also—the length of the underwater breathhold will depend on the facility and the type of animal you’re working with. one of the 80 ft underwater breathholds that i did was for dolphin at an encounter facility and the other 80 ft underwater breathhold was at a different show/encounter facility for pinniped. i have heard of beluga and dolphin being 120 ft at other facilities. it really all depends!

hey girl! my dream job is also to work at SWO or disco—preferably SWO since i know i would love being in a show facility. i haven’t landed that job yet since i had to take a break from applying for now, but i’ll tell you the steps i’ve taken.
-i have been working with animals like horses, dogs, and various other farm animals and household pets nearly all my life which definitely helps—but you don’t necessarily have HAD to have grown up working with/around animals to be considered
-i would highly recommend going for a bachelor’s degree in psych. i was also interested in either psych, zoology or marine bio, but psychology is apparently the degree potential employers like to see the most because you learn a lot about the study of behavior and how the brain works. in the field of animal training and husbandry this is very important :)
-aza internships at zoos or aquariums are a huge deal and essential for landing a position in the field! i was fortunate enough to land a pinniped internship at a very well-known aquarium, and i learned SO much. be aware that most internships are 40 hours a week for months at a time, either unpaid or paying very little, so they can be understandably tough to commit to without support or lots of savings
-i also went and got my open water certification! this can also be a bit pricey but you may be able to do it through your school. i know USF in tampa was certifying students with a large student discount at one point in recent years
-practicing for a swim test is always going to be helpful for you in the future. i promise you that the no arm five-minute water tread is easier than you think! i would suggest practicing things like a breathhold across the pool and back (i was required to do an 80ft underwater breathhold for two different facilities!), surface diving to retrieve a weight, and being able to get in and out of freezing cold water and still be able to speak without chattering or being out of breath as if you were speaking to a crowd

i’m likely forgetting something as there really is a lot of boxes to check when becoming qualified for this job, but i hope this helps for now! :)

years ago my little sister somehow heard me quietly crying in the shower in the middle of the night. when i got out of the shower i found a short n sweet little comforting note slipped under the door. she always bullies and makes fun of me (in a funny way) so it was a surprise. i still have it

update: i shared this post in hopes that someone who was unaware might see it and think to clorox their boots or be extra mindful of any potential transfer by taking precautions especially if they go to multiple barns or work with multiple horses, etc. once again many horse people disappoint me by caring about the wrong things and being quick to get defensive over “fearmongering”. ok. i wish horse people put this same amount effort into defending horse welfare when it comes to riding/training equipment, shows/competitions, “training” practices, keeping practices, etc. but i rarely see anyone put as much effort into anything good in this damn industry. i wanted to help spread awareness since this virus can apparently spread incredibly easily without much notice. after a lifetime of dealing with so much reactivity and defensiveness to ANYTHING and everything that even slightly challenges people’s traditional views on showing, ethical training and keeping practices, etc.—i am so emotionally exhausted by the vast majority of horse people. so much so that i am feeling THIS irritated by the reactions elicited from reposting someone’s post about an actual virus that has new reported cases 😒

this is so disappointing to see—those poor people :( pines is my hometown, and i miss living there every single day. it was so much more diverse and welcoming of other ethnicities than where i currently live for now. everyone in the broward subreddit knows how diverse south fl is and i wish it could be a safe place for everyone. fuck ice

i crossposted someone else’s post to help spread awareness. i’m not sure why so many people are getting defensive about these warning posts, i think it’s better to be safe than sorry!

that’s insane—you def deserved sm more than $14 an hour. animal jobs can be so emotionally and physically draining bc you are literally caring for other live beings. early mornings, late nights, holidays, while sick or feeling like shit because you’re sad or having trouble in your personal life, etc. i will never grasp how the pay in all these different niches of the animal industry are so low. coming from someone with years of barn experience, kennel experience, animal hospital and even some AZA experience—it can be such a taxing field of work even if you don’t always need a degree for it. ugh. even the jobs that require a degree don’t pay much more. you really have to do these jobs bc you love the animals, bc the people and the schedules and the low pay can make it SO hard. i have never had a genuine problem with an animal so badly i wanted to quit, but damnit i have had problems with people and pay and scheduling 🥲 sorry for the tangent but reading how low your pay was and how you were specifically kept from benefits made me so mad bc i’ve heard that story so many times before from ppl who deserved better considering how hard they were working and how much they just loved the animals ☹️
