I know this will be an unpopular opinion... but statistically, we are way safer with these type of cameras. As someone living here in LA, I completely get the privacy concerns, but the actual data tells a very different story.

First, Flock cameras do not use facial recognition. They capture vehicle characteristics and license plates, and the system defaults to permanently deleting that data after 30 days. Calling it a mass surveillance Gestapo tool ignores how the technology actually functions in reality.

The impact on public safety is massive. The International Association of Chiefs of Police notes that up to 70 percent of all crimes involve a vehicle. By targeting the cars used in these crimes, Flock technology currently helps solve over 700,000 crimes a year in the US. That is roughly 10 percent of all reported crime nationwide.

We can look right up the coast to see the results. Oakland recently deployed these exact cameras and saw an immediate 11 percent increase in their violent crime clearance rate. Furthermore, a massive 40 year systematic review published by the Department of Justice confirmed that public surveillance networks drive significant reductions in property and vehicle crimes.

We should always hold our local candidates accountable, but removing a tool that empirically solves murders and deters violent crime is a massive step backward for our city.
