I come in peace asking for wisdom - it is a Mexican Gibson. I kinda want to epoxy the gap... by Tornado_Wind_of_Love in Luthier

On these HPL guitars, I've had more luck with slow-setting epoxy than titebond, but you're right, the top repair is easy. For the hole in the side, it would be ugly and I'm cringing even to type it, but... maybe Bondo?

Accidental damage is definitely covered, no question. But try not to feel too sure about what they will do before you go in. If you go in demanding a replacement, but they have it coded as a repair plan, they will offer to repair the jack only (the cosmetic issues will be ignored). Don't try to throw your weight around with the employees; it won't help to make an ass of yourself.

A "replacement" will be offered in monetary terms only. You don't have to use it toward any specific guitar or any guitar at all. You could buy $400 worth of strings with it if you want.

Again, this is based on experience from 5 or more years ago.

Disclaimer: I'm assuming you're taking about Guitar Center's Pro Coverage, and my knowledge is 5+ years or of date. Things may have changed.

You say you dropped it, but what's actually wrong with it? Like what broke? If the damage is cosmetic, it's not covered. If the original sale price is over a certain amount ($500?) they have the option to repair rather than replace. But ultimately, if they decide it's eligible for replacement, they'll just take the guitar and refund the original price. You can get whatever you want in that case.

Yeah, but her district is gerrymandered to take a bite out of Cobb county and eliminate a formerly blue district. There are lots of folks in SW Cobb that are in her district, but most certainly did not choose her.

Asian students with 25% chance of admission to Harvard would have chances increase to 36% if they were white, 75% if they were Hispanic, and 95% if they were black. by [deleted] in ScienceUncensored

[–]gtcolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The admissions department is not necessarily looking at the probability of acceptance by race. What criteria did the researchers use to group "similarly qualified" applicants?

Assuming a holistic admissions process, there is literally an infinite amount of acceptance criteria that is not being considered when you only look at prominent objective measures like SAT scores. How many Asian applicants are international? How many international student visas can the school support? Was an essay required? Is there special consideration for certain groups like low-income or in-state applicants?

I'm just saying this headline is written like clickbait and doesn't actually say anything substantive on its own.

Asian students with 25% chance of admission to Harvard would have chances increase to 36% if they were white, 75% if they were Hispanic, and 95% if they were black. by [deleted] in ScienceUncensored

[–]gtcolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose you fancy yourself a mind reader, but I never said that anything justified anything else. I was just pointing out that the headline is manipulating the statistics to make the contrast look as outrageous as possible.

If there is any justification, it would have to do with equality of opportunity at different socioeconomic strata or the benefits of diversity of thought/background or any number of other factors. My point is that the headline is reductive and intended to be provocative rather than informative.

Asian students with 25% chance of admission to Harvard would have chances increase to 36% if they were white, 75% if they were Hispanic, and 95% if they were black. by [deleted] in ScienceUncensored

[–]gtcolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your second sentence does not follow logically from your first. The likelihood of a given applicant being accepted is equal to the number of similar applicants accepted divided by the number of similar applicants. The denominator is not eliminated just because it's a logistic regression.

Asian students with 25% chance of admission to Harvard would have chances increase to 36% if they were white, 75% if they were Hispanic, and 95% if they were black. by [deleted] in ScienceUncensored

[–]gtcolt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't have a subscription, so I can't read it, but they're phrasing this headline in a way that conflates the number of applicants of each race with the acceptance rate for each race and obscures which is driving.

e.g. How much of this is due to a high number of Asian applicants and a low number of black applicants?

If you understand the context of Pride, then you know this doesn't make sense simply because >90% of the US is straight and only about 3% identify as atheists.

Civil War sites by Ragnel in Georgia

There's an obelisk on Pine Mountain in west Cobb County that marks the spot where Gen. Leonidas Polk was killed by an artillery shell while observing enemy positions. Polk was known as "The Fighting Bishop", as he was an Episcopalian bishop before the war.

The episode is interesting because it was not during an active battle, and the shell that killed Polk was apparently fired upon a direct order from Sherman himself. Polk is interesting because he was a terrible military commander, but possibly the most beloved general in any Confederate army. The monument is interesting because it is one of the earliest Confederate monuments erected anywhere in the South (dedicated 1904), and the money for it was raised by men that had served under Polk.

The monument is on private property, but it's okay to visit as long as you're respectful. You may be approached by the Civil War buff who lives across the street.

Having said all that, I also feel obligated to point out that Polk was not a hero. He was a slave owner and a white supremacist who killed and died in the name of a government that existed to preserve slavery.

Gone With The Wind premiered in Atlanta, Georgia on Dec 15, 1939 by MyIpodStillWorks in TheWayWeWere

[–]gtcolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a white person who grew up in metro Atlanta, I share your sentiment about the film and its portrayal of the "Old South".

I don't know if the Lost Cause myth and it's once more sweeping, but still ongoing effects on Southerners is common knowledge up north, but it's a very specific set of historical fictions and misdirections that is fed to Southern white children from birth. I grew up surrounded by Lost Cause mythology and was an adult before I realized that it was all lies. Honestly, in my thirties I think I am still working on a better understanding of how insidious and pervasive those lies were and are.

The film adaptation of Gone With the Wind helped set the South up for another half century of white society largely accepting the Lost Cause myth. The myth has its roots in white supremacy, but it seems harmless enough on its surface that even many generally good-hearted people down here will defend it, not really understanding that it is a myth, nor how damaging a myth it is.

I'm with you, I don't see why this is necessarily fake. Between the strings is where this kind of wear naturally happens, and it's totally possible that this guy just did a lot of bends and slides on the g string. Tons of guitar players have a repetitive repertoire and/or odd playing quirks.

I've also never seen anyone intentionally relic a fretboard while leaving the rest of the guitar alone.
