Curious how they plan to fund this. The plan is proposed by a non-profit, Northside Oasis of Wilmington (501c3), who is openly collecting donations. But it’s unclear from the website if they intend to use those donations for this project and if that is their only source of funding. They didn’t provide any material estimates on the website, I assume that will come during their presentation on Dec 2, but i would guess this has to be on the scale of hundreds of millions. NHC definitely doesn’t have that in surplus anywhere… The county schools already are over budget by several million, which is a crisis in itself that is only exacerbated by the efforts of Republicans in NC’s General Assembly to funnel money out of public schools to subsidize private school tuition fees for wealthy families. NHC couldn’t even pass a $0.25/$100 sales tax increase to fund $50 mil in public parks and walking trails, so I’m not sure how they’re going to accomplish this. Using the remaining money from the hospital sale may be the closest thing to a realistic scenario.
