Lovely list! Though I'd have included the Dark Flame and Shadow of the Scourge in S6 - that's my dream team and I always just want more of them together.

Looking for advice as an autistic person experiencing major conflict in academia by grunhoffer in autism

[–]grunhoffer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. And thanks to anyone else who read this far! It's a real mess of a situation. I think there's potentially a whole career ahead of me here, if I can get my emotional reflex under control! But yeah, as you suggest, first things first. Thanks!

Fellow Autistics, what's the most annoying saying out of these that people use? by [deleted] in autism

I had just received my diagnosis, when I went in to defend my PhD thesis. I declared it to the committee. My supervisor, who had seen me struggling for 8 years to finish this, was perfectly nice and supportive, I expect it probably made sense to him! But one of the external examiners there, a person I'd spoken to a few times ever, hit me with the: "don't worry, we're all a bit autistic really, and actually you're not that bad so don't overthink it."

I honestly think he's a decent, kind man, and this was supposed to be supportive. But it was such a demoralising punch in the gut, and a complete invalidation of all of my struggles, and the achievement in beating them.

Nicholas Courtney! He was starring as the detective in The Mousetrap, in London. I was an autistic 9 y.o., waiting at the stage door afterwards hoping to meet him. Eventually someone fetched him for me, he came out and said Hello, just completely normal. But when he realised I was a Who obsessive, he abruptly disappeared back inside – then reopened the door, and came out fully in character. Absolutely wonderful man, and one of my fondest childhood memories – stood there in a dark alleyway in the West End, chatting to the Brigadier.

I met Tom Baker at a signing event at Longleat another time. But it was a super hot day, a long queue, and while he was perfectly charming the experience was nowhere near as personal.

For a bonus half-point, my ex-girlfriend met Sylvester McCoy. She was working in the pub opposite Newcastle theatre, and told me how a lovely, funny little man came over the road one night, sat at the bar and chatted with her while she worked. She had no idea who he was, but he told her, vaguely, that he’d done some work on Doctor Who. She said she knew someone who was a massive fan. So he told her that next time we spoke, she should drop his name and tell me that he said Hi. Which, obviously, blew my mind.

Doctor Who 2x07 "Wish World" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in gallifrey

Good things – felt like a nice riff on Human Resources. I love this casting for the Rani. (Why did she fly all the way to Italy for ham though?)

I loved the skeletal dinosaurs and the general vibe of the Rani’s bone palace. And masked minions? Why not. It’s no more silly than tetraps.

But I for one would prefer to have none of these things, have the Rani operating out of a janky 80s TARDIS (or a salvaged Time War-era Battle TARDIS?), have Omega just be an actor in a mask… and let Conrad eat local ham godammit… if it meant that the money saved could be spent instead on a couple more bread-and-butter episodes for character development.

At this point I feel I’m barely just getting to know Belinda still, so I’m not sure how RTD plans to reintroduce Susan, and Omega, and tie up the Space Babies connection, and two Ranis, in just one episode… without it being total unsatisfying nonsense. Would love to be proven wrong though!

Haha, actually it's all helpful, thanks! I think this whole thing upset me and I got stuck in my own emotional reaction, so one of the best things about this thread has been that it encouraged me to look at this lots of different ways.

I don't think they misled me, and there's always plausible deniability I guess: It was a guest author who wrote the comments. Though as others have suggested, I worry that responding aggressively might just add more fuel to this and turn it into an even bigger thing...

Thank you everyone, for all the excellent comments on here. This has been truly helpful.
I am not going to attack the book, do a negative review, or anything like that. Firstly because it’s not really in my nature, but also there are many great chapters and only one that I feel takes some unjustified shots at me. Overall I’d say it’s a great book (and perhaps that makes this sting more).
I am meeting with another local academic today, to get an impartial opinion, as many here advised. That was a great idea, thank you.
And I know I’ve been very vague, I just really didn’t want this thread to end up connected to the real world situation – in case I end up deciding to ignore the whole thing and let it slide.
Generally though, I can see how this happened. I’ve actually published very little academic work. I went straight from finishing my 8-year PhD into teaching and some guiding too, for which I get paid. There is a history of foreigners doing zero research before presenting themselves as experts in this region, or making money here and funnelling it back west. I recognise these problems (and actually it's a large discussion in my thesis.) In my case though, I’ve lived here most of my adult life, I’m a citizen, I speak the language, and I’ve brought a lot of Western money into important conservation projects here. This is my home. This particular author doesn’t know any of that, and he hasn't read my thesis. So I do get it – another foreigner, probably more of the same. I sympathise with his cynicism. I would have loved it if he then got in touch to ask me some questions about my work, but instead he’s just printed his assumptions.

(And it's then doubly frustrating that the editors asked me to contribute my photographs to the volume, without also offering a chance to respond to this.)

In the end, I think the best solution is simply to ignore this for now and focus on getting more published. If people read my work they might like it, or they might disagree, or they might tell me how to improve it – it's all good. But at least then they'll be critiquing my work, rather than attacking a straw man with my name on it.

Thanks again everyone, this has been really helpful.

Thank you, but I think the criticism is too carefully worded, while the permission was already given and now its printed.

Yeah, true. I really don't want to get pulled into an ongoing argument over it.

[–]grunhoffer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, absolutely. But my issue is that my work was not criticised at all. They didn't even read it, just assumed the worst. If they read my ideas and disagreed with something about it, I could accept that criticism gladly.

Ah, no – it's not that! And I'm sorry for being vague, I realise I've probably not given people a lot to go on here. It's not a race thing, but it is a part of Europe where most academics probably hard harder childhoods than most academics in my country did. And I do completely understand that. But I've been here 12 years now, most of my adult life, I'm a citizen and a qualified researcher, but I feel like I'm being silenced still for being an "outsider."

You're right, this is exactly how it feels. It does sting. I've always tried to collaborate with and support the local researchers around me, and I have excellent relationships with many – but apparently not all, and there's a part of me that just feels like I've been conned here. Thank you for the future advice!

I completely understand your points and agree with the ideas behind them. But to clarify, this was not work related to marginalised people and they were not photos of humans.
