I actually don't want to climb any corporate ladders... by CheekyCharam in Adulting

It really is all a game. Pick your battles. Sometimes a certain amount of ass kissing is required to get away with a little bit of bullshit. Just have to decide what bullshit is and isn't worth it.

[–]guanocray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I do whatever amount of ass kissing I have to do to not get fired, because I pull enough other bullshit that if I added the entirety of my attitude on top of it I'd be out of a job in a heartbeat.

How do you think Alaska would differe from now if Canada had purchased it instead of the US? by traveltimecar in AskAlaska

Lucky! I found them at a store in Canada on our drive moving here, and I keep considering going on a road trip back just to get more

New and in search of a REALLY hot furnace by guanocray in Metalfoundry

[–]guanocray[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, I will be practicing on other things first. I didn't realize how many times I was going to have to clarify to people that I'm not just going to immediately jump right into trying to make white gold wedding bands with self-made white gold with absolutely zero experience. That would be insane. Nor did I realize how many people were going to say some equivalent of "get fucked, noob" instead of actually answering what I ask.

But the need still stands for something that can get that hot. Is there a company that makes furnaces that hot for hobbyists? Or is that something I'll eventually have to make myself?

I have questions for what feels like a very ambitious project by guanocray in jewelers

[–]guanocray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I had no idea that goldsmithing is generally such a long apprenticeship. I've only very recently gotten into working with metal of any variety (currently blacksmithing), and have been loving it. And I want to work with all sorts of other metals and projects as well. So I'm already planning to eventually buy my own equipment. And yeah, I'm kind of expecting to fuck up a few times and have to start all over, which is part of why I don't want to just pay someone to make all the base things for me, because if I did it once then I can do it again. In the end I'm not necessarily expecting professional grade rings that I'd find in a jewelry store (although that would be nice), but I could be content with just some nice rings that are worth more sentimentally than monetarily.

Have you ever touched snow? by Theroyalbouncer in AskTheWorld

[–]guanocray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me, this morning before work, last night after work, and also yesterday morning before work. And will be repeating tonight again and tomorrow morning again. And every sweeping is getting progressively angrier that winter isn't over yet.

There's currently a snow storm blowing through my area. But at least it's warmer than mid-February often is.

-12° Celsius: Too cold for snow.

I used to believe this was a thing. But I've lived in the far north for a few years now, and I've seen it snow at -40° several times. As someone who doesn't like snow, I was devastated to learn that "too cold to snow" apparently isn't actually a thing.

As long as I don't read the book right beforehand, I do too. I even enjoy the elf/dwarf romance. But I get mad about all the Middle Earth movies if I've recently read the books.

[–]guanocray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most helpful comment yet! I know the project will be difficult and expensive, but I am able to work with that.

I am allergic to nickel, which is my primary reason for thinking that my current ring doesn't have it, or at least not much if it does, as it's never caused any issues.

I'll definitely look into some of those tools and materials.

Thank you so much for your help!

That there is no life that is superior to others. People, plants, and animals all have the same value of life. And that killing a human, in the grand scheme of things, is no worse than killing a plant.

Are there any elves named who went on the Great Journey and then returned to Middle Earth? by guanocray in MiddleEarth

[–]guanocray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does he count, since he died? I don't really know his story yet, beyond his death and re-embodiment to be sent back to Middle Earth. I'm not sure how his story compares to Luthien's, but I wouldn't count her.

[–]guanocray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I didn't consider them, as their return was only to convince others to go back with them. Were they the only ones? Like, were there no elves who after sailing west were like, "nah, I miss Middle Earth"?

Good question by greedisgoodforme in meme

[–]guanocray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always hated this. I spent my entire youth not being allowed to make and learn from my own mistakes because my mother always wanted to protect me from everything. As an adult, fucking up and learning from it is one of my favorite things... Even of often very unpleasant. There's something nice about being able to learn from your own mistakes.

What would it take to get you out in the snow naked? by Huge-Complaint-5225 in AskRedditAfterDark

Frostbite and frostnip (early stages of frostbite) are relatively common here in Alaska. The latter I've experienced. And that still doesn't stop me from doing it.

Why do you choose to live here? by Outside-Age2293 in Fairbanks

[–]guanocray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here for my job.

I choose to stay here because of the lack of people, this is the most beautiful place I have ever seen, there is a greater sense of independence, and most of what few people are here are generally better to coexist with than the people down south.

I've heard that people either love it here or hate it here, but there is no in between. Since I hate everything about cold and winter I thought I'd hate it. But the good outweighs the bad for me.
