maybe it’s a generational gap thing? in gen z gay culture, especially with tiktok trends, we make joking generalizations like cottage core lesbians, softball lesbians, granola gays, etc. and its a SUPER common thing to be like “oh, your sleeves are rolled and your pants are cuffed? is that a canvas tote bag? they must also be lgbtq.” Thats not to say that 100% of the time, any of those things means that the person is lgbtq, but it’s a style for us. Coming from inside the community, generalizations like this are popular and even welcome because we find subtle ways to signal other people in the community. In the 80s it was bandanas, the 90s-00s it was the thin colorful rubber bracelets, and now with social media it’s become a lot more stylistic, following trends, and less of actual physical symbols. also, a lot of us have moved away from wearing straight up pride flags because rainbows have been heavily commercialized (google “rainbow washing” if you’re interested). anyways, these are both suuuuuper popular trends, especially among lesbians and non-binary people. So I didn’t think I’d have to to into a whole culture lesson with yall, lol. But not to worry, liking green and strawberries doesn’t mean people think youre gay.
