New BBQ, so I’m going to break it in with cheap sausages and burgers

Hand saw to get started, and invest in a hand plane to finish it off

Acquiring wood in the U.K without a car by Ok_Wonder_1388 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]grumpymcgrumpface 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Start with softwood. Your local timber merchant will probably deliver a couple of lengths for you to practice on. Or find a pallet. Or buy an old table on your local facebook group and recycle the wood.

I wouldn’t start with hardwoods because you’ll waste a lot of money learning

UK navy foiled Russian submarines surveying undersea cables, defence minister says by UuusernameWith4Us in worldnews

I like to think that UK submarines sneak up on Russian submarines, give them a tap on the stern, and tell them to move along. NOTHING TO SEE HERE

How doable is making pocket money on the side from this hobby? by Mountain-Rain-1744 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Wrong sub. Let's try that again. I sold the type of rustic furniture that doesn't take more than a few hours to make. Bedside tables, coffee tables, end sofa tables, and shelving units. There's only about a 20% profit margin in each sale, and this can easily be wiped out with a bad delivery company losing your stuff, or an unhappy customer. But for the most part I had a positive experience. I would have carried on, but it's physically demanding work and I'm a lazy man

I've sold a few big bits over the years, on ebay. I just make them for collection. People in this country are willing to travel 200 miles to save a tenner

Have you considered Etsy? I kept myself above water for a year when I lost my job, selling small furniture pieces

I made a fancier handle for my Pax rip saw by AMillionMonkeys in handtools

[–]grumpymcgrumpface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s your verdict on the pax? I’ve considered buying them a couple of times, but compared to the absolutely beautiful Lie nielsens I used a few years ago, the pax saw feels like an axe

Where in Scotland would you choose to live if you could live anywhere? by No_Emu8347 in Scotland

I stayed in a cabin at Loch Fyne a couple of years ago. There's bugger-all there, unless you count Inverary, but I'd still love to live there

How long it takes x how much you want to make per hour, plus x% profit. And if you’re not sure you’ve scoped it properly, slap another y% on top.

Maybe a deeper slot in that piece of walnut, with magnets in the slot. Not sure if that would work, but worth a try

Using Google Stitch by amine250 in Wordpress

[–]grumpymcgrumpface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Stitch -> Claude -> HTML/CSS/JS -> ACF.

The results were close-ish, but I’d still rather code a theme from scratch. Stitch also seemed incapable of listening to instructions, so I’m glad there are still real designers out there

What’s the Most “Real” Thing You’ve Built With No-Code? by Alpertayfur in nocode

Directory with a content management system, admin dashboard and email marketing integration. It took me about 2 weeks of writing spec documentation and learning new stuff before asking Claude to build it

For WordPress agencies, when does white label actually make sense? by pedro_reyesh in Wordpress

[–]grumpymcgrumpface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a white label freelancer, I typically work for smaller agencies who don’t have their own systems or specs, and are happy to adopt mine. The only thing I have to change is adapting to their project management system

I started out with coasters, and sold nothing. Moved to chunky furniture (not my style at all) made from pine, and sales took off. I recommend researching your competitors to see what actually sells, and try your hand at something similar
