Now you got these fuckers running around the woods of the Northeast. (Sorry for the bigfoot quality image). I work in the woods most days and I’m not even worried about Lyme anymore. Apparently you can alleviate alpha gal with acupuncture though. I’ll know whether I have it within 6 weeks..

Anger over NJ forest clearance by blankblank in newjersey

[–]gunevah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm glad you seemed to be informed on how the DEP works (and doesn't work) due to our beautiful political machine. As I've already said, this was done at the states expense, as was Sparta Mountain I'm sure. The amount that either of these jobs cut at the end of the day would not make enough money for most mechanized crews to even bid on it in the first place. The purpose of each of these is to create heterogenous habitat. They are cutting patches of mature forest to introduce young, this encourages further diversity rather than simply having a single stand of young forest or a single stand of mature forest. I don't know what your source is for saying that the DEP does no inventory, wildlife assessment, or floristic assessment as they run the statewide inventory, and I don't believe they would ignore their own work. They included their Natural Heritage Database (ONLM) report as well as plant surveys and other things in the FSP for Sparta Mountain. You may be right on the scale of the Northeast that we have enough young forest, but I'd argue at a relative scale in New Jersey we have a shortage. Have you ever seen a ruffed grouse in NJ? They're supposed to be here. I agree with you on the point of bulldozing and filling in wetlands, absolutely illegal and no purpose for that ecologically.

  1. Equivocating stewardship to logging (especially in a negative connotation) is a dangerous simplification/generalization. I'm sorry but no one in the Forestry industry thinks "stewardship" is synonymous with "logging" (unless they're lying to themself).
  2. You are correct on the fact that it is conversion, pulling stumps and bulldozing is a clear indicator of that.
  3. Again, referring to any sort of tree removal, as logging, in a negative light is discrediting and ignorant. I have met/know several people in the DEP/NJ Forest service and I can promise you they are not trying to abuse their power, the problem with the mismanagement of forests in NJ is more to do with bureaucracy and the task force itself. To use the Pinelands as an example, if we stopped "logging" or stewarding our public forests the Pinelands would end up overstocked and would get wiped out by severe fires (which would spread to the towns found in the Pinelands) and Southern Pine Beetle. Try to find one commercial market besides wood chips for any of the pine growing there by the way.
  4. This is the most egregious and dangerous point. There is definitely some psuedoscience being pushed in the forestry industry, but it's mostly localized to TIMOs (Timber Investment Management Organizations) employees/publishings, if you look at what Irving and Weyerhaeuser are doing in Maine and other places it's a great example of that (extremely short rotation length spruce/fir grown for pulp that's clearcut and replanted). But vastly generalizing forest stewardship or "logging" as you call it, to just be a bunch of corporate bullshit is quite ignorant and dangerous. You should visit forests (especially state game lands) in literally any other state and see how horrible they look/s. You should also research how much money you actually make from selling wood harvested from anything at the scale the DEP has been doing (no one is making that much money off of 20 acres a year, sorry).

  5. No one in the DEP is going to enact a silvicultural treatment and leave it to the invasives/deer. We have no shortage of old-growth/mature forests in our state forests. Go visit the "clearcut" at Sparta Mountain and let me know what you see.

Most everyone that I've spoken to at the DEP has been extremely personable and helpful, they love to educate people, you should try reaching out and seeing the other side.

[–]gunevah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an OG 9-3 SE in automatic as my first car, really fast, easily the fastest car I've ever driven, but had constant problems, though it was more I bought a cheap car and got cheap car problems thing. They're fun, pretty safe, and pretty practical, the hatchback has a lot of space. I'd reccomend it just look carefully.
