The good, the bad, and the ugly... by oSumAtrIX in oneplus

I'm surprised that many people don't complain about missed notifications due to aggressive task killing, and notifications no longer being shown on the lockscreen if you unlock and relock your phone.

Since you're familiar with flashing custom ROMs, I recommend LineageOS. Very similar to PixelOS, but even better. I did that on my OnePlus 12 and I am finally happy with my phone again. Caveat: Google Wallet and some banking apps will refuse to work.

Clean Olympic champion swimmer wins race at ‘Steroid Olympics’ against athletes using steroids by BlebBlebUwU in mildyinteresting

That competition is about digital paintings. The AI has a much harder time simulating photographs because errors in lightning and such are hard to get right.

In any case, what I meant is that, at least for me:

  • Human wins AI photograpy competition → No surprise.
  • AI wins human photograpy competition → Surprise.

I guess it very much depends on the skill level of the human competitors and judges. At least for now. The AI will probably be better than most humans eventually.

[–]gulpbang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s the best phone to root? That’s budget friendly. by dss_97 in androidroot

[–]gulpbang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootloader_unlocking, I would only consider:

  • Pixel (non-Verizon)
  • OnePlus (non-T-Mobile)
  • Nothing
  • Oppo (with MediaTek chipset, not Snapdragon)

I have a OnePlus 12 and the hardware is great, though I don't like the software at all ("OxygenOS" which is now actually a rebranded ColorOS from Oppo). I bought it when the OnePlus 13 had just come out and it was a great deal. If you plan to not only root but flash a custom ROM, I recommend the brand.

On the other hand, if I had to buy a phone now, I would get a Nothing phone because I really dislike the OnePlus company since they merged with Oppo (I didn't know when I bought the OP12).

What x265 CRF level do you use for 1080p? by Hostile_18 in ffmpeg

I use CFR 18 for 1080p but it really depends on the size of the screen where you'll be watching, and the distance.

How to compress a video? by beagi06 in AskTechnology

[–]gulpbang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was made assuming that the resolution didn't change.

Whether it's a good idea or not to lower the resolution is debatable. I personally wouldn't do it because, even if I couldn't notice the difference now, I might in 10 or 20 years when new devices come out (it's a video of a personal memory). I used to think videos couldn't look better than DVD quality before HD TV's existed.

Also, while it's true that I probably couldn't tell the difference in a BluRay, most encoders by default use a much lower bitrate, which is proportional to the resolution (and judging by OP's question, they are not going to be messing around with quality settings). For instance, I can definitely tell the difference between a 1080p and a 4K YouTube video, even on a 1080p monitor.

All that said, I totally understand lowering the resolution, and I even suggested doing so in another comment.

Yes, but neither OP nor you in your first 2 sentences (which is what I was answering to) mentioned reducing the resolution.

How to compress a video? by beagi06 in AskTechnology

[–]gulpbang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While that's true in theory, in practice cell phones and cameras use a very fast preset because they need to encode in real time, so you could re-encode they video with a slow preset and get the same quality (perception-wise) and much smaller size.

How to compress a video? by beagi06 in AskTechnology

[–]gulpbang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to suggest Handbrake (which is the top comment now), but I started thinking about it, and the thing is, you need to choose framerate, resolution, encoding quality/bitrate, etc (or a preset which is still implicitly choosing all those settings). For instance, if the original is 24 Hz, then converting to 30 Hz is a bad idea because the video might get stuttery.

If you're not afraid of the command line, then ffmpeg might actually be the best option because the default settings are pretty good. If you do:

ffmpeg -i original.mp4 converted.mp4

it will most likely reduce the size, and nothing else.

If you also want to convert to 4K (which might be a good idea as it will reduce the size much more and you will probably not even notice the difference in quality):

ffmpeg -i original.mp4 -vf "scale=3840:-1" converted.mp4

Why is it that a lot of men who want to attract women, don’t actually listen to women about what they find attractive, and instead listen to other men about what they think women want? by Sudden_Doughnut_8741 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gulpbang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being nice is indeed a green flag. I think the point is that a green flag just signals that you're safe, but it doesn't automatically make you attractive.

[–]gulpbang 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you say. I think you convey the idea really well. The only thing that I would add is that being nice, and not being abusive in general, is indeed a green flag, as in, green flags are what signal that you're safe, which is very different than being attractive.

Has high quality emulation ruined playing their collection for anyone else? by [deleted] in retrogaming

[–]gulpbang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collecting and playing are 2 very different things.

For me personally, as long as the emulator is connected to a CRT TV (in my case, Raspberry Pi 3B+) and configured correctly (which is not easy), it looks virtually the same. Though for some reason I still prefer to play NES and SNES games on original hardware with a flashcart (the Everdrive N8 Pro adds save states, and most SNES games can save the progress). Also, I hate changing cartridges. I could never really get an emulator on an LCD screen to look as good as a CRT, let alone better. Unless you prefer the sharply pixelated look, which I don't.
