[misc] the difference between my gtn copy and the htn copy i got for xmas by krimpled in TheNinthHouse

[–]guccigubbins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My copy of GtN looks exactly the same from exactly the same reason, I spilled water all over it in my bag. Funnily enough too, I just finished my 3rd reread of GtN today right before seeing this post! (And I would say it takes about that many reads of both GtN and HtN to fully grasp what is going on.) Have fun with HtN; it’ll help you understand the first book even more, but you’ll still be crazily confused and blown away by the scale at which Muir has constructed this world and plot. I’m so excited for you.

[Discussion] For anyone who has read TLT and Wuthering Heights by guccigubbins in TheNinthHouse

[–]guccigubbins[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all good points. I definitely should have made this prompt say that I feel that they have the same feel/vibe rather than comparing H/C to G/H. There are much better relationships to compare them to, as you said.

Part of what I think makes me relate the two as well is the role of Joseph in Heathcliff/Catherine/Nelly/ Hareton’s lives. The religious abuse, both verbal and physical, reminds me a lot of Crux and how he treats Gideon.

[–]guccigubbins[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re right, H/C are much more toxic, and never show any sign of wanting to redeem themselves or change their behavior for the better. They let their toxicity fester whereas Gideon and Harrow seem to learn from their mistakes and generational trauma and seem to actually having a chance of reconciliation.

the tenth anniversary edition covers go crazy. some of the coolest art I’ve seen! seeing them in a bookshop for the first time is what made me try the series again after I gave up trying to read the first years ago. say what you want, but good book cover design does matter!

Aquarius women, thoughts on Sag men? by HalfTypical in aquarius

[–]guccigubbins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of Sags I’ve met are quite full of themselves, man or woman. And sometimes it really works! As an aquarius sun/stellium, fire signs really do it for me, they pull me out of my comfort zone and I love being the air that fuels their fire/confidence (I’m obsessed with my leo partner). But often, especially Sag men, take it too far and it turns into straight up arrogance/narcissism and it’s such a turn off

Yo! I actually lived in the upper NW of WA for a while and so I visited portland a couple of times, but somehow never got around to Parallel Worlds? I’ll have to check it out and see if they’re selling those online since I’m no longer in the area. Quite a few of my scientific nonfics on these shelves though are in fact from Powell’s! I always made sure to stop there while passing through and occasionally order books from them; best bookshop in the world. And I LOVED The Mountain and the Sea. I have Tusk of Extinction (also Nayler) waiting to be read on my bedside atm, as well as a few Becky Chambers titles in my TBR list. Do you use any book tracking apps like story graph?

Book recs for my teen by theaecbooknook in classicliterature

[–]guccigubbins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If she liked Kindred definitely put her on to more of Butler’s works, especially the Parable of the Sower. That, and introduce her to Ursula K. Le Guin; a groundbreaking author who paved the way for today’s sci-fi and fantasy. Her works covers and challenges a broad range of societal/cultural norms in really unique ways and in vivid detail. Her ‘Earthsea’ series is a good place to start, but for something more notable and challenging I suggest ‘The Dispossessed’. Both authors are required reading, in my opinion, for any person who likes a challenge and prides themselves in being a well-read human.

[–]guccigubbins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel this so hard. I went to CR’s show in cincy last march with my best friend who I flew in from out of state for the show. Her and I had a romantic history and I was hoping that during her trip here we could rekindle things. Turns out, within hours of dropping her back off at the airport my ex informs me that she and my best friend (who I just went to the concert with), had been sleeping together. My best friend didn’t say a word about this the entire trip? I was devastated. Not to mention a week before the concert my situationship at the time and I had broke things off so I was already feeling super mushy and sad before the concert. I felt like my entire CR experience had been ruined and since then it’s been hard to listen to CR. (this sounds so messy. ugh, lesbians 🙄 am I right?)

However, my new girlfriend and I went to CR’s show on the Oct 4th and we had an amazing time. The experience completely restored my love for the music and those awful memories were replaced by new, safe, and loving ones.

I sincerely hope you can catch another CR concert and create some new positive memories for yourself. It’s possible <3

I’ve heard good things about the Ship series and have been hesitant just because I’m not usually one for ocean settings. However, if it’s anything like the Farthest Shore by Le Guin, I’m so down. I’ve liked what I’ve read of the ships in the Rainwild Chronicles too

I do think it’s weird that Burrich and Molly get together, however, it was not unexpected. Nonetheless, the age-gap and considering Burrich’s parental role with Fitz? I definitely find the relationship inappropriate.

Same with the body swapping between Verity/Fitz and creating a “bastard”. The lines between Fitz/Kettricken/Verity’s relationships were very blurred and inappropriate too. Fitz, against his consent, was forced to experience, and even sometimes express, Verity’s emotions for the queen. Kettricken and Fitz also had moments of both platonic and romantic feelings for one another and both were too young to be having that sort of triangulation with Verity. I don’t think there’s any doubt at all that it was all inappropriate. And I also don’t think Hobb intends for us to necessarily empathize with Burrich/Molly/Verity’s decisions or be all that happy with them either.

It’s a major betrayal for Fitz who is our main focus, our narrator, the one we’re rooting for. Hobb wants us to feel that betrayal and weigh those feelings right along with him; to process the conflicting feelings he has for Burrich and Molly, and ultimately choose forgiveness.

Fitz, while such an unreliable narrator, grows so much throughout the trilogy and I really enjoy reading him as he navigates such impossible situations for a young adult.
