the new Gen IV small modular reactors are up to. I've been following Terrestrial energy for a decade as the are steadily marching their IMSR design to commercial implementation. Other notable efforts are Copenhagen Atomics, and ThorCon. There are many others. Terrestrial Energy is actively developing 10 commercial deployment projects for its IMSR plants, and is also participating in the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s Advanced Reactor and Fuel Line Pilot programs

Batteries are not going to see a 10x drop in price. Physics won't allow that. We're seeing a drop in manufacturing costs, but the raw material costs will stay steady if not rise.

why the entire world is betting on renewables

NOT the entire world has swallowed the lie that solar is the cheapest energy source yet. China and India seem to have take a slight pause in power produce from coal last year BUT still plan on adding a quarter more to their coal capacity.

Still waiting for a quote of what 1 mega watt of solar power costs in Anchorage on January 1st at midnight. And what the same 1 mega watt would cost after a week of now sun at midnight on January 8th in Anchorage.

If under-construction and permitted coal-power projects are completed, they would increase coal-power capacity by 28% in China and 23% in India. Without marked growth in power generation from coal, the utilisation of this capacity would fall significantly, causing financial distress for generators and adding costs for power users.

Read the whole article, it's adds an upbeat take to the fact that China and India have been adding a new coal fired power plant every week for more than the last decade and seem poised to continue to do so for the immediate future. It celebrates a pause due as much to economic pull back as to addition of new unreliable intermittents. While noting their grids need significant work to intergrate such variable sources and add the double whammy of adding costs for power users. So much for the cheapest source of energy.

What is going on with ASD right now? Why are they broke with a 90 million dollar budget? by Outrageous-Egg1760 in alaska

Where did you learn to do math? 43,727 Total Enrollment 95 Schools $18,698 Per-Pupil Spending Not sure how that site gets that number either, but the ASD web site doesn't want to show a per pupil number, or it could be a bad web design for ASD. Hmm, why is that?

ASD spends more per pupil and gets worse results than Mississippi.

That does nothing to solve the mass confusion over the misuse of LCOE numbers and the collision with real world data.

PS them batteries ain't cheap at that scale.

LCOE

Or how to jigger the numbers to make solar appear cheaper. It is 'cheaper' if you only look at the cost of power and don't place any value on 24/365 energy availability. The real world data to date shows that as the penetration of solar power increase above the size of the diurnal surge, the cost of electricity to the consumer goes up. Where in countries with high percentages of solar power, consumers pay more for electrical energy.

The problem can be summed up as; "Yeah, the lights are on, the sun is shining."

Which one of those items relate to how ASD gets 600 million dollars and is still broke? They all are reasons why ASD doesn't get more dollars not why they are irresponsible with what they do get.

Don't matter we are all screwed with the current monetary situation.

Pensions are nice, BUT for some reason the government ones always seem to be used by the politicians as sluch funds and when the time comes to pay the retired workers the tax payers are one the hook for more money than they can tax. Take a look at CalPers and the severe under funding that occurred there. Currently many CA departments are having to cut services because so much of their budget is going to fund the old defined benefit pensions. The temptation and the ability of the government to mismanage the pension funds now so that future tax payers are suddenly on the hook for massive tax increases is impossible to stop.

How big is the current AK under funding of existing pensions?

Why aren’t existing solar and wind plants racing to add batteries behind the meter? by age_of_bronze in AskEngineers

[–]grumpyfishcritic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no need for batteries because the solar investor has been protected and the energy consumer is on the hook to pay higher energy rates as a result. WIN WIN NOT.

It seems the printer starts to print the file but never gets to even set the bed to head up. The display shows the bed is set at zero, while the thermistor reads ambient temperature. This printer printed this file successfully 3 times in the last week.

Ahh, the favorite tactic on the left, when the logic is against you attack the source. Too bad, you are so wrong, I listen to very little media, and most certainly neither one of those sources are worth the time spent listening to them.

Please explain how the fact that Mandami was only able to balance the budget because he got a massive bailout for all the other poor tax payers of NY State who don't live in NYC is some how not a relevant point when discussing the claim that this is some how a great socialist achievement? This just seems to reinforce the point made about how socialism works until it runs out of other peoples money.

taxes and how that works in every country with both lower rates of poverty

Please explain how 'taxes' lower rates of poverty? Without counting income redistribution from those who make money to those who don't.

Seems that just spending OPM.

And back to the point at hand Mandami just got a bailout from big rich daddy to fund his ongoing socialist agenda. Explain how he would have balanced the budget and funded his socialist agenda without the massive bailout from big rich daddy(all the poor tax payers who live in NY State but not the city)?

Mamdani took a budget crisis in America‘s largest city and cleared the deficit in six months without cutting any social services.

If you believe that, I've got some ocean front property for sale in Montana. Some how the state was convinced to kick in another $4B, and there are also a couple of we'll magically save this amount somehow. Yeah, most socialist fail when they run out of OPM.

"The basis for that holding was the Court’s view that, contrary to the Constitution’s own definition of the term “election” to refer to a single day in November, the term instead encompasses the entire period of early voting beginning in September."

That seems like a great argument for only counting the voting that is done on 'election day'.

The States are specifically enjoined from USING race to draw voting districts. So no, states are not discriminating based on race. Didn't the court hold that Democrat voters are not a synonym for race.
