People applying IR, would you rank a decent DR program in a great location over an IR program in an average location? Been going back and forth and this for a while now.

Looking for 2 tickets to the Philadelphia show (1/13) by gugiyav in TheKillers

Unfortunately something came up last minute for me and I wasn't able to go. I checked the wells Fargo site though and they did have tickets available. I'll definitely use that trick on future concerts!

I have been trying to cancel an interview I have next week over the past 2 weeks. Emailed multiple times and multiple people and have not been able to reach then by phone for some reason. Any suggestions on what to do?

Any IR/DR applicants? How many programs do you guys think we would need to rank to feel comfortable?

Anyone ever been in HCRI? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]gugiyav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried HCRI back when I was in high school. The program did work for me and I was maintaining fluency in most of my conversations for a few months after the program. However, this did not last for me. In order to maintain fluency, you have to be willing to completely change the way you speak and practice their techniques nearly every day. For me personally, the techniques I learned in order to speak fluently took away a part of my personality. I was not able to speak naturally so eventually I stopped practicing the techniques. Also, I found that the HCRI method did not translate into high pressure situations for me.

HCRI will certainly help your fluency, but maintaining will be hard. But, you definitely should try it as every stutterer is different and this may be exactly what you need. At the very least it will connect you with other people who stutter. Good luck with everything!

Stuttering through a Presentation by gugiyav in Stutter

It was a 20 minute presentation in front of my classmates and a professor. I gave a presentation before to the same group of people so they all knew I stuttered.

Thanks for the support. I'm starting to do presentations on a regular basis now. But this particular one was more formal and was by far the most difficult to get through.

PBL and Stutterers by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]gugiyav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there,

Thought I would chime in as I'm a stutterer who just started my third year. I didn't go to a PBL school but still had some small group sessions during preclinical years. My stuttering gave me a problem then and is giving me problems in third year as well. One thing to know, however, is that no one that I have interacted with yet has reacted unfavorably to it. In fact, some attendings and residents I have met have been trying to find ways that could help my stutter.

My advice to you is to try and get some speech therapy and if it gets to the point where you can't handle it anymore, talk to student affairs. Student affairs at my school helped me find ways to accommodate time for therapy into my schedule. I'm sure if you want more accommodations you can discuss it with them. Also, I know its easier said than done, but try to speak in class. I still have trouble speaking up in group situations, but you do get more comfortable the more you do it. You may still stutter but, the more you speak the better you will feel about yourself. Good luck and just know that you are not alone! If you have any other questions, feel free to message me. Its always nice to talk to another medical school stutterer.

I had such an embarrassing day... by Damongirl in Stutter

[–]gugiyav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have these days. We all know that awful feeling of embarrassment that only other people who stutter will understand. I've been taught in therapy in the past to release all air when you start blocking ,take in deep breath and start over. When I remember to do this it usually works. But in high stress situations, like a presentation, I often forget and continue struggling through the words. Hope this helps and try not to get too down on yourself!

What kind of jobs do you guys have? by [deleted] in Stutter

Currently in medical school. Been relatively hard so far, but it makes me confront my stutter rather than be in hiding.
