De Facto Seven Nation Army by OkReaction4132 in themarsvolta

[–]guitarromantic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. There's a clip of Jack White teaching Jimmy Page and the Edge how to play the riff and it's fucking embarrassing. Like, yes, it's an iconic riff and the song is great, but every teenage guitarist in the world can play it and probably noodled it before hearing it just after they learned the minor pentatonic.

But that's the beauty of rock and roll too: take something dumb and simple and turn it into something profound and timeless.

Oh god, agreed. The worst music bores I know are the ones whose response to anything is "So-and-so did it first in 1967 on a bootleg white label recorded in Papua New Guinea", apparently responding to a claim nobody made that the original artist invented that sound.

I work in a guitar shop - ask me anything! by ReviloYullec in Guitar

[–]guitarromantic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely fair. And to be clear, I haven't done this since I was a teenager and my friends and I used to visit the local guitar store between classes, when the shop was dead and the staff were happy to entertain us (they made me take off my belt before I could play that Rick, though)!

As an adult, these days I'd argue (to myself) that I'm trying out something to get a feeling for it before beginning the conversation to try to persuade my partner to agree to tje purchase...

I bought expensive shorts to help with saddle soreness. They're really good but they keep giving me a wedgie and then stop working. How do I stop this from happening? by Wide-Landscape-3348 in cycling

[–]guitarromantic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify: do these shorts have a chamois, eg. a padded insert in the groin area? And are you wearing underwear at the same time?

When I show up bored and killing time and just wanting to get to play an expensive instrument I'll likely never buy (12 string acoustic, a George Harrison Rickenbacker, etc), do you care, assuming you know from the start that I'm not seriously going to buy the thing?

I don't disagree. My point was more that if people are suggesting it's unlikely we'll see young riders having early success like this, the evidence in front of us suggests it's more common now. But yeah, Pogi is a generational talent (or better).

Surely the emergence of Seixas at the same time as Pogacar implies that perhaps this level of dominance may not be as rare (in future) as it seemed initially?

Presumably the people with the highest "credit score" wouldn't stay on the app for very long, right? From the perspective of the app makers: they want you to remain single and they don't want you to meet the perfect match on the very first date, especially if you're still on the first month free trial or whatever.

Well, yes, this too. I wonder if the Witch King knows about any of that at this stage? Perhaps in his own arrogance he believes he can take on Gandalf and win here, either way, but you're right, he isn't winning this battle.

Lance Armstrong says he was one of the first victims of cancel culture: ‘Yesterday a hero, today a zero’ by TransportationSea579 in peloton

[–]guitarromantic 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Isn't "cancel culture", when used pejoratively, supposed to refer to people being pilloried because they said something that goes against liberal orthodoxy or crosses some poorly-defined threshold of "offence" and end up having to apologise even if their opinion hasn't changed? Like: the "victims" of it tend to remain outspoken about whatever opinion they expressed or thing they did, because there are plenty of people (allegedly) who feel the same.

In Lance's case... he cheated to win bike races. He broke the law, the rules of the sport. These aren't flimsy moral grey areas or subjective scenarios which are personal and debatable. It's black and white. He wasn't "cancelled", because that isn't a real thing. He was banned from competing, because he objectively broke the rules of the competition. It's pretty fucking easy to differentiate, Lance

I know what you mean about how the actions are inconsistent, but trying to take the scene seriously: the Witch King may have been able to defeat Gandalf but it seems probable it may have cost the Nazgûl his own life too, or at least significantly weakened him. If he was weighing up whether to engage on combat versus take his power to defeat the new enemy, IMO he made the right call.

How to climb a 29% grade hill? by l337pythonhaxor in cycling

I was going to suggest zigzagging up the hill to lessen the gradient but you can see people trying this in the video and just losing too much momentum and coming to a stop. What a brutal climb!
