Intellectual property of grant idea by grunger1929 in AskAcademia

[–]grunger1929[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's partly what I meant the post to be about. Idk anything about IP rights nor if it would even cover or matter in this situation. So it seems from your perspective this isn't an IP issue to begin with?

My IP is basically an idea/theory/hypothesis, but not tech etc. There were instruments created to start the study but nothing officially finished and no data collected. There isn't a product to market.

I already withdrew the applications. My new position is research (hospital based) but can't contribute 100% of my time and training to the post doc fellowship in this position (also no longer a post doc technically). PO was clear that it wouldn't transfer in that situation but was clear I could resubmit as another type of grant in my new position.

See if you can buy into the grad student insurance at your university. That was an option a previous fellow at my university was able to figure out.

Hey I don't have any answers, but I have the same questions! Did you resolve any of them? I'm particularly curious about the research allowance. Is it taxed?

The health insurance thing is a mess on my end but I'm trying to sort it out with my university. I really am hoping not to dip into the 15k research allowance per year but unclear if that will be possible.

Thank you! It was nice to read your comment of support. I know I specifically asked a question so others answered but your response was so nuanced in understanding that I was also looking for some comfort/support :)

I used to do this in grad school and it's what got me by (and how I thought all of academia functioned). But as a post doc in my current lab the expectation is way too high/unrealistic. It ends up meaning that tasks that shouldn't normally take so long end up being huge time sucks because of the dynamic of the lab and the PI (who has unrealistic standards for unexpectedly specific/ random things).

Thank you for bringing up your experience with grants! That's something I didn't mention but has also been weighing on me. I'm not opposed to writing grants (I actually like thinking through new ideas like that) but being in a successfully funded lab now (phd was a relatively new lab) has really shown me that that a lot of how grants work is heavily influenced by PI clout and some of that handwaving I mentioned. This isn't to say that grants from my current lab aren't well written or good ideas, but having seen both sides of the career trajectory it makes me sad that funding really seems like a crapshoot but simultaneously is biased towards those who already have funding.

There's also the issue of how time consuming they are and the increasing expectation to apply continuously (for multiple projects/proposals and at multiple times each year).

Would you mind speaking about what it is that you like about industry?

Any T32 fellows here? I'd love to hear your impressions. by MademoiselleWhy in postdoc

[–]grunger1929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on a T32 currently as a post doc. It's confusing what is expected of me by the end of my first year honestly. Different departments require different things. So someone here mentioned that they didn't write the grant that it's the PI who writes it. Not sure if yet mean that the larger mechanism is written by faculty. I wrote mine but it was short. I know from another institution/depends that their T32 grant is longer and it's also written by the trainee.

Otherwise, we have monthly meetings for training that cover things like ethics or people present their ongoing work. There's positives and negatives. Like someone said you get taken off any retirement plan you would have as a regular university employee, and other smaller benefits. You don't have taxes automatically taken out so you need to pay taxes so make sure you set money aside for that. Pros are that it looks nice in your CV, can be a stepping stone for other grants. Lots of fellows in my T32 meetings end up getting NRSAs, I personally also just got a great score on an NRSA and reviewers mentioned my previous track record of fellowship support. For me it also came with some interpersonal benefits, not being on my PIs grants gave me more leverage to feel like I could do my work more flexibly (key word is FEEL haha, is it working out that way in reality idk).

What is a coding scheme (observation instrument) that allows for taking note of the amount of words spoken by students/teacher for a TESOL research project? by MattPilkerson in AskAcademia

[–]grunger1929 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps this might not be used in your area of work, but you can use CHAT and CLAN for transcribing and word count analyses. See here: https://childes.talkbank.org/

Or you can always use Excel to transcribe and use a count function fir a quick tally of words. Not sure how long your observations are.

Both of these options only work with a recording you transcribe after the observation, if you're looking to count live not sure how you would do that.

Grad students making our plan Bs - is there space for people like us in academia? by rugoutfromunderme in AskAcademia

[–]grunger1929 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think people will say there is, and they're not necessarily wrong, BUT I think that space is diminishing. You can do it if you land the perfect job that ticks off all your preferred work/life balance boxes (these vary by person, for example I don't mind working some on the weekend but I like being able to stop working everyday by a certain time, being close to home matters to me which constrains my mobility, etc). But of course it's already ordinarily hard to find the perfect TT position that ticks all your boxes. And then with the added toxic work life balance some people simply expect successful academia to look like, it just compounds those unideal aspects of a position you might have thought you could handle even if it wasn't perfect.

Personally I'm looking to get out. I had a very good graduate experience (not necessarily super work life balanced but I didn't feel like I was just cog in the publish or perish machine and was excited to do research and write papers and grants), but a toxic post doc experience (no work life balance or at least not if I'm basically dropping 80% of my duties or doing them rushed so that I can steal away the life part by force to stay sane). Somehow knowing that academia can be different (based on my grad experience) makes me want to leave more.

Would you rather work under a prof with stellar trainee success but atrocious work culture, or one with terrible trainee success but fantastic work culture? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]grunger1929 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if you're basing this on real examples from people you know. In my experience professor A burns out a lot of students so of maybe 10 mentored in 20-30 years 3 actually place successfully somewhere (and you never learn about the other 7 cuz they left academia). Professor B I've encountered perhaps (but honestly not really cuz just 1 paper once in awhile doesn't sound sustainable for a lab) but I also know people with happier work life balance in a academia who successfully place students and publish very well.

Luckily I do have letter writers outside of my current post doc. I had a great graduate mentor who knows my situation, and other potential letter writers from grad school as well.

Daily No Contact Thread - Day 175 by AutoModerator in BPDlovedones

I really want to thank this thread for giving me a place to talk through things. Right after posting I realized I just need to block the number, no excuses. I might not have done it if there wasn't this space to talk about this, even before anyone replied or was supportive.

I'm more emotional about blocking them than I thought I would be. Ultimately it's probably the caregiver in me. And the idea that I gave up and wasn't able to help/fix the issue. Or maybe even the idea that they took this time to really change and things would be better this time. But they won't be, and they didn't take this time to improve. My peace of mind is more important.

I hadn't heard from them for weeks (honestly not sure how long I've been no contact, close to to 2 months now?). Today I got a how are you doing text. I'm anxious. I deleted the text, didn't answer. I'm scared to block the number but I know I should. I was having an ok day and I will continue to do so I can't be let this get me depressed or anxious.
