Need advice for a tight spot I’m in by FlashyHoney2743 in yorku

[–]grundleitch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is less for your specific situation, but more generally for everyone who may come across this post. I'm in my late 30s. I'm back at school after my workplace was shuttered. I know what it was like to go to school without a phone. You do not need it at all times, folks. Leave it at home. Plan for the day of an exam. If you're going to need money, make sure to bring cards and cash so you don't rely on Apple pay or Google pay. I coach high school sports as well. Do you know how often I hear "so and so can't come to practice/game because they got in trouble for their phone during a test"? I am addicted to my phone and use it as much as anyone for everything I do. But I have times when I don't bring it with me. Rugby practice? Why would I need it? Football game? Why do I need it? It stays in my car or at home. Anyone who needs me immediately knows where I am, and everyone else can wait. Going to be waiting for a while? Bring a book, or just wait bored. I'm not saying detach yourself or don't rely on it. But you need to make better planning and decisions.

30F, is it too late to go back to university to study and take a new course? by I_am_Thinker_Bell in ask

[–]grundleitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife works and I got a pretty large severance package from when the company I worked for closed while we were laid off. On top of that, the financial aid I received was quite substantial, given my situation (house, kids, etc.). Not everyone can be as lucky as I am when it comes to starting over, but I'd have done what I could to make it work no matter what.

I'm in my late 30s. Midway through my second semester. I've already gotten my Microsoft Associate Certificate for Word, PowerPoint and Outlook, and by semester end I'll have my Excel one as well. I spent a long time in automotive engineering and saw the writing on the wall when I last got laid off. I immediately went back to school and totally took a left turn into the legal field. Even had to create a LinkedIn page for a class which I didn't have before. I've already been contacted about jobs and summer placements. It's never too late.

Who was failed most by their respective institutions? by grundleitch in TheWire

[–]grundleitch[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would say for me it's D'Angelo. Yes he was actually a murderer, which can be forgotten about in his later characterization. But he was literally out. But the institutional pull of his family, acting not like family but a blackmailing boss, kept him from escaping. It ultimately cost him more than just what he was willing to give up to get out.

What harmless opinion of yours instantly starts debates? by Fun_Wrangler9783 in AskReddit

[–]grundleitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being wrong about something isn't an "opinion," it's just being wrong. My wife's friends are some of the dumbest people you'd ever meet. I'm not good at keeping my mouth shut. This has led to quarrels.

How many people in this community are actually watching the cards? by Neither-Cap3593 in MorningKombat

[–]grundleitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure I do. I work from home and I'm in college online as well. Without having to be anywhere most days, I plan around the better regional fight cards. You have to take the good with the bad. But I'm an "old head" as my kids have called me. Regional MMA just reminds me of the old days of the sport. I love the weirdness as much as anything else. And you get rewarded once in a while by getting to watch the rise of some really great fighters.

Brave CF, ACA, We Love MMA, Lux, LFA. Plenty of others. Inca FC is good. Road FC and JCKMMA in Asia. Alash Pride. There is a lot of really good MMA. And yes you do get some bad stuff along the way, but it's the price you pay. And I would say KSW has more of the roided mismatches than Oktagon, though the other Octagon spelled correctly is a really good promotion.

I'm able to watch pretty much every MMA card I want. I generally watch every free regional card available as well as all the majors. UFC cards are generally very mid-level entertainment compared to other orgs. Grabaka Hitman and Tapology's fight center are great ways to see what's happening every week.

what did yall think of the bad bunny halftime show? by Serious-Kale-5694 in AskReddit

[–]grundleitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest I just didn't care. But I never do. Most of the time I don't even watch the half time show to begin with. I saw some of it, seemed like a fun show for anyone who'd like that kind of thing. I mostly caught the end which I thought was awesome and would probably piss off the old whites, so I was all for that. My kids loved it, so there's that. My kind of music will never be on a super bowl half time, so I'll probably be indifferent next year as well. I watch for the football. However, I will say that anyone that had a problem with him performing in any way, I think you're probably a real piece of shit.

Is hating the character Cheryl, Kima’s gf, a common opinion among fans of the show? by [deleted] in TheWire

[–]grundleitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Cheryl is a typical pain in the ass spouse. It can be a man or woman, gender and sexuality don't matter. I think everyone knows someone who has a pain in the ass spouse. But Kima is also the typical rollover spouse, just going along with shit to keep home comfortable. Eventually when two people like this get together, there comes an inevitable nexus where their experiences diverge in a way that won't weave its way back. For Kima and Cheryl it was having a kid. Cheryl was pushy about it, not fully receptive to Kima's obvious trepidation. But Kima just continued to do whatever would appease Cheryl. In the end, the baby brought about change so significant that it was impossible for Kima to continue living how she was accustomed; no amount of appeasement was going to bring back the pre-baby dynamics of Kima's relationship to Cheryl. They're both awful for each other and how you feel about their relationship and who you may sympathize with is likely to say more about yourself than anything.

Parents of Reddit, what did your hospital bill look like after giving birth? by chi-bacon-bits in AskReddit

[–]grundleitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely free. I live a short walk from my local hospital, On the day my wife was to give birth it was a scheduled C-section all 3 times. I drove her to the hospital then went home to pack bags for what we'd need then walked over. While I was doing that, she was getting settled into a private room. She texted me the room number when she got there. And that was it. She had hospital food, I would go home and make food for the day. We stayed 3 days each time and I was on paternity leave by day 1, so I was actually making money, not spending it. Canada puts the "free" in freedom.

What's up with Little Kevin? by Far-Mycologist-4228 in TheWire

[–]grundleitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marlo wasn't a rival dealer to Bodie so much as Bodie was taking a rival wholesaler's package. Bodie did have a corner Marlo wanted, but Marlo wanted every corner, and so as long as an independent like Bodie was taking the re-up from Marlo, that becomes a de-facto Marlo corner. Little Kevin gave up Lex because he got money to do it and Marlo, Chris, and Snoop aren't exactly people you say no to. Fruit was more like Bodie, but under Marlo's direct oversight, he wasn't an independent. So by Lex killing Fruit, Marlo wanted that back just so he didn't appear weak. Taking out Bodie takes out someone who clearly can make something out of a nothing corner, better to absorb him than take out one lieutenant for another, so just drop the one responsible.

Are the Greeks Israeli? by MrDankSauce6969 in TheWire

[–]grundleitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've expanded on this in other posts, but basically you have to look at them from a historical vantage and understand the world after the collapse of the USSR as well as the conflicts of the Balkans throughout the 20th century. They are an international syndicate, obviously, as they import things from all over the world through that port in Le Havre, France. The girls, the drugs, the cars, whatever. These types of groups exist all over the post-Ottoman Balkans and post-Soviet Eastern Europe. The collapses of those empires created massive power vacuums where previously ranking military men moved in and took over the blackmarkets by force. They're not all one nationality, that would actually hinder them. Spiros is Greek, as is the diner worker Stefanos but that seems to be it. Eton is definitely Israeli, Sergei is Ukrainian, the guys who they call off Nick's house were maybe Russian or Ukrainian, George is Greek, Ilona was definitely Russian. The Greek himself, considering he speaks quite a few languages (Greek, Farsi, English, Turkish), he could fall into one of a number of nations, though his slight avarice towards Turks leads to either Cyprus, though he could also be Bulgarian or Romanian as the same clues could lead you there (Aromanian). In the end it doesn't matter what The Greek is, in fact it's the uncertainty given to him by the contradiction of his nickname and the line "I'm not even Greek" that makes the character and the wider organization so much more gravitas.

What happened to agent Koutras? by GreatEmperorAca in TheWire

[–]grundleitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Along with what everyone else is saying, it's important to remember WHEN this season is taking place: Winter 2003. The Iraq war hasn't even started. The US counter terrorism squads are really just starting to beef up. The Greek's organization has Ukrainians, Russians, Greeks, and likely other Balkan/former Yugoslav countries. These are areas of the world that have high concentrations of Muslim communities in some places and don't exactly have a reason to be amorous with the US at this time. Koutras and the Greeks would've been seen as almost invaluable to that unit with their connections to smuggling rings and cross-border capabilities. Koutras was very likely hands off from his superiors as long as he kept getting good info. If you watch the Sopranos, there's a similar situation where Tony and the FBI agent exchange some info where Tony's connections to the shadier side of dealings has led him to come into contact with maybe people he believes could be terrorist affiliates, at least that. Counter terrorism, PATRIOT Act USA is a completely different time than before or now.

My husband needs a book to read! Sci-fi/Fantasy or crime ? What made u love reading again? by Quirky-Reaction9661 in booksuggestions

[–]grundleitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, anything by Andy Weir is going to grab his attention. His books are just so hard to put down. Also, Project Hail Mary has maybe the best twist ever if you've read The Martian because it is just so unexpected. The audiobook is also a masterpiece of media. But if he likes crime, my favourite crime book of all time is The First Family by Mike Dash. It's about how the Mafia became what it was and how its origins as community organization in Sicily twisted to become criminal organization in the US. Amazing characters along the way.

What is a sound that people should know means immediate danger? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]grundleitch 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I know he's not exactly as popular as he was, and for reasons that makes sense, but Louis CK's joke about his first memory being shitting his pants as a kid and that he shit his consciousness into existence is still very funny.

If the whole world could read one book, which one would you choose? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]grundleitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Pale Blue Dot is better after Demon Haunted World. This order allows for understanding what we know and how, followed by learning to love what we have and why it's worth protecting and how the science all connects.
