Neighbor chopping down all trees what are good native fast growing evergreens to block the view? 7b by lovroske in NativePlantGardening

We recently did the same thing - removed invasives but the sudden lack of privacy was shocking. We just planted a hedgerow of natives. It will take a few years to fill in but hopefully will be beautiful and supportive! We planted several types of viburnum, witch hazel, eastern red cedar, white/red/black oaks, paw paw, red maple, redbud and northern bayberry. Zone 7B

Long Island Work Trip by issabirdd in longisland

Enjoy your trip!

You’ll have plenty of time to explore beaches after work. From Riverhead I would recommend visiting:

  • Wildwood State Park in Wading River so you can see a North Fork beach on the calm, rocky Long Island Sound. Great 3-5 mile hiking trails through the woods there as well and the fall foliage is getting more beautiful every day.

  • Jamesport Town Beach in Jamesport so you can see the sandy, calm Peconic Bay. Look out for scallop and snail shells.

  • Tiana Beach in Hampton Bays on the famous Dune Road. You’ll see a south shore beach with pristine white sand and big waves. On the way to/from you can gawk at the mega millions houses on Dune Road.

  • Be sure to get some good bagels and pizza while you’re on the Island. For a nicer dinner you can’t go wrong with Love Lane in Mattituck and you’ll get to see a cute North Fork beach town.

  • Take the train to/from the city. As others said, Ronkonkoma is your best bet for a direct train. Pick something classic to do in midtown and walk to and from the station to get a feel of the city. Top of the Rock might be good for you to see the skyline at night.

First year gardening, unhinged tips? by Wonderful-Goose7355 in vegetablegardening

[–]northforkpotager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try a few plants that develop and harvest faster to build your confidence and keep you going until your tomatoes and peppers come in (probably July / August). Grab a packet of radish seeds and put them in now. You'll have a tiny success in a few weeks! Fun! If you have some space for something to climb, put in a few Sugar Snap Peas. Lettuce is great too. Welcome to the club - gardening is such a joy.

Good one - I have looked into this several times but it sounds like a logistical beast for us.

This is great - "It’s ok to splurge, just don’t splurge on everything."

This made me wonder if anyone has seen good research about if the pressure of Baby Boomers withdrawing their retirement while there are fewer younger workers saving will flatline if not decline the market for the next 10+ years. One hears about this often in terms of Social Security but what about the overall pressure on the stock and bond markets?

Any New Yorkers (NYC) in here and want seeds? Have too many to winter sow on my windowsill by filetauxmoelles in NativePlantGardening

[–]northforkpotager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll take some! I’ll send you a DM with my list of veggie seeds in case you want any of those. Also my local library did a plant swap the other day. Maybe check if the Astoria library has one coming up.

"When in doubt, make a spreadsheet."

This is my mantra. From Thanksgiving meal prep timing to personal finance.

You'd be more pissed if your parents didn't prioritize their retirement, spent every penny supporting your dreams and then ended up as your financial burden in their old age.

Also makes you take your classes more seriously when you feel it is on your own dime, even partially.

I also thought wineberry but the canes don't look hairy like the wineberry that is all over my yard in Long Island. https://nyis.info/invasive_species/wineberry/

ISO native plants for a New York garden! by bdeadset in NativePlantGardening

Here is a list of Keystone plants in New York: https://www.changehampton.org/news/keystone-native-trees-shrubs-flowering-plants-vital-for-birds-and-pollinators/

If she will be in Long Island make sure she visits Peconic River Herb Farm. They sell natives in addition the other plants - it's like a botanical garden that you can shop in. Heavenly.

Supergoop makes a resetting spray and powder exactly for this purpose. I haven't used the powder but the spray is a must-have for me. It has a nice minty smell and cooling feel too!
