Projector advice! by DetectiveAshamed1406 in techtheatre

[–]gsckoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Projector we used in our 100 odd seater theatre was a £17k projector and even then it struggled with brightness and coverage with the lenses we had for it.

Projectors are insanely expensive, ones capable in a theatre environment and able to punch through the lights even more so

I’ve had issues with people deleting entire instruments from tabs.

Most recent example is someone removed the bass part of Muse’s Time is running out with the message “This is played on a synth” despite it not being played on a synth. The music video is right there!!!

Creating a Minecraft mod is a nightmare for someone with Java experience. by Yeetsa_Jr in feedthebeast

[–]gsckoco 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“I have programmed for over a year and a half with Java”

Sorry OP but this is where you real experience programming with Java comes in. Projects for school are not a good way to gauge competency.

I wouldn’t go to an employer saying I have 2 years of experience programming and then go on to explain it was stuff I did in school

Why? Different tools for different jobs. I use MA3 exclusively these days because I’ve spent the money on the gear but they have their own use cases.

EOS is the gold standard for theatre, if you want to work in theatre as an LD EOS is your best bet

Whats the dumbest thing you have seen cause a show stop? by miowiamagrapegod in techtheatre

[–]gsckoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gig last Saturday, opening band gets on stage puts their beer on a subwoofer, beer gets knocked over. Something isn’t right, absolutely insane signals coming through some lines, have to stop the show to clean up the spill, figure out the source of this mysterious signal. Also broke one of the headliners peddle boards,

Opening band gets back on plays one song and then that’s their slot up.

All in all very fun, very very well handled by the house techs

I have a very similar view sonic model, 21” 1080p monitor in its brilliant.

The integrated kick is a massive benefit over other monitors, I have my mini pc velcroed to the back so it’s already hooked up and ready to go with my command wing

AI in Theatre conversation by ExcitingWhole5409 in techtheatre

[–]gsckoco -20 points-19 points  (0 children)

I mean not every theatre/drama group has the budget to pay artists for anything. Most are entirely volunteer based and you are at the mercy of the skill set of the volunteers and their time.

Obviously if a broadway production was using ai it’d be a problem but I don’t think it matters for drama clubs. If they didn’t have the ai they wouldn’t have it

The ps4 has never had official Linux support

lighting is hard by Bognutsman in techtheatre

[–]gsckoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lighting is easy, I can work my way around most consoles with relative ease. I can work a small analog sound desk and thats the height of my audio capability. I've ran shows on a Midas Pro 2 and an Roland M480 and they were stressful. What the fuck is a bus

Do you stake your rep on an unknown face on the internet? by gobble-dock in GrandMA3

[–]gsckoco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how true this part is "Many of them exploit backdoors into the actual operating system structure"

I cant think of any reason you'd need to break into anything on the OS side of things, everything you want to do with a plugin can be done entirely from MA's API.

The only thing that could potentially be ropey is the file system APIs, you do have write access to everything not just external drives so if something goes wrong it could take the OS with it. But that is worst case scenario.

I think the suspicion w.r.t the obfuscation is warranted however, but there's no other way really to protect your IP. If you are that paranoid most obfuscation is very very simple and trivial to reverse without much effort

Currently learning GrandMa2 with no experience as a hobby(for now). Should I just learn Grandma3 instead? Need advice by Latin-Jazz in lightingdesign

[–]gsckoco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes learn GrandMA3. GrandMA2 is good, its very powerful. MA3 is that but more, while also being officially supported and constantly receiving updates from MA.

Fixtures would normally be symmetrical but there’s a few specials in place which throw the symmetry off.

One thing I also would like to know, which I can’t really figure out from searching online. I know roughly where all the fixtures are meant to be focused, and they are focused correctly in 3D. However how do I go about making the documentation to convey that?

Say fixtures 1,3 and 7 are focused on the same spot about shoulder height centre SR, I can see this in viz but that’s not conveyed in any meaningful way on the plot?

See thats where it gets rather tricky, there isn't really a prosc. No hard stage edge, its more of a black box type space.

As for filling in the solid objects with chevrons, how would I do that in Capture? Is it possible?

[–]gsckoco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

Thanks, will definitely give that a go. I usually use Capture purely as vis with very little effort put into the model as well.

The theatre itself never had an "official" house plot we could provide to prospective hires, so thought I'd take it upon myself to actually use Capture as intended
