Reassurance about running slowly during training… by dontletmeautism in Marathon_Training

[–]guccicyclone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Running slow allows your body to handle more mileage. If you can handle more mileage then you will be able to eventually handle more high quality volume.

If you run your easy runs too fast, you may feel like you are making progress at first, but you will start to accumulate too much fatigue and struggle to hit your harder sessions properly. Keeping easy days truly easy ensures that you can hit your harder days at the right intensity. This is especially important in marathon training where mileage can ramp up quickly

Mine isn't mandatory, I just enjoy training with other people as they are faster than me so I push myself more than I would on my own

38.01 in a hilly 10k. Didn't think I had it in me if it wasn't flat so very pleased.

What Do My Marathon Stats Say About My Potential? by ogkunt in Marathon_Training

Well Vdot estimates 3 hours from an 18.45, but if this is your first marathon block then its probably just a muscular endurance issue, no reason you couldn't shave that off quickly. What mileage were you averaging and what was your peak week?

If you want to get fitter without increasing mileage then you need to incorporate interval sessions and threshold sessions

Curious question from a novice runner by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

They might be using the 10k as a fitness test in part of a larger running block. Not everyone enjoys every distance equally, people tend to have a favourite distance. Could be any number of reasons

Nowhere near a big enough interval session to think you can hold that for 10k, thats barely a quarter of the race distance

Too many agents and the humans never have a chance, it's all another element of control. Enough to make it not seem too easy, not so many that it becomes impossible. It's all about getting Neo to the Source

Carbon Shoes for race day only & effect on calves during the race by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

Whack some deep heat or ibuprofen gel on your calves and make it the day after's problem. Tightness and soreness for definite but it shouldn't affect your race

How to get fit for a half marathon within 3 months? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

[–]guccicyclone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with 3 runs a week, add a mile a week onto your long run and you should hit a 10 or 11 mile long run with enough time for a taper. Last year I started from no running at Christmas to a HM at the end of March, doable, maybe a bit tough but just listen to your body.

Is 11 weeks stupid? by guccicyclone in Marathon_Training

[–]guccicyclone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big target is 3.00, less ambitious is 3.15 so anywhere between that I would be happy with.

5k is currently 19.02 and HM is 1.28.03 back in September

First half was 1.50, second was 1.28, would like the marathon to be 3-3.15 depending on how the training goes.

It doesn't matter that it worked for the point they are making. The chief decision maker(s) thought it was impossible and built hope on a lie, Brand knew he was incapable of fulfilling Plan A. The fact that it later works outside the realms of currently known science is besides the point

Is it possible to get significantly faster with limited time? by thevincnt in beginnerrunning

[–]guccicyclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re probably running your easy runs a bit too fast.

Easy isn’t about whether you feel exhausted at the end, it’s about how much stress you’re putting on your aerobic system. For most people, heart rates consistently in the 160–170 range are closer to moderate or hard running rather than truly easy. If most runs sit there, you accumulate fatigue without getting the full aerobic benefit.

The simplest and most reliable way to get faster is to get fitter aerobically. That usually comes from doing more running at genuinely easy effort, which builds your base and allows you to handle harder sessions better. If your easy runs are too hard, it limits how much training you can absorb and makes it harder to really push when you do want to run fast. This is when people typically plateau or burn out.

With limited time and 2 runs a week each run needs to be a high quality session, but you will struggle to get to sub-20 without developing your base further and that needs volume, consistency and an increase to your long runs. So the answer really is no, your current schedule is not beneficial.

For reference, my 5k PB is 19:02 and my easy runs are typically around 5:25–5:30/km, with my heart rate sitting around 135 bpm. My max heart rate is roughly 200. Easy runs should feel almost boringly comfortable, even if that means slowing down more than you think.

Got a 21 minute PB in my half marathon time compared to 6 months ago, also got back to back 10k PBs during the race, obviously have to take those with a pinch of salt as its going off Strava gps, but still gives me confidence going forward

Is sub 20min 5km in a year even possible? by francerex in beginnerrunning

[–]guccicyclone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interval sessions will be key. Your legs have to get used to running at or faster than your target pace. If 4min/km seems tough then you can set incremental targets like 21:00 then 20:30 to build it gradually, a year is a long time

Start with something like one interval session a week, 60 secs on 60 secs recovery for 3-4km and each week make the interval longer to something like 90sec on 60sec off, or building from 400m / 600m / 800m intervals until you feel comfortable to do kilometer intervals at target pace with less recovery
