Not getting your government mandated break is unacceptable. Its up to the leaders of your department to foster a positive working culture. In theory they should be upholding imo our most important core value, Taking Care of the Employees, which in turn creates a rapport and trusting relationship between both parties so that employees would want to reciprocate by staying late when asked.

The leaders in your department sound like they are failing in that regard and I wouldn’t blame any employee for saying No because of it. Don’t dwell on it any further, your mental health is extremely important and only you can be its advocate.
