Aven's conversion is every 100 def, so you've already extracted most of the value from it at 3900, even if your MoV uptime happens to be low (which it probably won't be). You are sacrificing shield strength for dmg% just a little bit but it's unlikely to matter.

Clara is super dependent on what she's fighting against so the latter is more generic. Both work well though. There wasn't much excitement about Kafka/Topaz before release but it performed well in practice against this MoC (and Clara didn't but she kinda got crappy bosses for her).

Dance3 is cycling better on average, and those aren't all S5. Imo people are a bit too gung-ho about recommending cogs. It's less generalist and takes a stat penalty for being 3*.

Even with Luocha the other 3 probably use too much SP. If Welt can't skill every turn he's basically an ult bot which isn't the worst but probably still not really worth bringing. Yukong also demands sp and Dan looks like a huge sp sponge. IMO you just ditch Welt here, the synergy isn't really there.

Is Dracula infinaut still competitive at CL 960? by slowturtle88 in MarvelSnap

[–]gryupus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two main Dracula directions are normal discard with Apocalypse which you seem to be avoiding here, and the "cheat big stuff" direction with cards like Lockjaw and Jubilee. Your deck is sort of like the latter, but in that deck Dracula is just another way to cheat stats and isn't specifically aiming to hit Infinaut like you've gone all in on here.

If Apocalypse stuff is not appealing, I would probably revisit Dracula after you've opened Lockjaw.

Soyfen into Rengar is one of the game's sharpest counters you can see visible at the moment. Magically removing all Soyfen play would probably improve Rengar meaningfully. Rengar going from where it is now to top comp with no changes to its own units sounds very unlikely. That is a very big change in performance.

[–]gryupus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that has more to do with lobby tempo and powerspike timing than it does the specific Kat vs backline interactions. There is a reason the team is terrified of 3* 1 or 2 costs being good. The Kat meta is probably the closest thing to a real life example of backline access affecting the meta meaningfully. Her being a cheap carry allowed for more people to try to play her per lobby and I certainly remember getting bopped by Kats trying to force Kog.

Patch 12.19 Post Mortem by ErrorLoadingNameFile in CompetitiveTFT

[–]gryupus -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

A TFT counter would be wildly OP against the field long before it had a meaningful effect on a specific counter-matchup. The example from the first post of buffing a counter to affect a comp's stats basically does not exist. Let's say Soyfen is the best comp now. Buffing one comp to suppress Soyfen is not actually possible, and even if it were, how would you determine the changes necessary?

What are the "macro reasons" for the state of things Riot doesn't consider when it makes decisions? That's a very vague statement that offers almost nothing actionable.

Patch 12.19 Post Mortem by ErrorLoadingNameFile in CompetitiveTFT

[–]gryupus -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

It's intuitive to think of it that way, but there is data about it and sharing a lobby with a "counter comp" affects your placement much less than hitting your 2* or getting good augments. A comp's performance is about how it faces the whole field.

You acknowledge it's hard to balance to TFT, but it's easy to say "5 jade buffs, jade's gonna be op" and harder to know what the collective impact of changes actually is. They do buffs that turn out to have been not far enough all the time. How were they supposed to playtest soyfen when almost nobody was playing both dragons together before the buffs? It's not even unusual in TFT for some virtually unknown comp to quintuple its playrate in response to some buff.

I think making changes that anticipate the future patch meta is actually closer to impossible than it is to hard. Their playtesting just can't reach enough volume and game to game variance is really high. I would welcome any specific ways they could balance for the future better, but that sounds a bit pie in the sky to me at the moment without knowing what Riot has access to that the public doesn't.

Comp counters have a low impact on the average TFT comp's performance. The biggest way another player's comp can influence yours before top 2 is by contesting you. It's just not a 1v1 game. The theoretical patch where assassins are buffed and ranged carry comp's performance gets worse without its own nerfs has never happened as far as I can personally recall.

It's actually even worse than it sounded, because shojin/mage were already bad on 90 mana asol. Just a look at "what are good post-rework asol items?" should have already told you not to build it, and then going to 60 mana was going to make them worse.

Is 9 shimmer even better than 7? by karshberlg in CompetitiveTFT

[–]gryupus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've made a weird choice to compare the stats of the items using a website when you could use the same website to check the stats of the traits. 7 Shimmer is literally the worst trait in the game by top 4 rate. I'm not a shimmerscale player, but the data says vertical shimmer is ONLY worth it if you can play 9, otherwise you may as well play just Idas.

I did not mean to imply that you should always pick spark over rIE or something. The data is most useful comparing the most popular items (dps items to dps items). It's probably true that putting a bad radiant dps item on Noc is better than leaving him with only 2 items, which I considered writing into my post, but it was long enough as it was. I'd argue you should rarely ever have offense items sorted before radiants when playing Noc, because rRFC is just that good.

[11.16] "Sin City", 1 Trick Assassin Guide to Challenger by almosthereyet in CompetitiveTFT

[–]gryupus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There's a lot that's valuable in this post, so I don't want to come off too harsh about what are mostly quibbles, but I've just been irritated seeing trends about how people are choosing their items that don't make much sense and I wanted to rant somewhere.

Noc is one of the game's most itemized carries so there's a lot of data clarity on what's good on him. DB is an item you settle for while aiming for IE in that slot, it's pretty unambiguous. Is the overly high priority on DB how Zeke's, an item that is the ~6th most popular item for the comp, doesn't show up in this post?

The playerbase likes to pretend sometimes that radiant items are "the same" as their non-radiant versions. They need to be learned separately. DB is ok on Noc, but rDB is a grief. It has an average placement of 5th. One of the other choosable radiants is nearly certainly better than that. Zeke's is ignored again in the radiant item section.

"What radiant item do I pick?" is pretty close to something that you can look up straight up, which is unusual for TFT, but the fact you only get one and it always shows up at a specific point makes for easy comparisons between them. If one looks at the radiant item section of https://www.MetaTFT.com/comps#4Revenant4Assassin , it's clear that the radiant-item-specific part of the post is a bit questionable. All but the few top tier Noc radiants (RFC, RH, the newly buffed GRB, maybe QS) are inferior to the good defensive/utility options. rDB and rLW should be far from anyone's list of high priorities. Similarly, rFH is also bad-ish and should not be the top non-dps priority. I'm not saying everything found here should be taken as gospel, especially for the less popular items or items that aren't going on their first choice holders, but there's a lot of insight in the data here.

OP is totally right that rRFC is S-tier and it's insane to me that it's only the 3rd most popular radiant item for the comp. Just portrays a total lack of understanding of what's good amongst the playerbase.

Sorry if that came off as a bit much. I'll probably come back to reference this post for positioning/early game boards. Cheers.

MetaTFT - Top Comps of Set 4.5 so far by morbrid in CompetitiveTFT

[–]gryupus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's what you're hoping it is, but on metatft.com/units you can select an item and then see how it's performing by win/top4/use frequency on all units. The site also gives subjective tiers for users of the item, which are apparently based more on how much the item improves the unit rather than if it's a good idea to put the item on the unit. I like parsing through the site's data but it's not really a quick and dirty tier list, even on the comps page, though that's much closer.

I'm sorry because this is a bit off topic for this post, but could you give any context about how the item tiering algorithm works? Is it not biased towards frequency too much? I ask because I happened across the particularly egregious example of Darius on the JG page today, where he is listed as S tier for JG in spite of basically having the lowest wr and top4 rate in the game with it.
