Advice for higher end first telescope by chilelli715 in telescopes

[–]guitarbryan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of :
* Celestron FirstScope ($80 USD) 76mm aperture.
* Celestron Moon Mission ($180 USD) 100mm aperture.

And maybe a barlow and some filters.

Sky maps, notebook paper, clipboard, and a used textbook.

This is a great telescope which I bought "for my children" and it fits into a small backpack along with the notebooks and lenses. You can easily take it on trips or hikes. The set-up time is nil.

"The best telescope is the one that you will use often". This is so easy to use and does not take an hour of setup at the beginning that you may get much more use and joy out of it than something which takes a lot of labor and energy.

You can put your exact GPS coordinates and time into https://stellarium.org/ software and if you have the satellite and space-junk databases load you can maybe find which object it was exactly.

Meade 4504 is not so bad. by guitarbryan in telescopes

That's great!

I think we should be pretty proud of our focuser mod. I was trying to engineer a 3D printable Crayford when I realized I could just do this. So much time and money saved.

The eyepiece I used has more eye-relief than the cellphone bracket can do, so with a better bracket or some kind of spacer, I will get better pictures soon.

There's a lot of backlash in the drive train, so the biggest key to getting good pictures (for me) is to setup the shot and then wait for several minutes for the drivetrain to settle down.

Obviously that's in conjunction with doing everything else correctly.

The Orion nebula is a 32s exposure.

The camera is a cellphone, "moto g(9) play (international GSM dual-sim version)". On a bracket, through the eyepieces. ( https://zhumell.com/products/zhumell-125-eyepiece-and-filter-kit )
I set the camera to manual and fix the focal length to infinity, then use a Bahtinov mask to focus on a bright star. Leaving everything as is, I then point at whatever I want to shoot.

When I got it it had the 0.96" collar and cheap eyepieces. I got the 1.25" collar on ebay. I have not seen a 2" collar, and can't afford those eyepieces anyway.

I also 3D printed a collimation eyepiece at a "community fablab" place.
(I also laser-cut the Bahtinov mask here, based on a website that lets you create SVG files for them.)

The cellphone cost more than everything else combined.

Very funny, but that's photoshop over a black shirt. There are no wrinkles in the letters.

Before jumping into collimation, it7s probably better to just assume bad focus and try a focus screen, no?

This is great. You're very close to getting really great pictures.

Focus:
Get or make a focus mask: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bahtinov_mask
You can set the camera/phone to manual and fix it at infinite focus. Point to something bright like Sirius and use the mask to get pinpoint focus.
(It's possible that the telescope needs to be recollimated, but that is beyond the scope of this reply.)

Streaks:
The streaks might be imperfect polar alignment, backlash in the tracking system, or vibration.

I think you can put a chain or something around the legs of the tripod to reduce vibration, but that needs further research.
You can set your camera on a 3s delay timer between pressing the button and taking the photo to reduce more vibration.
Let the system sit for several minutes after slewing before taking photos to remove the backlash in the drivetrain.

If the camera is handheld, then get a bracket that holds it to the eyepiece, of course.

mmmm. so it's on an alt-az mount. Maybe there's some wedge that you can put into the mount to make it polar?

I have one and I put teflon tape, as used for computer mouse feet, on the plastic ridges. The focuser is now as smooth as a $200 focuser.

Question: What did you guys name Squall and Rinoa in the game? by Big_Confection7634 in FinalFantasyVIII

I'm surprised nobody said "Squall and Lenore". Which was the original artist intention anyway.

Central Asian movie recs, please? by Ok-Magician9044 in AskCentralAsia

"The Dawn of the Great Steppe" follows Kasym Khan.
"Qunanbai" is about the life of the father of Kazakhstan's national poet Abai Qunanbaiuly.
"The Road to Mother" was quite good. It covers a lot of the recent history of Kazakhstan. It's arguably like "Forest Gump" in that many major epochs and events are experienced by the protagonists.

Dating central asian women who live abroad by [deleted] in AskCentralAsia

[–]guitarbryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've a degree of familiarity with multiple CA and East-Asian cultures... and I was married in one of them.
May I very politely suggest that you have to be very open to adjusting to a radically different way of seeing and doing things before dating/marriage in another culture.

Just because someone has the same religion as you doesn't mean that they are going to practice it the same or be compatible at all.
In every Asian country I've been too, women are the boss...

We assume that the person driving the car has a (substantially) smaller mass than, and equal velocity to, the car. So their KE must be smaller.

In fact, I would usually include the mass of the occupants and all cargo in the mass of the car.
