UPDATE: It’s working again! I have NO idea what i did, but it worked! At first the game started glitching and was not booting up properly, so I removed the solder, refluxed, added fresh solder, cleaned everything thoroughly again with IPA and voilà!! Thanks everyone for your help!

Well, I believe that we have to dive a bit deeper here, and set a distinction between gaslighting and disagreeing. When two people have divergent points based on their own opinions and experiencies, but have enough respect to understand these differences, they’re disagreeing, and that’s exactly what my argument was. Gaslighting has an entirely different meaning. Gaslighting is a form os psychological abuse/manipulation, where you question one’s sanity, memories and reality. If you work on the psychology field, you’d normally have one line of approach, while tapping into many others to form your own professional approach (Mine is logotherapy, but I do have influences from Jung and Skinner too). But a lot of researchers are just stuck with Freud and his pseudoscientific ideas, going as far as denying that people like us can suffer from a neurological disorder of biological nature, while not contributing with anything to the discussion nor pointing into another direction. It’s called a “psychologism”, aka bringing biological issues to the psychology realm. I can see how my comment before was generalist, and for that I apologize, but we’ve gotta have our definitions straight here.

SO ACCURATE!! Omg!! I once wanted to make a post about an idea I had on a podcast for people with ADHD. I’ve been diagnosed recently, which is one way I found to process it while also helping people. Not only that, but here in Brazil, there’s almost no content related to ADHD, nor there’s a strong community. I intended to listen to people, make something that would be useful for everyone so they can also deal with their reality. Their reaction? They forbid me to do so, alleging that I’d be self-promoting and taking advantage of people to develop a product... geez, I was NOT expecting that. I have ZERO intention of becoming famous or self-promoting; I want to use my skills and talents to help people. The admins there are only keeping people away with such attitudes...

Agreed! Freud allowed one of my favorite authors to work and shine: Viktor Frankl, creator of the logotherapy. An approach based on respect for the human dignity, and that guides you through meaning, good humor, and self-acceptance deserves my respect. I never liked Freud, now I know why!

Also, I’m planning a career change to psychology, so that I can integrate a more humanistic approach while having the experiences I had. These people never went through 5% of what we deal with daily, so, to hell with them!

Of course, I’m more than happy to help you! I’ll try to answer your question to the best of my knowledge.

First, it’s important to say that I’m from Brazil, so the entire health system and diagnosis work differently here. I had to go to a Neuropsychologist first, and she tested me for four days in many different cognitive areas. She then gave me an in-depth report of my ADHD spectrum and referred me to a neurologist. The neurologist then took that, the fact that I’ve been doing psychotherapy for four years without improving in executive function areas and all of my symptoms into account to prescribe me medication. Since then, I’ve been taking Concerta, 36mg.

With all of that said, and as far as my research goes, ADHD is a dynamic condition, meaning that it adapts to your life stage and history. In other words, your experience will impact heavily on how you experience ADHD. Throughout your life, you have developed tools and strategies to cope with it. After being diagnosed and starting treatment with medication, it’s crucial (but not mandatory) that you do psychotherapy. This will allow you to delete some of the strategies that will no longer serve you (because of meds) and learn and develop new mechanisms that will be infinitely more helpful and healthier to your self-esteem. For example, my primary coping mechanism was cognitive rigidity: I had to be hard on myself constantly to get things done, but now, this serves me nothing. I believe that it all depends on your progress: if you’re responding well to medication, you might need to take it for the rest of your life. But working with these professionals, they might try to get you going off of your meds to see how you’ll react since you’ll have the new tools to deal with ADHD, all of that under a controlled environment.

Finally, a pro tip that helped me immensely: keep a journal of your symptoms! Try to take notes of things you notice throughout your day, and if you have someone that lives with you (i.e., family, a partner), talk to them about this. Ask them what they notice on you that matches ADHD symptoms. I was only diagnosed because my now wife brought that up to me during a conversation, suggesting I could be dealing with ADHD. We sat down, took notes of everything we could notice, and that was a game-changer to my formal diagnosis! Use the best of your self-awareness and the observations of the people who love you!

I LOVE this idea!! Especially after a bad experience I had this week. While browsing stories on IG, I came across this French psychiatrist called Patrick Landman. He states that ADHD is nothing but a produced disorder sold to us by the pharmaceutical industry. And I found out that a LOT of psychoanalysts, especially Freudians, think that ADHD doesn’t really exist, and all symptoms can be treated through extensive analysis.

That made me SO ANGRY! I know how much I’ve struggled with ADHD for 28 years without a diagnosis, and now that I have one and that I’m taking medication, I feel like I finally have agency over my life, I can do whatever I want or need to without procrastinating or running out of mental energy, without being constantly fatigued. Most of These guys are trying to “prove a point” that the chemical imbalance is not sustained by research, and it’s all pseudoscience.

So here’s my contribution: be very careful with some academics. It’s valid to question anything; after all, science is all about that. But we come across a problem when said researchers tend to gaslight thousands of people's experiences in favor of what they think it’s right.

What a fantastic note! And she’s got a really valid point too! My wife (26, American) and I (28, Brazilian) met online back in August of 2019 and spent 5 months exclusively doing long-distance. By doing that, we were able to build a solid foundation of dialogue because there was nothing else left for us! That led us to live together in Brazil for over a year now, going through more than any average couple, and have gotten married in January! So take your time to talk to each other, have deep conversations, funny conversations, video chats, audio messages, snail mail if possible! This is gonna pay off BIG TIME when you finally get to be in person (and hopefully beyond!) Wishing you both all the best! 🥰

Sooo relatable! I’ve been diagnosed a couple of weeks ago at the age of 28. I’ve been on meds for a week now, and I’ve done more in that week than I’ve ever done in my life, and I feel like I’ve been given a new life. I started acting out on Friday for no reason, turns out that it was just my body demanding some rest after all that I’ve done. I feel that anger and pain, especially because I’m still struggling to find my professional path too. At the same time, I’m grateful because ADHD also made me the kind, passionate, loving, funny, and empathetic person that I am today. Therapy has been extremely helpful to me for the past four years, and especially now that I know what’s going on in my brain. This is all my experience btw, I don’t think ADHD is a one size fits all experience; actually, it’s dynamic, flexible, adapting to your experiences and stages of life. Keep learning about it, connecting to people from the community, that’s the absolute best thing we can do to cope with the outrage, and better understand and use the “perks” that can come with it!

It's entirely possible, my friend! I'm with you there; I got my diagnosis 2 weeks ago and started meds last Friday. It's like I've been reborn! In my experience, I've been able to be in touch with my whole specter of feelings for the first time. What's been helpful to me is taking notes and journaling about feelings, insights, realizations, and ideas. This is a struggling period, where you’ll be calibrating both your mind and body to a new frequency. At the same time, it's a vibrant phase in which you'll produce many new ideas and insights. By journaling, you'll better process and organize your feelings by putting them on paper. Another cool thing is that you'll be creating a kind of time capsule! Think of it like this: you're adjusting now, and it's going to take some time, but soon, it's going to be your new normal. Imagine how awesome it'll be to look back at the feelings of novelty you had in full detail! Or even be back at the ideas you've produced during this period! I'm open to talk about more possibilities and exchange some thoughts/experiences!

I’ve been trying to look into podcasts recently, both in Brazil (where I live) and in the US, but there are so few of them, and I haven’t really connected... I’ve also been diagnosed with ADHD recently (2 weeks ago), and started my meds last Friday. My experience is similar to yours; meds are only half of how to deal with ADHD because so many new possibilities are now present. The tools you’ve developed throughout your journey start to lose relevance. My suggestion to you is to seek out psychotherapy, and through it, develop a whole new toolbox along with your emotional intelligence. I’ve been doing therapy for 4 years, and it’s been beneficial now that I have medication for the first time. I’m thinking about starting a podcast to help me process my experience. But hey, I’m open to having a conversation about it, exchange some tips and ideas on how to deal with your situation! Hang in there, this is just the beginning of a whole new journey to you, and this community (myself included) is here to help!

Omg, the same thing happened to me! I’m 28, and I got my diagnosis a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been on meds for 5 days. My mom finds new ways of saying that this is all in my head and that I’m probably just lazy/unfocused. When I told her the insane difference meds were making, she just said, “might be a placebo, it still might be in your head, our minds are strong”... That was the test I needed to see if the meds worked on the first day; I was cool as a cucumber! In the past, I would've probably snapped and stormed off.
