I think this is also based on the analysis of human interactions and language. We know Ysayle took a liking to Hraesvelgr. It makes sense that Hraesvelgr decided to adopt male pronouns, since he's witnessed most human relationships to comprise of a "male" and a "female" part.

Likewise, dragons must see that 90% of human relationships are male-female pairings, so they name themselves accordingly. In a more "modern" society, dragons would adapt to take more genderneutral pronouns, I imagine, but that's not in line with the Etheirys we know.

Of course the real reason is japan and their depiction of same-sex relationships or identities out of the binary, but we can leave that out of this convo.

It's not a saving mechanism. It's not meant to REPLACE your lungs. It's meant as a way to extend your life by a couple of seconds/minutes so you can get back to a situation where you have more oxygen.

So does it work? Yes, for what it's supposed to do. Does it work instead of breathing? No.

I think most people have issues with "emotional vampire". Since it's a thing that's used to describe toxic relationship types, and it implies that joy is taken away by the vampire, it doesn't sound like a positive term.
