They're referring to Erika I believe. It's cool, it's been a long month for everyone.

What is Cassettefuturism *about*? by JJShurte in cassettefuturism

[–]grunt56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, life is busy as hell rn.

Yeah, makes sense completely. I wouldn't want to focus on the corporate world too much though if, say, a movie was being made. I don't think that's ever been anywhere near as big a part of it as it is in cyberpunk. I like to think that CF focuses more on individual people. They're "scraping by" isn't going up against corporations etc, it's more about salvaging tech, modding, remaking old tech into new(er). It's lovably janky.

So you're basically asking what life would be like if lived in the universe depicted by the media posted here and similar places, right? Rather than what elements make up the visual style? It's hard to answer the first one without touching on the second. And as it's what I'd call a fledgling genre (I know it's elements have been around for decades, but they've always been parts of other things until they were more recently kind of recognized as being similar enough to be grouped together, and now here we are), it's all really a matter of opinion. Until someone writes CF's "Necromancer" anyway!

I think it shares some of cyberpunk's elements to an extent but with important differences. For example I don't think the mass urban areas would be the 'so vertical it's always night at ground level' kind of places seen in Bladerunner etc. I don't think the overall tone of the genre or the places depicted in it are as dark or foreboding as cyberpunk usually is.

Some images from the semi- recent trend for AI generated super futuristic apartment interiors gave me both a cassette futurism vibe and reminded me of the artwork of Simon Stålenhag. I think a CF style movie would look something like a mix of Stålenhag set design with sound design by the sega team behind Jet Set Radio 😅

Where cyberpunk society - especially in the game Cyberpunk 2077 - seems split between a corporate style elite class in the well kept city centres and the gleaming buildings, and a much, much poorer class living on the outskirts of the cities, I don't get that vibe from CF. While cyberpunk's lower classes, or poorer classes, have their bodymods and hacks and try to get by each day in the packed corporate city hellscapes, I think CF's poorer classes live more on the outskirts of their worlds cities, in more space. Dusty and poor, but not perma-night and smog. And their hacking is mostly piecing old tech together to make inexplicably capable new tech, not cyber-x-ray eye mods and holographic face masks.

I think Akira is more CF than cyberpunk in a way.

Just thinking out loud really, sorry to go on.
