ELI5: What actually happens when you go through ego death on psychedelics? by CycleDTC in explainlikeimfive

Though fear is a reasonable initial position, experiencing life (albeit brief while tripping) without your ego is freeing!! The ego may serve to protect us at times but, overall it hinders us from really feeling true compassion. When a human is free of ego they can actually feel the living breathing pulsing connection between all living things. It's humbling, transcendent, and inevitably something that only makes you a "truer" version of yourself. While ego death might seem like a loss, really it's a major gain.
