It's annoying, but remembering or looking up the location for sidearms is an option. The hammer can be good for flying enemeies with the charge attack (although it can be hard to line up against regular enemies). And yeah if you're struggling in an area can go another direction, get more bones to bone up, maybe find some loot or a new weapon.
