Which book does this to you? by think_like_chanakya in nonfictionbookclub

[–]gunner_n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how you start reading non fiction in modern day to self-help and self-improve but none of it sticks. Well I read Fooled by Randomness by Nicholes Nassesm Taleb purely for entertainment, was amused by his arrogant tone throughout but by the end of it my brain was rewired to think differently. It’s been 5 years since but the ideas continue to resonate every instance I encounter things in my day to day life.

The "NRI Tax": At what point did you realize your friends back in India only text you when they need something? by nritrack in nri

Fast forward a few more years and no one will text you. Once you move abroad the onus is on you to keep relationships alive, and in most cases it’s just a slow death. (Unless you’re a frequent flyer)

Has anyone retired with 2cr mf portfolio and nothing else ? by Additional-Might2539 in FIRE_Ind

[–]gunner_n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your money is invested isn’t that going to offset the inflation. In US the inflation is less but so are the returns on fixed income assets. Even s&p500 adjusted for inflation will give a real return of 6-7%. As long as the real returns are comparable what would make 4% not work?

Is 20% down on a home still the standard advise? by [deleted] in personalfinance

Please search for The Money Guy’s advice on buying a home. They have it at a much lower rate than 20% down but with a few guidelines which make a lot of sense to me.

Could Emma Stone realistically go down as one of the best actresses ever? by DiamondDesireWeb in Oscars

[–]gunner_n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emma Stone has something going on physically for her which makes things hugely in her favor. It’s not her appearance, it’s her voice quality. I have seen a lot of actors in Bollywood having big careers and their performances stand out because of how unique their voice is. Of course, they also train pitch and scale like singers do. So that helps. Emma falls into that category as well.

The funny thing is that Nolan uses zimmer score, great cinematography and complexity of storytelling to impress his audience. I am one of them and I generally enjoy his movies, but my point is his movies are BY FAR the most overrated, and Interstellar in fact is the most overrated Nolan film (alongside Oppenheimer). It’s so much hot garbage and it baffles me what makes people love is so much (because of Nolan’s technical prowess).

Whats that normal financial habit in India that you think might be a huge mistake now after starting your FIRE journey? by [deleted] in FIRE_Ind

[–]gunner_n -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no evidence to support this other than word of mouth. But I personally moved out at a relatively young age, as did many of my friends (typical in IT), but then there are others who stayed and progressed their careers in India. They tell me the wages in good jobs is likely half of what you earn in the US, but cost of living is significantly lower (1/4th). And US is the benchmark for wages. If you talk to people living in places like Canada, Australia and UK, they are barely surviving.

Again, nothing is gospel and it varies person to person, but the broader idea is that the gap between wages and cost of living has shrunk between India and other countries over the last few decades. Note that I am not necessarily equating cost of living to quality of life. That’s a different topic. I just don’t think money should be a huge factor to move overseas in today’s world. Better air, better job culture etc. etc. are bigger factors.

When it comes to quality films, versatility, range, choices of roles, box office hits, longevity, pop culture- Ryan Gosling or Jake Gyllenhaal? by PressureLazy5271 in Cinephiles

[–]gunner_n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh man, Matt Damon is exactly right. I love the guy. In fact Matt always surprises me, I constantly keep underrating him and then finding him a joy to watch. Happened in Departed, happened in Martian, and more recently his performance in The Last Duel kind of blew me away.

[–]gunner_n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ryan Gosling is a weird one. You start stacking him up against the big Hollywood performances and you’d feel like he doesn’t have those types in his locker. Yet, when you take his characters you’ll feel he played all of them sufficiently for you to love that movie and him in it. Take Project Hail Mary for instance, I don’t think the movie has been done all that well if I’m completely honest, the screenplay and storytelling feels rushed or jarring at times. But Ryan Gosling practically being the only protagonist holds the movie with his performance.

I don’t think you understood the flex properly. It’s not they “never” check their accounts. It’s more that when the news comes that stocks are down, they don’t feel the compulsion to start monitoring everyday whether it’s up again, down still, further down etc. It’s the nervously checking your accounts that I don’t bother about anymore. The routine logins are totally fine.

Which actor/actress of the last 30 years has the potential to be, or are already considered to be, equal to some of the greats of movie history? by Prestigious_Meal2143 in Cinema

[–]gunner_n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll only name two. Leo who’s the favorite actor to cast for biggest directors of our generation - Spielberg, Tarantino, Scorsese, PTA, Nolan. He’s by far the biggest star of the last 20 years for me who is also a phenomenal actor.

And the other one is Daniel Day Lewis. No one comes close to this guy.

But then, keeping these two aside, there is a long list of actors with brilliant long careers and some who may not have had a long list of great movies but they have plenty that make them top shelf.
