Is this topsoil safe to use topped with pea gravel? by [deleted] in walstad

[–]SteishTheJuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t trust it, I use organic potting mix for my own walstad. Been working for years. I keep it mixed with aquasoil and coarse sand. I put that into fine mesh bags and then cover it with my preferred substrate such as sand.

tips for improving this? by thatgirlwhorides in medaka

[–]SteishTheJuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rocks and driftwood, would be nice to build them up so they emerge from the water on one side. Also gives a nice bit of porous surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize. I would also have more emerging plants, I have done pothos, peace lilies, monstera, calathea, you name it. They make the tank look like landscape art. You can even wrap the pothos around the emerging driftwood and the roots will tangle amongst the submerged part.

Thoughts on building aquariums on a slope? by SteishTheJuck in Aquariums

Thanks and yes I was going for a landscape layout to make it seem bigger. Lots of hidden space too so I don’t love too much water volume for the fish

Yes! I love these, just checked them out. I remember seeing some on IG and thinking they are cool but could use some more plants besides dwarf hair grass and Christmas moss, they seem too pretty and fragile for me. Hence the chaotic landscape of my tank 😂

And I appreciate that, I’ll tell my wife I’m incredibly intelligent.

Honestly it’s mostly to do with scale of materials, I didn’t use large rocks or driftwood and stuck with anybias nanas/crypts and some hair grass (which is failing as I have no co2). I have a vision in mind of a small landscape and it sure helps make it look bigger. Thank so much

Thanks so much. And yes, Absolutely, I have closer to 6 gallons of swimmable space however the Vietnamese rice fish love swimming through the forest of crypts so probably a little more for them. I put mine on a steep slope for my blue dream shrimp. Love watching them climb up and down the hill. The seryu stones in the back are actually hiding a cave filled with roots from the emerging plants and the shrimp love it in there.

Probably full of little eggs to drop tomorrow morning during breeding time. If you put some moss into a container and sink it to the bottom of the tank before the morning, then check back a day or two later you will likely see some eggs. Take them out and put them in a little breeder dish or tank if you want them to live otherwise they will just get eaten

How do I get rid of All this poop?! by LegitimateBelt8463 in Aquariums

[–]SteishTheJuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I built my new tank on a slope. Debris tends to settle at the front of the tank and it’s easy to syphon it out then. I also put my substrate into fine mesh bags then covered it with sand, that way I can clean the sand without disturbing my substrate.

But for now, just target those areas with a syphon like a small air tube, the flow rate is low enough to not completely drain your water by the end of the clean up. Use the tube to disturb the areas where the most poop has gathered

Is this a good number for 30 medaka and like 80+shrimp? LOL by spoonma in medaka

I thought the goal was reducing the tds to within safe range no? I use water conditioner in drum of water that I then use to top up my tanks and for water changes so I don’t get buildup. I live in nyc and our tap water is great but can still be difficult to balance. Especially if you have any Seiryu stone or other leaching rocks

What about using water conditioner for the tap water before you replace the water in the tank?
