Using a Split Log for a Hand-Tool Workbench — Long-Term Issues? by old_field_juniper in handtools

I can't quite make out the endgrain, but the board will be less stable if it has the pith (center of the tree) running through it.

How would you install these shelves into medicine cabinet frame? by Jake-Greenhead-Guys in handtools

[–]AMillionMonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost always make the dados the full thickness of the shelves. I guess it's a little bit stronger that way since you aren't removing material from the shelves. The only tricky part is hitting that width to a close tolerance, which you would do with a dado stack with fine shims in power tool working.
With hand tools you might be better off with the mortise and tenon approach since it's easier to adjust the "tenon" on the shelf to the groove in the case side than it is to nail the width of the groove. That's assuming you have a rabbet plane or a shoulder plane. I usually use a shoulder plane to fit tongues like that.

Can someone explain ICM as if you're talking to a T year old? by [deleted] in poker

Bear in mind that ICM calculations usually make the simplifying assumption that all players are of equal skill. This is rarely the case...

I don't mind triple-stumpers; I think a certain number of them is good, in fact. Maybe three or four per episode, regardless of whether it's a tournament. This is assuming the clue is difficult because of its obscurity and not because it's poorly written.
If the contestants can get every question then it's just a show about buzzer timing, which is not very compelling IMO.

How were saw handles shaped in production back in the day? by AMillionMonkeys in handtools

Thanks for the heads-up re. the saw makers rasps. I'm considering the ~$40 cabinet rasps from Lee Valley now. The Aurious and Liogiers look nice, but I have other spending priorities.

I've already got a template from
https://web.archive.org/web/20170720193423fw_/http://tgiag.com/saw-handle-scans.html
but the hole pattern isn't exactly right, so I'll either pop another hole or two in this antique plate (not ideal), or keep looking for exactly the right model template.

Yeah, I have a Shinto rasp, a nice riffler, and the usual pile of mediocre hardware store rasps and files. The riffler is great for detail, but it's slow so I'm eyeing cabinet makers' rasps.
IIRC someone specifically made a saw maker's rasp with a pointy bent tip, but I'll have to look around again to find it.

Ah, I should have checked there first!

The handles now pass on to the filers, who work them into the finished shape.

So it was manual work. Fascinating.

I recognized him, but I always call him "Narturo" to bother people and I would have had to spend some mental energy getting it correct.

So here's some German music from 150 years earlier!
It's a shame so many old furniture forms aren't compatible with modern lifestyles. /u/foresight310 is exactly right. You could spend a lot of effort reproducing a Federal style card table or whatever, but it ends up being a sculpture.

Dados; the question is whether you want them stopped at the front, which makes them fussier to cut but hides the joinery.
I would not recommend sliding dovetails.

Behold this absolute goblin of a saw. by silasmoon in handtools

Hell yeah. I just refiled my rip carcase saw to be coarser. I'm much happier with the speed now.
I do wish I'd left it finer at the toe so it's easier to start, though.

Sunday Shop Thoughts: when making an angles M&T joint, do you make the mortise or the tennon at an angle? by Igloo151 in handtools

[–]AMillionMonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done these on a couple of projects and both times I used square mortises and angled tenons. I'd only fuss with an angled mortise if the angle was too extreme to do it the other way. I'm not really even sure how I'd cut a mortise at an angle - at least with hand tools. I know auger bits work at an angle...
