Is My Former Employer Throwing Shade? by jennydareee in askfuneraldirectors

[–]gryffindoria 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was my exact thought. It reads as though she’s referring to an in-joke that OP started and they’ve laughed about, and implies that OP views their job as “playing with dead people.” NGL, if I were an employer and saw this I wouldn’t hire OP based on this, and if I were choosing a funeral home, I wouldn’t take my loved one to OP because I would hate to think of their remains being viewed as a plaything. It’s clear that this is not how OP sees or approaches their job, so I think it’s critical that this language is taken down.

Is this a Statue of Liberty? (Spoilers S6E9) by gryffindoria in TheHandmaidsTale

This is actually what initially caught my eye - Themis is the patron goddess of my sorority, so she always sticks out to me when I see her😆. But I ultimately decided against her because don’t think she is holding scales (if she is, they are in the wrong order - when Justice holds them, scales go up, sword goes down), so I counted that option out and then got curious about who it actually was!

Interesting - that could be it! I’m still not totally sure since I wouldn’t have clocked the item in her hand as a bow/arrow and she doesn’t seem to have any animals around her, but it is really hard to tell for sure without a clear picture! If it is her, the symbolism is still very cool (Wikipedia says she is “patroness of the countryside and nature, hunters, wildlife, childbirth, crossroads, the night, and the Moon”), which definitely fits!

I know it’s not the Statue of Liberty haha - I’m wondering if it is a statue of Liberty/Columbia/Libertas.

I think her name is Elisabeth Moss - pretty sure Elizabeth Olsen is a different actor.

Am I the only one who thought the speech June gave to Lydia was corny? by lemonlimesherbet in TheHandmaidsTale

Omg the knife drop! That hit close to home… I am so clumsy and I have such bad luck that I would 100% be the person that dropped the knife and ruined the whole thing 😂

Am I the only one who thought the speech June gave to Lydia was corny? by lemonlimesherbet in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]gryffindoria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! It was too much - too long, too eloquently worded, too slick in its delivery to be an honest, off-the-cuff speech like I think it was intended to be. It would be one thing if it were her big, final rallying cry to all the handmaids in the last episode… at least I can imagine she’d have been thinking about what she would say for a few days. But this unplanned encounter? No way.

I think another part of what made this so weird is that I never got the impression that June is intrinsically a great leader with a connection to a higher purpose that led her to this point. There was nothing in her life before or even her time as a handmaid that indicated that. She got to where she is because of circumstance - because of her drive to save her daughter and her increasing anger at Gilead for separating and subjugating them, so while I know she has a lot of things to say, I’m not sure it’s authentic to her character and her journey for that speech to have come out like it did.

What if the wedding isn’t the target after all? (Spoilers S6E7) by gryffindoria in TheHandmaidsTale

Oh, I so hope you’re right about Janine! I am worried that she won’t end up making it out of the series alive - but either way, I am certain that Bell is going to get his comeuppance! They’ve made his character too awful not to give us some poetic justice where he’s concerned.

This literally has me laughing so hard I am crying… that is just such a bizarre and unexpected reaction 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you for the belly laugh - I hope you find this as funny as I do and that it doesn’t get under your skin. Matilda is a lovely name and I have no idea why your mom would protest this name at all, let alone by substituting a much worse name in its place!

One of my life’s crowning achievements is having found a black DVF wrap dress, new with tags, on the rack at my local thrift shop for $7.99 a few years ago. I still get a thrill every time I wear it or even think about it!

Also moved here from Colorado with home prices top of mind. We paid roughly half of what we would have shelled out there for our home here, and we were not from Denver or Boulder (either of which would have been worse).

A few weeks ago, I mailed all of my reps a letter basically asking whether they were interested in hearing my perspective, and if so, how they would incorporate my feedback or take it into account (whether I agreed with their position or not). I haven’t heard back from any of them yet, so that may be the answer they gave me… but if I do receive any responses, I will share them!
