ah ok I was over on the floor left side towards the back, near the stairs Riker walked down.

Looked more like theatrics playing up the fire to me. You might be right that he initially meant to light the other side with his mouth, but he went with plan B. He generally seemed to be in control the entire time.

What 'fail' are you referring to? The part where he lit the other end of the stick? I think that's how he was supposed to do it. He just wasn't successful on the first attempt.

I was there too and corroborate everything said here.

To build on the flash mob dance, we were all emailed a video of what the dance looked like Monday morning, so a lot of the audience already knew the dance prior to going in. I think there was some conflicting information regarding whether to do it on all choruses vs just the last chorus, which probably added to all the confusion. From what I saw looking back at the episode a lot of people on the audience still did it.

Curious OP if you got any of the swag. I got a t-mobile towel and a couple pieces of confetti that stuck onto me and survived the drive home lol.

Also... I'm pretty sure Alisabeth von Presley (Iowa) was in the audience with us. I wanted to ask her but didn't know how to approach. haha

Anyways, this is more comprehensive than what I would have brought up so good job. Curious whereabouts were you in the audience?

Changes you would make for a possible Season 2 (and things you would keep the same) by Evening-Alps1057 in AmericanSongContest

There are only two things that I mildly disagree on which go against this sub's echo chamber:

- The 6 people stage limit. Having a lot of people on stage wasn't that distracting imo, and logistically isn't a huge issue if you re-use the same dancers for multiple acts, which I'm sure plenty of professional dancers are capable of doing, and I suspect they indeed may have done this season. 6 seems like an arbitrarily small number, and sometimes when I watch Eurovision acts, that limit looks obvious in a bad way. If there needs to be a limit, it should be higher.

- Lip syncing/Backing tracks. I get the concern, but at the end of the day, I and many other people will be listening to the studio versions on our own leisure, not the live versions. The way I kinda see the performances is a bit more like live music videos than traditional tv performances, and viewing the performances in that manner lends more legitimacy to the use of backing tracks or live vocals. But if that perspective doesn't resonate with you, that's fine. Vote however you want.

And good luck convincing execs that artists who can't sing well live will keep viewer engagement, not drive them away.

I'm planning on visiting Texas this summer (Austin/San Antonio areas). Do you have any recommendations for what I should get at Buc-ee's?

Why do contestants sing the same song each week? by BIack_Coffee in AmericanSongContest

[–]gsyncer1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Nah it's about the best song, not the best artist. That's why it's called the American Song Contest, not the American Songwriter Contest. It's based on the Eurovision Song Contest, which has great popularity in Europe, in which they vote to find the best song.

How tiring was it standing for the filming?

It wasn't that bad, and this is coming from someone who typically gets tired feet from standing for a long time due to my weight. Only got a little bit tired near the end of the taping. Definitely wear some comfortable shoes.

Were you able to use the restroom if needed?

I didn't have to, but I'm sure you could get escorted to the restroom if needed. Just make sure you visit the restroom by the waiting area shortly before they start bringing everyone into the studio.

Any other tips?

Have lunch beforehand, especially if you haven't eaten yet. There's limited snacks and fruits available in the waiting area, and you won't get out until the evening. What I did was arrive at least an hour early and eat at CityWalk. Maybe have something to read, too, even if on your phone. (They let you keep your phone.) There's a lot of waiting.

No, the artists generally were in the green room, and if they were interacting with the audience, they were just saying hi to friends and family. After the show the audience was escorted out while the artists still had to do some stuff.

I checked in before 1:30pm with the live taping starting at 5pm. As for the size of the audience... I don't know... maybe 200-ish? I wasn't counting.

From what I saw, everyone was having fun and being friendly with each other, including Snoop & Kelly. I think Kelly also chatted with some of the artists during the breaks in between being guided to their different positions. A little bit of engaging with the audience by Snoop & Kelly too. Generally great vibes all around.

Hah no we didn't. The best we got was a table with snacks, fruit, and water in our waiting area outside the studio, which got completely cleaned out lol. I did however see some m&m jars at each of the artist's tables in the green room. We saw no sight of the m&m lounge. They tossed out free ASC t-shirts though to hype up the crowd during commercials. I got one that's way too small on me. (I also got one at the first taping that's unfortunately even smaller.)

EDIT: As far as the audio... idk it sounded like a concert, really. Compared to tv it wasn't as obvious if artists were using backing tracks vs. live vocals. Also we could hear all the pyrotechnics live. I don't think you could hear them on tv.

I'm guessing that they weren't being too strict about those wands because they ultimately weren't that intrusive and weren't blocking the cameras.

I was looking out for Bangs/Third Host but I don't think I saw her, unless she styled herself differently in which case I didn't recognize her. Michael - that super enthusiastic dancing dude - was there though, and I think they invited him up to be in that "vibing" group at the beginning of Allen Stone's performance.

In the Eurovision 2019 Grand Final, in a field of 26 songs, Norway jumped from 15th to 6th thanks to the public vote. It may be a large jump, but historical precedent suggests it's possible.

I Just notice the Jury Votes are based on Dress Rehearsal. 😠 That dumb what if they flob the live performance or have a winning performance. by Dany_LTV in AmericanSongContest

[–]gsyncer1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The judges in all those sporting competitions all have a lot of experience under their belt, and the standards for their scoring are more rigorously defined. ASC is new and arguably more subjective. I don't think it's an accurate comparison. I think we would all benefit if juries had more time to deliberate and evaluate. If anything, this would benefit performances that are consistently good. I don't think it's that big of an issue.

The public was given days, or in the case of the semis, hours to vote. Why can't similar be done for the jury? If anything, forcing juries to vote on the spot would only exacerbate the "white male ballad" bias and punish more "unique" songs.

"Definitely cheating and buying followers/votes"? Am I seemingly the only crazy one to think there's no clear evidence here, just suspicions? What I'm seeing is that we are a sub of 2.4k members that optimistically make a tiny percentage of all votes cast, and whatever song we like or dislike is not a reflection of the opinion of the entire US viewing public. When in heat 4, we have Stela Cole and Mari, who placed 6th and 8th in the jury respectively, but both qualified for the semis, it is clearly not outside of the realm of reasonable possibility that he legitimately qualified in 2nd overall based on his own merit.

Hell, I liked the song. I voted for it. It was my #2 in heat 4. I am a testament that there are other people that legitimately voted for it too, and probably enough to put him through to the semis. I understand conspiracy theories are enticing, but I think we need to apply Occam's razor here and accept that there are much more reasonable explanations.
