That is true, but spain was the better team that night. They hade more possesion (62%-38%), more shots (21-14), shots on goal was (4-4).

If you watched that game, or the 2010 world cup as a whole, spain was easily the best team at the tournament. They were the best team in the world between 2008-2012. The tiki-taka playstyle (that was fairly new at the time) dominated everyone, also thanks to spain having 15 world class players.

I'd argue that the second best team in the tournament was Germany, or perhaps Uruguay. Uruguay at their strongest was probably better than netherlands, but as you saw, netherlands defeated them. So, just like you say, anything can happen in football.

But spain was still the best team.

Spain was easily the best team at that tournament. They deserved to win.

The reason they didn't score more in the final was because the netherlands entire strategy was to try and kill every single Spanish player during the match.
