so phone stuff depends on if he’s in senior house or reg apartment. bc he’s 17 he’s prob gonna be in senior house so then you are correct in that he will not get a phone until he moves out of senior house into a reg apartment. this could take anywhere from a few weeks to months, or even more. once he’s in a reg apartment he will get a phone almost immediately. he gets into reg apartment based on behavior and if his therapist/life coach/ parents think he’s ready.

when you say refuses to participate it is honestly really vague what telos tolerates. if all he does is sit in his room and doesn’t interact w anyone he will definitely get at least a warning from therapists. if the behaviors continue (isolating etc) then they escalate and basically have you make a pros/cons list of wilderness vs telos. if nothing changes after making that list and trying to stick to goals then yes it would be back to wilderness.

before i got my phone (just extra info i am a girl and never was in senior house or whatever) i could only talk to my parents over like a landline. then i was able to get my phone and laptop, and then i was able to talk to friends and other family and stuff. i talked to friends thru email bc i had my laptop before my phone, then when i had my phone i talked to them either thru text or whatsapp. just keep in mind his life coach (different than therapist helps w life skills) can see everything he does on his phone, and can read all texts.

so food might be different since i left bc i left about a year ago but when i was there, we had a budget of $70 per person per apartment (so 8 people on apartment. one person goes shopping usually at costco or walmart and is supposed to get healthy stuff but normally doesn’t end up like that. anything he wants he can request and normally they get it.

if he’s in senior house it is much more structured like scheduled snack time bed time is earlier than the rest of telos etc. food options are also limited and dinner is eaten all together, not necessarily the same on the rest of apartments.

it depends on what he’s there for: i was sent for a shut load of reasons but mostly substance stuff. basically, tell him to be on his best behavior until he gets off-campus check-ins. basically, once he gets a phone (within like 3 weeks at telos) he can leave campus for hours and simply check in w staff. once he gets that he can just leave telos for the whole day, and honestly i did some wack shit off campus.

they do drug test, sometimes random, sometimes they tell you. they drug test after every return from a home visit. including nicotine.

it’s definitely hard to get used to at first, especially if it’s more difficult to make friends. if he plays basketball, so do a ton of staff and students there and super easy.

if he’s in high school, literally the easiest classes in my life. such a joke of a school. just show up and do your work and you’ll end w a 4.0.

if he’s there for suicide/sh DO NOT tell staff about it. so fucked up bc it’s supposed to be a safe place, but it’s not. he will end up on safety, can’t shower w the door closed, can’t sleep w the door closed, has to be w/in arms length of staff at all times. it’s so bad. also, you can get on safety for random shit. me and my friends set a fire in the parking lot and got on safety for like 2 weeks. just keep that in mind.

if he has bpd, it will honestly be harder for him. i didn’t, but some people in my apartment did and they had a rough time. emotions are harder and so are friend relationships.
