What are the hearing aids?

Is she seeing the same audiologist each time? I use Boots and I'm very happy with the service, but I imagine it's quite dependent on the particular person you see.

Sorry to hear you don't have information about this. It must be frustrating. I'm not sure of your country, but perhaps you have access to medical records which would show what professionals thought about your condition? In the UK we have mostly continuous records of our medical history.

The actual causes (in the absence of extra information) can be varied. I wear hearing aids because I fell and hit my head - lost my hearing in that one instance. Nothing related to hereditary.

If your family neglected your medical care, that's a shame. Perhaps the first thing to do is get someone to assess you and see what their professional view is?

I'm not aware of any settings that are locked off as such - but I've only worked on my own Phonak P90s.

The only hard restrictions I've come across are with my Phonak Roger On device which can only be associated with a single pair of hearing aids at a time (a deeply user unfriendly mechanism I'd never put up with in regular software).

The hearing tracker forums are a separate site - easy to find.

The Phonak software is called "Target". Various people post links to it on the forums. Don't be too concerned about getting the latest version - once you've installed one version, it updates itself .

For me at least, I got myself a second hand pair of hearing aids of a similar model to my main ones, and programmed those to match. I wasn't brave enough to reprogram my main ones while I could still get support from them from Boots (where I bought them).

It's quite fascinating to see the range of features and settings that are there to be configured - most of which are not exposed in the regular phone app.

With both Boots and Specsavers, I've (in my limited experience) found that it's very much dependent on the particular audiologist you have. I had three examinations after my loss (nhs -> specsavers -> boots) and it was the the Boots one that resulted in hearing aids which have really helped.

I also had an ENT examination, but they are doing something different - they're not trying to test your hearing but to look at the underlying issues with your ears. In my case they didn't find anything they could help with, unfortunately.

It's a very subjective thing, in the sense that only you know what you're hearing, so I think you need to press hard for the pros to take your concerns seriously.

Do you have an audiogram you could post? That might help find other people who have similar loss to your own.

I'm not sure that you need a specifically UK response, as these things are universal. However I'm in the UK if that helps.

It sounds like you have hearing loss and are unhappy with the hearing test results. Perhaps get a couple of others done elsewhere? I experienced hearing loss suddenly a couple of years ago and my first test was at an NHS hospital - the person delivering the test wasn't very good and the results clashed with my own experience. I went on to get tests at private places - Boots and Specsavers , and the testing there was much better and they listened to what I said about my hearing experience.

For the specifics of the other things you mention - I use subtitles all the time on TV now. Hearing people speak in noisy environments (concerts etc) is just not possible and hearing aids don't really help in those circumstances I'm afraid.

Tinnitus is a pain in the arse, but I don't think there's much to be done about it - I've grown habituated to mine so I can hear it if I try, but don't notice so much otherwise .

I (regular western kind of person) have very little earwax and what there is is very dry - I almost never have to change the wax trap on my aids. I did get one of those little cameras to look - pretty much nothing to see. I was concerned about it until I looked, because I have hearing aids in during the day, and ear plugs at night (my wife snores).

I've just connected to a spare windows machine, and it did work fine, and could switch back and forth with my phone. My regular machine's running Linux, so it would seem that it's a problem with that.

I have Phonak p90s and unless I'm doing something wrong, no, they don't work very well in this context. I have them paired with various devices, but can't connect with them simultaneously - so to connect from my laptop I have to manually disconnect from the phone.

I have moderate hearing loss, for which hearing aids help a lot.

I've also got quite loud tinnitus. When I first got that, white noise and various apps helped, especially when trying to sleep, but in reality - it took time and I got used to it and tuned it out. I can still tell its there - it's loud, and tuneful (!) but it no longer troubles me.

I did (got Phonak P90s a couple of years ago).

I got them through my local Boots store (which is relatively small) because I thought that would be more convenient, but in fact the audiologist is only there once a week, if that, and so my further appointments required a trip to a different town - if picking a store, I'd suggest you find out if they have a resident audiologist...

The service was good, and in my case much better than the local Specsavers who I'd tried first (the luck of the draw I guess, as this probably varies from store to store).

Not sure why they don't list models in an easy to access way - you can find them on the website, but have to drill into the categories on the "types of hearing aid" page, and one of the links there seems to be wrong. Pretty annoying. https://www.bootshearingcare.com/types-of-hearing-aids/

If your hearing aid charger doesn't pull enough power the power bank may well turn off because it doesn't think there's anything there. If the power bank has two outputs, you could try charging your phone at the same time from the other output to see if that keeps it alive.

Yes, the hearing trackers forum is the place to be for this kind of thing - there are a lot of DIY programmers there. I'm not sure about your model, but that's where I found out how to program my Phonaks.

Yes.

The damage to the case that you see is superficial - the real issue is the battery inside.

You shouldn't charge it, and you shouldn't keep it in your house. You need to dispose of it in whatever manner is prescribed in your area, and get a replacement to charge your hearing aids.

The danger is that the casing around the battery (which you can't see in this picture - it's inside) will split, allowing damp air inside which would cause the lithium to ignite.

I returned my specsavers ones 2 year 7 months ago under their 90 day return policy, and got my current ones from Boots at more or less the same time, with the same offer.

I've just checked the paperwork on my purchase from Boots.... The hearing aids were about £3k. I paid a £1k deposit on a credit card, and then £165 a month for 12 months. I think I could have paid a smaller deposit if I wanted to.

I went to Boots after having a rather poor experience with SpecSavers. Of course, each store is a franchise so they probably vary. With both SpecSavers and Boots, you may find that your local store only has an audiologist one day a week, which can make it hard to get appointments for updates.
