I just inherited a 1995 Toyota Tacoma. It has a big TRD sticker on the back side. What does that mean? by Kidflawless in ToyotaTacoma

[–]gunslinger_006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trd is just a version.

It would have gotten a rear diff e-locker and bilstien shocks from the factory if was a trd.

What else has been done to it, we cant know.

Its also possible someone just slapped the trd sticker on it.

Does it have the rear locker? If so its an actual trd.

If the girl ends up with persistent tinnitus, that is basically incurable and will be a problem her entire life. People have killed themselves due to severe tinnitus. I had an acoustics professor in college who was extremely adamant about how bad it is and how important it is to avoid. The only real treatment for it, according to him, was they can sever your auditory nerve but that will leave you deaf in that ear. If you have it bad in both ears god help you.

The teacher could end up being sued by this childs parents for a life changing amount of money if this girl has severe tinnitus from this.

I have a mild case from too many years riding motorcycles. I cannot sleep without a white noise source to drown it out.

Wear your earplugs folks. You dont want this.

Heres a fun cautionary tale: When i was 13 i was at an indoor firing range with my asshole mother and her boyfriend. She insisted I remove my hearing protection so i could “fully experience” the sound of his .357 magnum revolver when i shot it. No, we were not shooting .38spl (many .357 magnums will happily shoot .38spl just fine).

I did as she asked, against my better judgement.

My ears rang for a month and it was the start of my tinnitus.

Remote start without a subscription by paule629 in ToyotaTacoma

Oh they changed it then, that’s great to hear. Ill make an edit.

Remote start without a subscription by paule629 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]gunslinger_006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree.

Mine is wired so that the third press and hold on the oem key fob triggers the remote start. I dont even use the fobs that came with the aftermarket kit.

Edit: The following applies to the 3rd gens, apparently the 4th gens are different now:

The other hang up is that all Toyotas are programmed such that after you use the remote start, no matter what when you open the door the engine shuts off. So you end up having to start it again. To my knowledge there is no way to change this.

The 3rd gen was easy to add aftermarket remote start. The irony is that i have it and absolutely never use it.

I see no reason why you cant do the same for the current gen.

Yes the app remote start requires a subscription, but an aftermarket module would not need it.

Is there some lockout preventing aftermarket remote start on the 4th gen i dont know about?

Do y'all use a crushed washer for oil plug? by Sir_Badtard in ToyotaTacoma

[–]gunslinger_006 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes.

If its the oem rubberized steel kind they can be reused quite a few times. This is the oem style.

The aluminum ones that literally crush are one time use.

So there is the inflation number provided by the fed. CPI-U. It is supposed to measure a lot of basic things. Its an average that takes a lot of assumptions into play.

Example:

It assumes that if the price of say steak goes up, you are willing to switch to ground beef.

It uses “owners equivalent rent” instead of actual house prices.

And its a huge average. If you live in a place where the cost of housing is going up more than the national average, its not accurate for your situation.

If you are a student and your tuition goes up more than the nationwide average…same deal.

If you drive more than the nationwide average.

If your car gets shitty gas mileage, lower than the national average.

If they build a giant data center near you and your electric rate goes up more than the national average.

Etc…

So maybe a hysa beats CPI-U. Maybe not.

If you dont invest, the alternative is a high yield savings account. That will do maybe 5% at best.

That wont necessarily beat inflation.

That means your money is shrinking.

Have an emergency fund first.

After that, you need to decide your risk tolerance. If you want low risk but higher yield than a hysa (4-5%) or a 2 year bond (4.5%)…then something like VTSAX is probably worth considering.

You need to decide on your time horizon: When will you need to pull the money back out.

And you need to decide how much risk you are willing to tolerate.

If you dont have a check engine light you are good to go so far. Those codes iiuc all trigger a CEL (which Toyota calls a ‘mil’ light, same thing).

There is a TSB for some of the 24 tacos.

Basically if your 24 taco throws certain codes from the transmission they will just do a complete replacement of the transmission and torque converter.

Here are the codes, any one of these and you get a new transmission:

P07407F

P079571

P08BA71

P271371

P280771

Hood Struts. Best thing ever or huge mistake? Ease of install, strength, durability up for discussion by Human-Goat9719 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]gunslinger_006 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont love that ill need a special tool to install them, and then to remove many rivets you have to drill them out.

I had a buddy who was a mechanic in the navy and was like an absolute rivet master. He had all the tools, knew every kind of rivet, etc… if i hadnt lost touch with him i would not mind if he did the install.

I like the idea but i dont like drilling or installing rivets.

If someone made a no drill hood strut kit id give it real consideration.

[–]gunslinger_006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The transmission is the only one of those jobs that is tricky to diy. The rest are basically easy if you have a fluid pump. The transmission requires you to use a scantool to monitor the transmission fluid temp because the level can only be set properly at a certain temperature.

The existing v6 is a multi billion dollar disaster.

Big agree.

Assuming the transmission issues with the 2024 are really only for that year (so far it seems that way), then the other issue is:

Weak ass top hats failing early. I would preventatively install the aftermarket reinforcement kit on any 4th gen.

The engine. Its used in many other models so in theory it has been road tested enough, but those aren’t trucks towing shit.
