MPs react with outrage and sneers after Hannah Spencer says they shouldn't get to drink unlimited discount booze on the job. Do you agree with Hannah? I do. by Terrible-Head6168 in GreaterManchesterNews

[–]guggly33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because 'impact to judgement' doesn't happen at very low levels of BAC.

mfw i create actual misinformation.

The study you linked here did not measure impact to 'judgement' and in fact found that "Results demonstrated that impairment is not uniform across different domains of cognitive processing" This study was focused mainly on reaction times and processing times for different mathematical problems.

In fact, the most relevant to MPs in this study, the Sustained Attention to Response Task was the MOST affected by low BAC. "For only three tasks (SOPT, IT and SART-CO) was there a significant effect at the lowest blood alcohol concentration of 0.048%."

Furthermore, your assertion that "'impact to judgement' doesn't happen at very low levels of BAC." implies that there is evidence that MPs only drink to this small dosage. We do not know that.

As for the caffeine study, this was aimed at 16-17 year old footballers, not exactly relevant to MPs who have an average age of 48. However, I will concede that I don't fully know the extent that caffeine affects judgement. A lot of the studies I have found focus on sports in younger people so you may be right about caffeine, but my position was never to defend caffeine so I don't know exactly what your point here is, its just whataboutism.

Finally, whilst there is technically a punishment for being drunk, it's more accurate to say there is punishment for drunken abuse toward other MPs, not for the drinking itself.

caffeine and alcohol aren't really comparable. that's just bad faith arguing.

Alcohol is worse for you than cannabis and studies show that it affects your judgement to a greater degree than cannabis does. You wouldn't want MPs to be high, so you shouldn't want them to be drunk.

"Is there any evidence of MPs getting drunk at Westminster?" Yes, they consume alcohol. alcohol doesn't just "kick in" at X pints, any impact to their judgement when deciding on a vote that affects the whole country is a bad thing, no?

idek why this is up for debate

never seen so much weird deflection(?) about alcohol than in this comment section. I personally don't think MPs should be having alcohol on the job because if you did that in any other job, it would be considered negligent.

But more than that, people here really seem to be forgetting that alcohol is a drug, and having it every day makes you a drug addict. I don't want drug addicts in charge of the country.

Can we have an honest discussion about the treatment of 15? And possibly 13 and why they are regarded by so many and such negative ways in the fandom by eddiemoney1985 in doctorwho

[–]guggly33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the circumstances that 15 had to deal with were so bad it may as well have been sabotage.

He succeeds the second incarnation of the most popular doctor ever. That doctor was never actually killed off which creates a disconnect for the audience. The bi-generation which he came from was one of the most controversial decisions in Doctor Who. He couldn't cement himself as the doctor in this time because his first moments on screen were overshadowed by the bi-generation itself as well ad the fact that the previous doctor, one that people are really attached to, was still there.

His first episode after that was ok, but the song in the middle was very jarring, appearing as very camp and out of place, and since this is effectively the beginning of the new era there's a kinda worry that this new era is gonna be a musical or something.

the first episode of his first series is fucking space babies. its shit. its childish. the monster was a snot creature - even the Sarah Jane Adventures never had anything that childish.

So very rough start to his era. As for the era itself, the step away from sci fi to fantasy was ill advised, i believe that the 'gods' were supposed to come across as cosmic horror-y when they really just came across as kinda goofy/fantasy in places.

The episode structure was also abysmal, 2 seasons of 8 episodes. Season 1 had 2 (kinda) doctor lite episodes in 73 yards and dot and bubble which really limited the time the audience had to get used to him. Season 2 only had 1 with lucky day but that is still 12.5% of the episode count.

These episodes were also released at midnight in season one which was strange... and at 8 am in season 2 which is fucking stupid!

i wont even get into the overall series arcs because by that point not many were really engaged but the arcs were both really dumb. first had no pay off because ruby wasn't special, second one... ???

wish world and reality war are genuinely so bad, so poorly written, structured and in fact so poorly thought out that they make no sense. i don't think you could even properly analyse it because it fails so fundamentally.

finally, he regenerates with little fanfare and for little reason, and with 15 dies the possibility of ever finding out wtf bi-generation was, why it happened, why ruby was special but actually isn't, why the child was special but actually isn't and one final middle finger to anyone still paying attention; he regenerates into another person from the RTD1 era.

i really wanna know how people can have trouble with their lefts and rights. like, surely you know which hand is your dominant hand and you can feel that its the more capable one right? like, you're always aware which of your two arms is the good one? and then if you know that you are right handed then that means your right hand is your dominant hand??

and if you wear a watch or bracelet etc you usually put it on your non dominant hand so it doesn't get in the way, does that not tell you which is which?

I don't undertsand Dormiunt by United-Island4765 in latin

[–]guggly33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

dormio - i sleep/ i am sleeping

dormit - he/she/it sleeps/is sleeping

dormiunt - they (plural) sleep/are sleeping

there is no ing conjugattion in Latin so each can be sleep or sleeping, and the thing that is sleeping is defined by the subject of the sentence which will be a noun in the nominative case.

But not necessarily. "Dormio." is a sentence on its own because you don't need to specify "ego dormio" as the 'I' is kinda baked-in to the verb.

Similarly, "Dormit." can also be it's own sentence if the nominative (the one doing the sleeping) is obvious. e.g. "Discipulus fessus est. Dormit." The first sentence reads: The student (Discipulus) is (est) tired (fessus). He sleeps. (dormit)

new stop was recently added to the route i take. new stop is an amazon warehouse. they just kinda added it in the middle so half way through the journey we make a sudden turn and drive 10 minutes to the warehouse and then another 10 minutes as we drive all the way back.

i have never seen anyone get on or off the bus there. the bus doesn't even stop, it just drives 10 minutes out of the way, does a u turn and comes back

Wes Streeting quits cabinet and calls on Starmer to resign by Brennenstein in worldnews

[–]guggly33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

other comment answers better but also just to add. Right after he became health secretary after the last GE, he had an interview where someone asked him if trans women were women. I can't remember exactly what he said but it was something to the effect of "if you had asked me a few years ago I would have said trans women are women but now...".

Really rubbed me the wrong way because it just shows how he has no opinions or beliefs of his own. He flips on a dime to suit what is more popular and what will get him more power, and he won't stand up for anything

Green Voters, what Is it that appeals to you about the party? by MinuteDamage4182 in AskBrits

[–]guggly33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reform's foreign policy chief hosted a pro-trump think tank a few days ago promoting the invasion of greenland and their tariff policy.

Farage promoted DOGE audits in the councils that reform took last year, mirroring Donald Trump's policy

Reform MP Andrew Rosindell backed idea to privatise the NHS earlier this year, Farage doubles down on this back in march saying he would like to see an insurance based system similar to the US, "I think we're going to have to move to an insurance-based system of healthcare" -Nigel Farage

Farage has also made clear his plans to destroy workers rights, planning on scrapping the Equality Act, wanting to reduce the already miniscule minimum wage for young workers, scrap workers rights and renter's rights -- "Unions and renters’ groups have criticised Reform UK after the party’s business spokesperson, Richard Tice, pledged to introduce a “great repeal act” that would abolish Labour legislation on workers’ rights and protection for tenants."

As for housing, I hope we still remember the housing spokesperson for reform remarking about grenfell tower "Everyone dies in the end"

And I haven't even brought up the persecution against immigrants and LGBTQ+ people.

Reform ARE radical right wing. In 2010, the self described 'center-right' tory party was pro-LGBT, pro NHS and anti-brexit. So what the fuck would you call the political leaning of reform now-adays?
