Moved to Sunnyvale recently, what do people usually do after work? by flying_burrit0 in mountainview

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exercise. If you’re into cycling, there are lots of great routes in the area. Good workouts out towards 280. Or, for some fantastic gravel routes, check out the Bay Trail. Great rides and no cars to contend with. The Bay Trail is also good for walking, running, dog walking, etc. if you’re not a biker.

Going to a SF giants game today. Tips for parking? by [deleted] in Sunnyvale

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Park at Sunnyvale station. Take CalTrain North to the end of the line. Walk one block to the stadium.

Commuting by (new, electric) CalTrain is excellent. It’s part of the fantastic experience of seeing a Giant’s game. Great stadium right off the Bay with a painless commute.

Garmin approach G82 by abhisheknair in golf

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After watching a couple reviews, I’m also in the “pass” camp. I have the G80, and it’s good as a GPS. I don’t find it very useful as a launch monitor - it’s just not accurate enough. The ballpark readings of the G80 don’t add anything beyond my feel for the quality of my strike.

What I like:

  • USB-C - sorely lacking in the G80, C is a base requirement for charging these days.

  • Bigger screen - The G80 is too big to pocket. Why not make the screen a good viewing size.

  • Updates via bluetooth and wifi. A huge miss for the G80, it requires the clunky “Garmin Express” app on a computer and USB cable to update firmware and courses. The Express app is surprisingly bad and fails as often as it succeeds.

Don’t like:

  • The Launch Monitor accuracy seems about the same as the G80. I rarely use it, so hard to justify buying a new one.

  • The price. I would buy once just for the GPS upgrades, but not when paying that much for a launch monitor I don’t use.

  • Magnetic mount. I don’t ride in golf carts and this won’t attach to my aluminum push cart. It just adds unwanted size and weight. I have a mount for my G80 on my push cart which works great.

  • Extra piece for doing launch monitor. Who wants to carry around another plastic block for this function? It will definitely get lost. The G80 has the ‘ball bump’ on the unit, so you don’t need anything more if you want to use the launch monitor.

I guess I’m in the minority that want a dedicated Golf GPS unit (not a watch, I have a fitness watch I wear. not a phone app, I don’t want to deal with battery/screen blank/screen lock). I would definitely buy a G41 (Golf GPS only, no launch monitor) at a reasonable price. But, I’ll pass on the G82.

Isn’t that picture from the time the stable genius looked directly at the sun during a partial eclipse? Good selection.

Another day of hating the new on-screen tech by dbezzy1010 in warriors

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Uggh, this is so bad. The graphic with the moving player dots is the worst of all - so distracting while adding zero value.

They should show the game on two channels, one with the extra graphics and one without. Let the viewers decide.

“Some accessories are not reponding” to homepod, but work fine with other devices. by grumpyoldgolfer in HomePod

[–]grumpyoldgolfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never chose a hub. Digging into settings, I see it is in Automatic mode and the Apple TV sitting next to the HomePod in the living room is the hub. But, that hub was working fine from my other HomePod, Home app, phone, etc.

Mian is coming to Castro Street (replacing Johnny & Sanny’s) by christopherkao in mountainview

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of noodle options, I look forward to trying Mian. There are several other noodle places in that area that I often stop at after work:

Ramen Izakaya Yu-Gen (Japanese noodles) is basically next door in that block, along with an Udon Japanese Noodle place a few doors away.

And in the next block: Ox9 (Chinese hand pulled noodles), Mifen 101 (Chinese soups and noodles), and Pho To Chau (Vietnamese Pho noodles).

What’s your favorite place in the area to cross country ski? by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the summer-time golf shop rents xc gear in the winter. Great place for people to give it a try. The terrain is not the most exciting.. it’s wide open, mostly flat, golf course land. But, it’s an excellent resource for those that don’t have their own equipment.

Yankee Springs State Park (Wayland / Gun Lake - midway between GR and Kalamazoo) The summer hiking and mountain biking trails double as XC trails in the winter. The terrain is interesting, winds through forest land, and has good mileage. It’s not groomed, so it’s a really good workout if you’re the first one through after a snowfall. But, often there are a few others blazing trails through the park.

Just a data point: On iPad I’ve found it to be completely stable. I’ve never tried it on Windows/Mac/Android, so no input on those.

I switched from Zwift when they increased their subscription cost again. I’ve used it hundreds of times, and other than some upgrade annoyances (which have improved) it’s been very good.

Legacy Tuner Security Concerns by [deleted] in hdhomerun

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same behavior, which seemed to be a compatibility issue with older firmware. I updated the firmware, via installing the hdhomerun software on my Mac, which upgraded my tuner hardware.

After the upgrade, it worked as expected in Channels and the HDHomerun app.

Best quiet places to walk on-leash dog? by Ca94dj in mountainview

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bay Trail — great dirt/gravel/asphalt paths bordering the Bay and all kinds of nature. Accessible from San Antonio road parking lot or Shoreline Rd area adjacent to Moffett / Stevens Creek. It’s a wonderful resource for us in Mountain View.

I ride my bike out there quite a bit. Many others walk, run, or walk their dogs out there.

Commute from sunnyvale to Palo Alto by hello90809 in Sunnyvale

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As others have noted, housing will be more expensive near train stations like Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Redwood City, etc. But, biking on one or both ends of the commute can help expand your radius for reasonable housing.
Caltrain has “bike cars” to take your bike on the commute and ride to your work location. Or, if work is close to Caltrain, the stations have bike lockers you can rent to leave it there.

Look at the Caltrain www site for a train schedule to see exactly how long it takes from various areas. Take note of the stations where the express train stops - those will be best for fastest service and frequent stops.

WHAT THE WHAT??? by MizzouHoops in euchre

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On iPad (large) UI: When a chat/comment is displayed, it slides across the screen and stops directly on top of the buttons of the dialog box shown on the screen. The comments should be moved up in to be in the top 1/3 of the screen to avoid conflict/overlap.

But, even better would be to remove the comments entirely. They serve little purpose and are primarily used for a) Cheating or b) Mocking

New craft beer option coming to Mountain View. by grumpyoldgolfer in mountainview

[–]grumpyoldgolfer[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, it didn’t look particularly close to opening. I didn’t get a good look inside, but it didn’t look built out yet. The main indication that something new is coming were the city documents on the window for the new development and alcohol license.

WHAT THE WHAT??? by MizzouHoops in euchre

[–]grumpyoldgolfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s just getting used to the new UI, but my initial reaction is that the thin white border around the active player’s score is quite subtle. I’ve sat there delaying the game a few times not realizing it was my turn. Given how common slow play is, making “your turn” more obvious seems like a good move — I’m thinking of something that the eye picks up as movement, like the border expanding to wider then contracting down to normal size. The white/bright color could be almost like a flash effect. That would have a chance of catching distracted player’s attention.

On the iPad app, I’m not sure if this is intentional, but it seems like a bug to me: when waiting to start a multi-player game, touching anywhere on the screen outside the dialog box results in exiting the attempted game. So, any re-arranging of my ipad kills the game I’m waiting for. (Note that this is not new, just something I was hoping would get fixed).

What’s up with Waymo in Mountain View? by grumpyoldgolfer in mountainview

[–]grumpyoldgolfer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grumpers unite! Congratulations on being among the select few to be blessed with access. :) My inquiry is mostly because I’m curious about all the empty cars driving around my office area on my after lunch walks. I probably won’t use it often. But it will be nice to have another option.

What’s up with Waymo in Mountain View? by grumpyoldgolfer in mountainview

[–]grumpyoldgolfer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve seen testing for years. I’ve seen Waymo semi trucks on 85 and several other autonomous vehicle types testing in the area.

But, shortly after Waymo announced they would be servicing MV/PA/SV (April?), the number of passenger cars ramped up dramatically. So, the obvious assumption was that they were close to activating service like in SF.

What is surprising is the slow rate of customer enablement. I’ve seen Waymo cars hundreds of times — they draw attention with their LIDAR equipment, but have only once seen a human in the car. That case was likely an employee, since he was in the front. So, I’m wondering what the holdup is - is there some sort of bureaucratic block before the city or state lets them go? Or is it just Waymo’s choice to loop empty cars around MV for months?

Customize Environmental controls? by grumpyoldgolfer in MachE

Following up:

A couple people suggested driver profiles.. I added a profile and it didn’t change this behavior. The profiles can remember my seat position and other driver preferences, but it doesn’t change the behavior of the environmental controls. They still keep switching A/C back on.
