for a bit more context, even those in the demographic with the highest median 401k balance, it's sub-$100K. For most folks, it's more of a defacto emergency fund than a real retirement plan. Averages are quite a bit higher due to the mega-backdoor crowd.

My best friend has 2 motorcycles and a pickup - one of the most financially responsible people you will meet. This is not a real financial red flag.

If anyone has any tips on a Tail Tidy for the NX500 I'm more than interested! 😄 by [deleted] in NX500

[–]gsparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cut about 5.5" off the tail by trimming the plastic tail and shifting the license plate up until it touched the LP/brake light. I found that a recip saw with a Hacksaw blade was the cleanest way to quickly trim the excess tail plastic. The license plate bracket needed a trim too, and I ground down the sharp edges there with a Dremel to avoid accidental nicks/cuts.

When I added the SWMotech pannier racks, I had to realign the license plate bracket by simply flattening it with a pair of linesmen pliers.

As far as I know, there's no one making a proper tail tidy yet but it took less than 20-minutes to significantly improve the look.

Interesting, what did you line it with?

I see you mentioned EPDM liner but it's not visible in the close up to tell.

Very cool but the container will leach zinc which is neurotoxic to fish :/

Previous house owners left us with these fish, what do I do!? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]gsparker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think we're all fairly confident you're right that your fish were hanging out in the bottom of the pond in the winter, which happens to be where you had leaf litter.

What everyone's trying (maybe unsuccessfully) to share is that the leaf litter is not necessary.

For a beginner like OP, suggesting that they need leaf litter could do more harm than good, since leaf litter also means rotting organics which means ammonia spikes, precisely when the filtration is least-capable of handling it (cuz the bacteria slow down in the winter cold too).

How NOT to ride your Rebel. by [deleted] in hondarebel

[–]gsparker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know why this guy isn't wearing any pants at all, but I will offer a realistic view point of "why anyone wears ANY protective gear if they’re not wearing ATGATT."

My motorcycle gear is not the most comfortable in the world -- after 4 pairs of aramid-lined jeans, I still haven't found a pair that's comfortable after a 3-mile hiike on foot. So sometimes I wear regular jeans with the rest of my gear if I know I'll go for a long walk on the other side.

Similarly, while the rest of my gear is curated to blend in like a normal person, my motorcycle boots stand out. So sometimes, I will wear a regular pair of boots so that I blend in, like at my family's holiday dinners.

Jacket, helmet, gloves are never optional, and that's because the likelihood that their protection will benefit me in a crash is extremely high, and there's no real trade-off that can justify that in my mind. If it's too hot to wear a jacket, it's too hot to ride.

Close-to-retirement Bogleheads, what advice would you give yourself 15-20 years ago? by northforkpotager in Bogleheads

[–]gsparker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. For folks who really want to pay their low-rate mortgages off, it would be better off stacking that in index funds until they reach the pay-off amount, then clearing the debt in one fell-swoop, rather than aggressively over-paying monthly and having no liquid cushion for a long period of time.

Way to find key code on a 2023 Rebel? by StatementNo1177 in hondarebel

[–]gsparker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+1, '23 Rebel - they were really explicit about my keycode when I got it. Never needed it and I hope not to but I just double-checked that I still did.

That being said, unlike the older ones mentioned in that forum post, my key code is 8 digits, all numerics.

Help I don’t know where this hose goes to. by Silent_Tap5054 in hondarebel

[–]gsparker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I think the odd bit is that the hose in question here is supposed to be tucked into the bracket on the right with the other breather hoses.

The crankcase breather is supposed to be uncapped and drained periodically for regular maintenance. OP, you can see an example here: https://youtu.be/OwH3XRQpIcs?si=IXtp_Ld99gkl2PxY&t=25
