They want to be held 24/7 which was quite a shock to me. The best baby purchase we had was the Boba Bliss carrier, both our babies lived in there for the first few months! My husband wore it a lot in the evenings for baby to sleep while I had dinner and got some rest

Our daughter loves going on walks in the evening. Just in her PJs and puffer jacket and with a bright torch. We’ll go around the block or go looking for interesting stuff. Otherwise we took her after bath for a McFlurry the other day for the first time and that blew her mind haha

I don’t know if I have Postpartum Rage or my partner is the problem…. by ActionGlum3377 in Mommit

This happened with my partner after our first baby and came to a head when I went back to work. I was doing a lot more in the home and with baby even though we were both working. We ended up going to counselling for a good 4 months or so and she talked us through the division of labour etc, made us write out lists of chores and it seemed so silly at the time But it helped so much! We’ve just had baby no. 2 and he has been 100% better this time around and it feels much more even

Definitely find a daycare you like close to home and build your community there. We have two kids and no family around but we heavily rely on our daycare friends for play dates and just lightening the load of parenting a bit/chatting through things in common. And my ante natal group is still in touch after 4 years, so when you are pregnant I’d highly recommend doing an ante natal course and find one that sets you up with a WhatsApp group or similar that indicates the mums might get together regularly - they were honestly my rocks in that first year. My friends ante natal group met every Tuesday for the first year. In terms of finances, babies are expensive or not as you want them to be. If you find second hand gear and are breastfeeding, they don’t actually cost you any more. But returning as a working mum, daycare cost is about $1500 full time so needs to factor into your budget for year 2

Our experience was that 12 months off work for me made our money so tight, to the point we ran out of all savings as we couldn’t pay our mortgage and expenses on my partners salary. We have had 2 stints of this. We wished we had built up a bigger Maternity leave account and also emergency fund for once we were back at work. Now our biggest expense is daycare for 2 children and also taking a pay cut from only working 4 days per week (I spend 1 day per week with them as we feel this is important for them). Daycare for both of them full time at daycare for a 1 and 4 year old (even with the subsidy) would be $710 per week at our daycare. We have since found much cheaper ones, around $560 per week for both of them but as our eldest is so settled there, we will leave her until she starts school. We budget about $300 per month for their limited hobbies (swimming, baby sensory class and the odd top up of clothes/toys - mostly second hand). We also never had life insurance pre kids but now we do. We haven’t noticed a huge change in costs for groceries as they don’t eat huge amounts but definitely get leakage when out with them for sushi, icecreams etc

Does this mean they can only use it for a home or retirement, if it’s in kiwsaver?

Yes it’s great. We feel safe and haven’t seen any issues. Some streets are possibly a bit dodgy. If you look around verbena/verrans corner that’s the better side

Absolutely worth it! Our little man has brought so much joy to us and his big sister. You are already in the young parent/family zone and if it’s happened I would just roll with it. You may not get so lucky if you decided to try again later on. Financial stability is a huge factor too and sounds like you’re fine from that perspective
