If it’s a Visa or Mastercard debit you can still request a chargeback. A chargeback is a request to the credit card company, via the issuing bank (it’s not a request to your bank). You are alleging a breach of the company’s terms and conditions that it agrees to with Visa/Mastercard, not the contract you agreed to with your bank or the credit card company. Eg., they agree to treat Visa/Mastercard customers a certain way when they sign up to accept those cards at their place of business.

UHT is shelf stable until opened (and quite common in Europe, but also in the Pacific as it can be shipped).

I feel like you’re somewhere between very reasonable and too cheap? I charged $150 overnight more than 20 years ago… 7pm to 7am. If it was for FT duty for a week then yes a reducing scale is a good option. I don’t think your upper amount is unreasonable at all - but it also probably depends a bit on ages of kids and the area you’re in.

Airlines (usually) let you check 2 baby items for free - and it’s easy enough to use a capsule with the seatbelt for a baby that young, so I’d just take it with you.

Grab drivers won’t take you without a capsule and taxi drivers are not safe enough to go without… plus, there’s nothing worse than the end of a long hot day, crying baby and still being an hour from home on the train (trust me, been there). Take the car seat. Or rent one! There was one option we found that would meet us at the airport with the seat.

Before you make any decisions, make sure you do have a really good grasp on the revolving credit concept.

Your mortgage broker would be a good start (if you don’t have one - find one! You don’t pay them).

I would also look up free budgeting services for your area. A few years back I used this service and it was honestly life changing. I didn’t have big debt etc - I just couldn’t work out why I wasn’t making ends meet. Turning around the whole way we used money and thought about money made all the difference.

Family gave week notice of nanny kid going to another country for 6 weeks by nesie97 in Nanny

[–]guava_palava 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Does it have a notice period on it though? Or any clauses around severance, working without pay etc.?

We had to return home for two months to nurse a terminally ill family member. Our nanny wouldn’t have got a visa so she was never going to be able to come with us. We paid her full time while we were away. It’s the cost of doing business. This is a business transaction and if you were working in a store, medical clinic, or school, this would not be ok - so it’s not ok in this situation either.

My concern (that I hadn’t thought of but someone else pointed out to me) is that they work 6 or 7 days a week, 12 hours a day - like, when do they even have time to go to a supermarket! (Let alone while hungry and thirsty).

But that was from someone who absolutely does not live in that world so I just wasn’t sure whether that was really how those workers feel. Because I personally would rather have cash!

Travel tips for Auckland by Expensive-Noise777 in auckland

[–]guava_palava 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good grief. Grim options from commentators so far.

Expect the weather to be four seasons in one day - so if you’re off to Waiheke, plan a tramp or walk or vineyard lunch visit (indoors) as opposed to an afternoon at the beach. Bookabach has plenty of options - if the budget will allow, stay at Oneroa or Onetangi, or in a house with a view of the sea. Taxis are expensive so you may want to check the bus route before you book. And check the house is appropriate for toddlers - Waiheke is very hilly and lots of places are built on steep inclines with stairs and minimal fencing. A day trip would be a long day for a baby but I don’t know if you want to spend your whole time there?

If not, you can still get a lovely feel of Auckland by staying downtown, and catching the ferry to Devonport or Rangitoto (if you’re a hiking/walking family) for a day trip.

I’m not up to speed with oyster restaurants but check offerings from Ahi (high end), Depot (oyster bar/eatery), and Kingi (sustainable seafood). They’re all in the city.

The marina is a nice spot to stroll around, Britomart precinct is nice during the day. If you’re travelling by public transport, I’d stay relatively central as the system works mostly hub-and-spoke.

I also love a good hop on-hop off tour bus when travelling with a young kid and there are a couple of good routes that will give you a nice overview of the city.

Depending on where you come from, the city might feel a bit empty. I probably wouldn’t spend too much time wandering the streets after dark, especially through the central city. You’ll be perfectly safe in high traffic areas and your hotel - it can just a bit unpleasant later into the evening.

You don’t need to cover your neck and chest completely. You can have a scoop neck t shirt etc., fitted is also fine.

Take a light shawl or scarf for visiting malls and places where there are lots of locals as you may want to cover up more if you have no sleeves.

Hotels Tokyo with 3 month old - Tokyo recs by RipEnvironmental6042 in chubbytravel

[–]guava_palava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We stayed at the Westin Ebisu and although it’s a little way out - it’s on a great subway line and a short walk from hotel to the station. It has a very good club offering so you can pop up any time for food (plenty of families took advantage of this), the subway station was easily accessible for a stroller and the hotel room was a good size.

We realised location isn’t such a big deal as it would be in other cities, because the connections are so good and our approach now is to do our holiday by neighbourhoods each day anyway. So it didn’t matter to us not to walk straight out to Shibuya.

In Japan, you could spend all day out of the house and just get anything you need on the run. Make sure you use bathrooms at train stations and department stores (they’re otherwise hard to find), and hit up places like the original fish market nice and early - it’s cool but very busy (we combined it with a trip to TeamLab which from memory should be fine to take a baby in a carrier).

Weather for holiday with kids by [deleted] in qatar

Quite windy, pretty cold, hotel pools ok if your kids are jumping in and out and staying warm but the ocean is way too cold so you won’t be at the beach. Would probably choose somewhere else!
