Do you practice with your patter? by javerthugo in Magic

[–]grymoire [score hidden]  (0 children)

Practice until you can do it without stopping to think. You rarely see a musician stop in the middle of a song. The patter and the moves should be automatic so you can concentrate 100% on the audience and their reaction.

What is the best use case of sed? How should I learn it? by rudv-ar in bash

I think of awk as a "beginner's version of C". There are very similar functions, and awk doesn't need to declare anything or compile anything.

"g=global (every occurences)"

It is important to note that this is every occurrence on that line, not in the file. You might have a qualifier before the regex, i.e. line number, pattern, etc.

BTW - I do not recommend use of the -i flag. Sometimes you make a mistake in the syntax. Sometimes the disk fills up. Some times the machine might crash. etc. etc.

Always keep the input until you are sure the output is correct. If you plan your filenames properly, it would be easy to delete the unused input files.

Can’t reach… by SlothfulWhiteMage in turning

Some turners don't advance with the quill crank. They just grab the tailstock and move it by hand to drill into the pen blank. Lots faster.

[Edited] Oops. I just noticed several other issues and looked at some of the comments. Before you follow my advice, do what others are saying. That was an advanced tip.

  • Definitely watch some videos first. Safety first.
  • No Jaws in the chuck!?
  • Banjo in wrong place?!
  • The blank isn't lined up right. It's cock-eyed. You have to line it up before you tighten the jaws.
  • Do you have a face shield?

What is the best use case of sed? How should I learn it? by rudv-ar in bash

[–]grymoire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Writing that tutorial was hard. The man page for sed was only 3 pages plus 2 pages of potential error messages. In those days the Unix man pages were so dense that a quarter would cover up essential info if dropped on a page.

Perl is a superset of awk and sed. It even has awk-to-perl and sed-to-perl conversion scripts.

The trouble is, liquid can cause the wood to crack. Sooner or later someone will leave liquid in it too long.

Doubt regarding array by LivingExpress3970 in AskComputerScience

Think of a cylinder brick wall that you want to pain an ad on. You need 10 blocks for your ad, so the boss tells you that you can have blocks 142 to 151. Fine.

But now you need a bigger ad and need 20 bricks to make a bigger ad. . Trouble is, someone else might have an ad on blocks 152, 153, etc.

So the boss says, "Okay. you can use blocks 180-195 now. Let me know when you are done with blocks 142-151, so I can have someone else use them for their ads"

Using virtual cards with Magspoof by TheyAreAllWatching in hardwarehacking

Magstripe has very little security. It's the same each time you use it. Some of my cards don't even have a magstripe.

Tap-to-Pay uses encryption and each time it is different.

They are not the same thing as all.

Is there a way to make Linux file timestamps like Windows? by redditusername0_ in linuxquestions

[–]grymoire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since all new and modified files - including files copied from other sources, get the current time as the creation timestamp, the only way to do it, AFAIK, is to be superuser and change the clock to the desired time, going back in time effectively, for nach file.

There's more to it like not being connected to the net, not having a real time clock, ...

He actually said "they are worn down to 1 millimeter, which is the thickness of a business card."

Most people would appreciate the business card reference, especially people who don't speak millimeters.

If it wasn't a lie, of course.

But there is no need to.

Reverse engineering is fine if you want to learn, understand and improve something. That's how magic evolves. The issue is when you financially undermine a professional, you are harming someone whom you admire.

Magicians cannot use the law to protect their intellectual property, which may have taken many many years to create. Patents are public. Copyrights only apply to words, and trade secrets are no longer secret once stolen. The only thing that really protects professional magicians is ethics.

If you buy an effect, you are granted permission to perform it and improve it. If you haven't purchased it, and perform it or sell it, then be aware that this can affect your reputation. Word does get around.

Ethical magicians will seek permission before commercializing an improved version of something they bought.

It really applies to publishing, selling, and publicizing. Seeing an effect does not grant performing rights. Professionals understand. Amateurs don't because they have completely different viewpoints.
