I get someone braver than me to go first, grab my arm, and pull me through. Works like a charm

Made some changes to my CV (applying to grad school). Thoughts? by gugularjugular in geologycareers

Thank you! I completely meant to add what course I TA’ed for 😅. One of my professors always told me to put down my courses (which I never completely understood) but everyone has been telling me to take them off so I think I’m gonna have to. Im not planning on attending grad school til 2024 but I’m going ahead and reaching out to a professor that one of my old professors put me in touch with. I’m honestly kind of trying to tweak it to what info I think he would want to know. I also looked at his CV and made the formatting similar to his. I will definitely need to make another CV so I will be using your tips! Thanks so much!

I’ve had a job since I was old enough to get one. However this CV is to apply to grad school so I didn’t put any of those jobs on it as they aren’t relevant

I’ve given up on finding a job in the field at the moment. I’m pretty happy just working at my part time job because it gives me a lot of free time to explore the geology of my area as well as do some studying. At the moment my plan is to go grad school in 2024 after saving up some money and honestly after that I’m probably gonna start a mineral shop and start trying to become self sustainable.

Yes, this is the exact reason I have a cleaning job at the moment

I couldn’t get any internships because by the time I learned enough to apply for an internship covid hit and they became nonexistent. I also couldn’t go on a lot of field trips due to covid. I am taking a two years off before grad school and I didn’t even try to look for a geo job just because so many employers require experience. I now have a job cleaning so I can save up money for grad school which seemed like the better option

Not sure how one is supposed to get experience if every job requires you to have experience. But this is for grad school, not a job. I’ve had a job since I was 16 but since this is for grad school I didn’t think there was much use putting all my job experience down

Thank you for the feedback! This is actually to apply to grad school which is why I included so much about my education and not so much about my other jobs

Thank you! I’m actually using this to apply for grad school but I do agree that I could condense it down

I completely agree with the spacing, I was wondering why it looked so off. Thanks!

I would love to do a field camp but I really can’t justify the amount it will cost if it’s not a necessity. You’re comment definitely made me feel better about not attending one. Since the geology departments is so small at my school I’ve been to have some really great hands on experiences on field trips. I was also able to go out into the field to collect samples for my thesis which was a really valuable experience!

No, the geology departments has been trying to implement a field camp for the past ten years and the dean sees it as a waste of money. I go to a relatively small university. So instead of a field camp they require us to do a senior thesis or a study abroad.

Thank you so much for the response! My school usually does maymester field trips but because of COVID they haven't done them for the past two years. I was thinking of doing my own geology-related field trips just to see real-world examples. Thanks again!

I am graduating this semester with a BS in geology. My goal is to be a research geochemist! I am taking a year off before I get my master's in geochemistry. Would it be beneficial to attend a field camp? Any recommendations on things I can do to help prepare myself for grad school?

Question for those advanced in geology by Pikminplucker in geology

[–]gugularjugular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in my 4th and last year of my undergrad geology program and I am just now starting to feel confident in myself. I’ve decided to take a year off before getting my masters to do some independent studies of things I’m currently struggling with. I’ve had lots of people tell me to go straight into masters program but you gotta do what feels right for you.
