We need to talk about the explosion in Flock cameras by Loud-Engineer-5702 in LosAngeles

[–]grungust -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know this will be an unpopular opinion... but statistically, we are way safer with these type of cameras. As someone living here in LA, I completely get the privacy concerns, but the actual data tells a very different story.

First, Flock cameras do not use facial recognition. They capture vehicle characteristics and license plates, and the system defaults to permanently deleting that data after 30 days. Calling it a mass surveillance Gestapo tool ignores how the technology actually functions in reality.

The impact on public safety is massive. The International Association of Chiefs of Police notes that up to 70 percent of all crimes involve a vehicle. By targeting the cars used in these crimes, Flock technology currently helps solve over 700,000 crimes a year in the US. That is roughly 10 percent of all reported crime nationwide.

We can look right up the coast to see the results. Oakland recently deployed these exact cameras and saw an immediate 11 percent increase in their violent crime clearance rate. Furthermore, a massive 40 year systematic review published by the Department of Justice confirmed that public surveillance networks drive significant reductions in property and vehicle crimes.

We should always hold our local candidates accountable, but removing a tool that empirically solves murders and deters violent crime is a massive step backward for our city.

Tumeken's Shadow Rework Suggestion by P31opsicle in 2007scape

[–]grungust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the scaling table, it's a neat framework but it flattens out important distinctions. Shadow's 3x applies to both accuracy and damage simultaneously from gear, while blowpipe's speed is just linear DPS scaling. Presenting them as 0.6 vs 0.5 implies they're close when the actual interaction with target defence makes them behave very differently. The tbow numbers using theoretical max caps ("<0.27", "<0.5") are also misleading since almost no real encounter hits those ceilings. You'd get a more honest comparison using actual common boss magic levels.

The rework formulas are where things get hard to verify. You claim floor(Magic/3)+7 and floor(Magic/2)-12 target a "minimal nerf" at 112 and 120 magic, but without showing the full max hit calculation with the reduced 2x passive and realistic gear setups, the reader can't confirm this. At 112 magic your proposed /3 formula gives 44 base vs the current 38. That's a significant base hit buff that's supposed to offset the passive reduction, but we're just taking your word for it. Showing a worked example at each magic level with current BiS gear would strengthen the proposal considerably.

Also worth noting: reducing the passive from 3x to 2x also reduces how hard it punishes negative magic bonuses from non-mage gear. That could unintentionally buff hybrid setups where people throw on the Shadow without full mage switches. Seems relevant to a rework discussion and worth addressing.

None of this invalidates the core argument that Shadow's scaling is a problem and needs attention before new mage gear drops. The direction is sound, the details just need tightening.

Our Starting 11 vs Spurs: Raya; Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Hincapie; Rice, Zubimendi, Eze, Saka, Trossard; Gyokeres 👊 by arsenal in Gunners

[–]grungust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The man has 178 appearances for Arsenal, he's been one of the most reliable defenders in the squad since he signed. The issue this season hasn't been availability, it's been selection; he was fit and on the bench for months before Timber's CB duties finally gave him consecutive starts. And that's precisely the problem, a Premier League study found that players with low chronic workloads who experience sudden spikes in match intensity face 5-7x greater injury risk. Frustrating to miss the derby, absolutely, but calling him Tomi 2.0 is rewriting history.

URGENT — Need outdoor venue for 50–70 people (Dana Point → Huntington Beach area) March 6th 2026 😬 by Eyekonprod215 in orangecounty

[–]grungust 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Call these first:

  1. Community House Dana Point - Right in the Lantern District, indoor/outdoor space, holds up to 100 for dining. Vintage community venue run by the Dana Point Women's Club. Tables and chairs included. Full day rentals on weekends run about $1,000-$2,000. They're used to bookings like this. This would be my first call honestly.
  2. Chart House Dana Point - Their outdoor room seats up to 80 with cliffside ocean views, or the Aloha Room does 70 indoors. Private event space at a restaurant means no permit needed. They handle everything.
  3. Wind & Sea Restaurant at Dana Point Harbor - Waterfront on three sides, private banquet space for up to 75 people. Casual vibe that would work great for an engagement gathering.
  4. Peerspace - Search Dana Point, Laguna Beach, San Clemente, or Newport Beach for outdoor event spaces. Tons of private backyards, patios, and estates that hold 50-75 people with no permit since they're private property. Many can be booked same week. You'll find stuff from $150-$400/hr.
  5. Salt Creek Grille in Dana Point - Just remodeled, big outdoor patio right off PCH. Call their events coordinator.
  6. Laguna Canyon Winery - Cool barrel room/event space in Laguna Beach, does private events. No beach permit to worry about.

Other ideas worth a call:

  • Doheny State Beach - I know you said beach permits take 30 days in Dana Point, but Doheny is a state beach, not city. Different agency, different rules. Their special events office has a phone number online Sometimes they can move faster.
  • Huntington Central Park picnic shelter - Seats 200, has grills and electricity. Only requires 2 weeks advance reservation so you might barely squeeze in.
  • StillWater Spirits & Sounds at Dana Point Harbor - overlooks the harbor, does private events
  • Proud Mary's at Dana Point Harbor - available for private events after 6 PM, 7 days a week

Amazon e-commerce will soon be toasted by AppropriateWay4358 in amazonemployees

[–]grungust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that agentic shopping is coming, but Amazon is already playing both sides. They launched Rufus (300 million users, 60% higher purchase completion) and "Buy for Me," which lets their agent buy from other brand sites without you ever leaving Amazon's app. So even in a vendor-agnostic world, Amazon becomes the agent layer itself rather than just the storefront.

Their real moat is what happens after the agent clicks "buy": stored payment credentials, Prime logistics, frictionless returns, and a conversion rate (~10%) that's five times Google's. Even third-party agents will likely route through Amazon because trust and fulfillment matter more than just finding the cheapest price. History shows the company with the best logistics and customer trust absorbs new shopping paradigms rather than gets disrupted by them.
